Three league wins out of twelve, out of Europe at the first hurdle but a brilliant League Cup win in between. The autumn of 1993 saw one of the most chaotic chapters in Rangers history and one that is somewhat under-appreciated today. Martyn, David and Alan try to explain the mayhem.

Still remember listening to the Levski away game on the radio while playing F1 Grand Prix as clear as day. The World lost a Kempston joystick shortly after Todorov's shot. The chat about Arsenal playing to the corners rang true with me. Alan mentioned the "1-0 to the Arsenal" stuff (which I associated with George Grahams style of play being boring) but I think it was just after that with Wenger turning up in 1996 that the killing the game late on stuff really came in to play. Vividly remember by Dad being disgusted at three of them in the corner running down the clock as they saw out a single goal lead. How dare they! Remember Craig Ferguson's show too. Sure it was called The Ferguson Theory. It had The Ace of Spades as its intro music. He also did a joke about "Rowntree's introducing the Orange Smartie...but the BBC have claimed Chic Young is contracted to them" Boom boom!

Is the orange and navy strip our best ever away kit?

That Levski goal was devastating. I remember listening to it in my parent's bedroom (they had an alarm clock/radio on my dad's bedside table) and just buried my head in their pillow in tears. It was such an enormous comedown from a glorious 18 months.

On Maxwell, was there maybe not a clue that the game he is most remembered for is a game where he concedes 3 goals?

Ross Matheson

He got away with it as he had a broken rib. Like Martyn said last week, he was seen as a bit of a hero in Scottish football due to that. I certainly remember him more for our SCF in 1994 than the Motherwell v Utd one

David Mason

Just a daft wee point Martyn but my recollection of the coin toss incident was that Walter was the one who said ‘that was just to see who did the toss’. He was no doubt right but I always thought it was quite canny how quickly he objected to make sure we had another chance to get the semi played at Ibrox.

Just thinking about this season gives me the fear. The goal we conceded in the league cup final was a sign of things to come in our other final that season.

Lee Colvin

I also think Durrants goal in that final is underrated due to supers winner.

Martyn Ramsay

I recall that too and some players note it in their autobiography but I can’t find the footage to check. It was a typical Scottish football shambles but it worked out alright!

Martyn Ramsay

Agree. Two give-and-go’s and then Durrant does so well to control it before lifting it up and over

Martin Boyd

Will not tell what i was doing just before the Levski winner but it was the fastest a man has gone limp ever. Didn’t go to as many games that season, but the games I did go to didn’t make me think I was missing much. Awful stuff for the most part with the real excitement extinguished by that swing of Toderov’s boot in more ways than one 🤣

Alan Bradley

Agree Lee, what jumps out strongly during this series, even after his horrendous injury, the wee man repeatedly showed what a magnificent player he was. Especially in so many vital domestic and European games. I know there’s an “if only” but regardless he still delivered the goods and in my eyes is one of best players throughout the dominant era.

Lee Colvin

Tbf it wasn't all bad news, around this period we brought out Rangers Gold which was a classic video.

Lee Colvin

Totally agree Alan,he was still playing for us for another four seasons and always got wheeled out for the big games.

Todorov’s goal is my worst ever moment as a Rangers fan. IIRC Trevor Steven lost possession at Levski’s corner flag and a few seconds later it was at Todorov’s feet. As David said, the real damage was done at Ibrox. I remember the very flat atmosphere, later KO time and many empty seats. The 2 goals we conceded were criminal.

As ever a wonderful trip down memory lane, even if this lane had a few too many thorny brambles cluttering the route!! Thank you as ever Martyn, David & Alan. McCann & CFC - gotta hand it to the wee bunnet, he did some job on and off the park. He's the architect & implimenter of the mhedia we endure today, the systematic schmoozing & 'placing' of certain types in positions of influence to provide their +ve PR (and our -ve) stems from his tenure. As for close to (fore)closure, IIRC the primary creditor was Bank of Scotland - given debt to turnover ratios they should have pulled the trigger but bottled it out of fear of losing so many personal & other commercial banking customers' business in the backlash from their support. This is in direct contrast to HMRC's effectively paltry debt compared to the business turnover & earning capability in '12 eg Their 94 situation, is like you owing more than you could repay if you sold house, car, everything. You get off without paying, as who you owe money too doesn't want to make enemies of your friends. Our '12 situation is like you getting a £100 speeding ticket but there are lies made up you ran over babies & old ladies while you were speeding! That debt is why Pacific Shelf FC quietly came into being!! The RFC '12 situation was a 'testcase' of a long standing HMRC 'project' trying to hit football clubs with huge tax bills for tax 'avoidance' (which is VERY different from 'evasion') via EBTs, etc. Schemes although legal (frankly) pissed them off and they wanted to chance their arm and challenge these publicly! Basically throw mud, see if it would / could stick. The RFC case was a prime testcase for 3 reasons; #1 RFC are big enough to make big news. If HMRC 'won' their EBT case...or their preferred standard operating procedure, pick a number, double it and say "You owe us this much" (then whisper, "how much will pay to make us go away?")....so IF they 'won' (ie club/business concede and pay to avoid a costly, lengthy court case & bad PR) a precedent is set and they can move to bigger & richer pastures, ie the EPL - that was their masterplan! (Lose but can save face down south, only Scotland, different legal system, can try again with smaller English club, etc) #2 they had very willing, certain 'minded' person/s running that particular project in this particular part of the world #3 Craig Whyte's history of liquidating / administration of his owned companies and leaving massive debts with HMRC, enabled the rhabids at #2 to convince English overlords that trying to kill a £100 million business for £7mil actual recoverable debt was viable - because as the maelstrom ensued they could then claim the £xx million EBT case was a win, 'on paper', and that would still set the precedent they wanted to use in the vastly richer EPL. Sorry for this digression, and that its a week late in the pod comments, its when I've got round to hearing the episode and the them in 94/McCann thing set me off! Most likely no one will ever read it anyway - if you do, I'm not mad, a moonhowler, conspiracy theorist, or even bevvied.
