The Scottish Cup was a problem once again for Rangers and their path to the 1992 Final was far from easy. However, it was to provide the perfect conditions for Smith's first side to come of age. John and Andy are with Martyn to reassess a very special Double.

Brilliant, still hard to believe that is Ally's only SC winners medal as a player

Gordon Mac

That night at Hampden we were in the Rangers end still getting wet it was that bad, I've always said it's the longest 90 minutes of my life

Steve Clark

one game in the roi the night of the Aberdeen game and it wasn’t even a high profile game it was a mid table game that would have been lucky to have a crowd of more than a 1000.

Johnnie Mitchell

Wonderful times to have been lucky enough to see. I look back now and feel so privileged to have been Follow Following then. Thanks for another great show lads and trip down memory lane.

Alexander McKeever

Was in row J Rangers end and thought I would be dry as I was 10 rows from the front. How wrong was I! Great result though!

Alan Murdoch

Was in main stand that night we played Celtic. Because of the weird bends in the stand roof, the water was pishing down the roof valley, over the gutter and pouring over about half a dozen seats two rows in front of us like someone had opened a tap. We were soaked through to the skin.

Neil McSporran

How can I find dominant in the archives? Want to start at episode 1. Thanks

Callum Dinnen

This side, along with 88/89 is criminally under-rated. Be interesting to see how people rate the 9 sides over the piece.

Callum Dinnen

How much do you think the 101 goals is tactical, with Smith possibly letting the team off the least a bit more concern to Souness, and how much of it is down to declining standards in the Scottish game?

Martyn Ramsay

More the alchemy of the top two than a tactical plan I’d suggest. There’s definitely a decline really starting to hit home elsewhere though

Neil McSporran

Cheers. Hadn't realised I had to click on heart and hand logo first to get the full search options

What a brilliant night at Hampden that was. I was same age as Andy, 16, and in my first year as a ST holder. John mentioned the noise ramping up in the Gers end - I always remember a cracking rendition of Every Other Sat belting out as the last few minutes ticked away.

Dougie

Wonderful series. I remember being in the rain at Hampden North stand when Ally scored. Lost a lens from my glasses😂 When is the book volume 1 out?

Callum Dinnen

Does anyone have a link for the Aberdeen game at the end of the season? I've watched the season review on YouTube but that game isn't on it. Also, what's with the season review not acknowledging the Scottish Cup?

Martyn Ramsay

Aberdeen game wasn’t shown but the club recorded it for training purposes and gave McCoist the tape. Here are the goals

Martyn Ramsay

Not sure if the club planned on selling a separate SC video or there were rights issue with the SFA. It pissed me off at the time!

Callum Dinnen

I wonder if it was a rights issue as off the top of my head I don't recall any Scottish Cup goals in the 1988/89 review either. I'm sure McCoist also scored an outrageous goal in the 4-1 win against Falkirk - I can remember my dad raving about it but that didn't make the review either.

john cowden

Pretty certain it was rights issues. Rangers and SFA at loggerheads who would have thought …. Didn’t stop the sfa bringing out a Scottish cup semi final video .

Callum Dinnen

BTW @Martyn Ramsay is there a link missing in your post about McCoist's Pittodrie goals?

Martyn Ramsay

It disappeared for some reason. Just search ‘McCoist Aberdeen 0 Rangers 2 1992’ and you’ll be golden

Ben

Great show as ever. Are you putting out the Sunday Zoom as a pod too for those who can’t tune in live?

Gary Brown

Thanks again Martyn, John & Andy. Another great episode with wonderful reflections on the events 👍🙂

I really enjoyed this season at the time, and this recent recap. I think it was one of the most balanced Rangers sides you’ll find - no dominant superstars in the later forms of Laudrup or Gascoigne, periods of really good form seemed to be rotated around the team - against a backdrop of really consistent seasons from Stevens, Robertson, Gough, Spackman, McCall and Miko. Add in the turnaround from Goram and the partnership that blossomed between Hateley & McCoist and it really made for some great football. Lots of players weighed in with goals and it was a team with licence to properly go for it. Good reminder of the rise of, “Celtic play the best football” mantra, and the desperation that this statement was somehow worth anything of consequence. We had a side that was a adaptable, scored goals, spread the goals around and didn’t concede many. Yet the side in 3rd place, scoring fewer goals & conceding more was supposed to be some kind of benchmark of all that was good 🤪 That night at Hampden - one of my favourite memories of watching Rangers. Watching it back, an awful game of football but it was all that emotional blood & snorters stuff that gets elevated into folklore.
