Heart and Hands resident therapists Andy and Ross are back to work through another session of catharsis. This week they are joined by John Walker from down under to discuss a painful European exit in 1997. The lads discuss the defeat to Gothenburg that year, the importance that European football has to Rangers and the painful night itself.

If you have a game that still wrankles with you to this day and would like to come on the show please just drop a comment.

This was an absolutely disgraceful performance. The worst of all in that run of abject failure. Was furious that night.

Tom McDavid

The overwhelming spectre of 9 then 10 in a row was massive. There was a lot of grumbling & disquiet every year at the early European exits. However, by say December the domestic targets became everything and Europe was largely “forgotten”

Well done on a great pod. That was an horrendous performance and, along with the Gothenburg horror show, set the tone for a dismal season. To think we spent the same/more on players in nominal terms then as we do a quarter of a century later. Back then the club was so shoddy and amateurish- training facilities, sports science, medicine, analysis, scouting, youth development - either woeful or non-existent. A couple of day after this game the Daily Record proclaimed that Walter was leaving. It claimed that at half time Smith said to the players did they want him to go. He confirmed this at the AGM a few weeks later but having a manager working a notice period of 2/3 of a season was not a good arrangement. You mention how our 2 talismanic players failed to show that season. Gascoigne was a mess. I don’t understand how this myth that selling him cost us 10 in a row has gained such traction. Laudrup’s situation brought home the new world of post-Bosman football - if a player’s mind is elsewhere then let him go. To be fair Murray was applauded initially when he persuaded Laudrup to stay. There was definitely an end of era feel about that time - I remember being really down in the dumps after the high of the summer.

Good pod guys, thanks. Brave boys taking this one on, well two really! Gothenberg & Strasbourg are real low points in all the Euro debacles. You can grudgingly accept a doing off the likes of Juve in group games but this stuff was just rank, especially after we had spent so big. I'm off for another watch og the USG home game, cheer myself up a bit 😉😆 Thanks again lads.

Angus Mackay

This show was class lads well done .

I drove up from England for this match, clearly having not learned my lesson following driving up for the Gothenburg match, too 😳

Andy Barnett

Very true Tom. But the dissent did grow as the years went by. I think the back to back defeats also were something different and an indication of how far off it we were.

Andy Barnett

Superb points David. It was a serious kick in the teeth for us that season, and I’m not sure we really recovered.

Tom McDavid

Yeah, the double dunt was a bit of a watershed and a sign of things to come that season.

Yes we're both gluttens for punishment but never regret being there to give the gers our support. You have to take the good with the bad.
