Shane and David are back for the fifth installment of the Watergate at 50 series, as the wheels begin to come off the presidency of Richard Nixon while a bowtie-cladded Harvard lawyer drills closer to the Oval Office before being spectacularly dispatched.

This week, we meet the Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox, a man Nixon couldn't have conjured up in his worst nightmares to steer the investigation into his administration's dirty tricks. Plus, the tapes take center stage and we have a bunch of them for you; Nixon fights the courts every step of the way to protect those recordings; and ultimately hatches the Saturday Night Massacre, setting the stage for the final act of his time in office.

Cleaning the windows tomorrow. Perfect listening to get me through that shit job.

Shane said Reagan never had any presidential scandals? Iran / Contra should have seen him impeached but genial, uncle Ron got away with it - despite admitting he'd lied but he claimed still believed what he'd said was true, in his mind ( fuzzy as it was by then) though everyone else and the FACTS showed he had lied.

Shane

I was thinking about doing an I-C episode at some point, tbh. But certainly after we're all done with this. Also, the entire existence of Reagan the politician is a fucking scandal.

Bob MacCallum

Could you and David do a series on Reagan? That would be a laugh. Ta for this series anyway.

David adams

Another fantastic and deeply interesting episode guys , who’s next on your presidential hit list ?

Dougie

Kennedy assassination 12 parter next😏

John F

Another great show chaps If only we had some people in the press, legal system and government with the same morals and ethics that were evident during this time.

John F

I meant now btw!!! 😂

Shane

Not sure I could turn "Oswald shot him" into 15 hours of shows, tbf

RM

May have been answered before, however, what would you say is the best book on Watergate?

Calum Robertson

Great to get this "in depth" analysis and timeline of events. The characters are fantastic, almost literally, while your explanations and descriptions are superb. The phrase "Truth is stranger than fiction" springs to mind. Apart from "All the Presidents Men", which is necessarily entertaining and focused, are there any documentaries that you would recommend? This surely has the potential for a Netflix super-series

Shane

I don't know if David has finished it yet (I haven't) but we both recently started Garrett Graff's new one and it's fantastic. Rick Perlstein's Nixonland and The Invisible Bridge are both excellent, as well. Barry Sussman's The Great Coverup is the must-read from the perspective of someone who was there covering the story in real time.

RM

Thanks both, I'll have a look at the documentary first then have a look at the books

Alex Bryce

Terrific series. Fascinating listening every time.
