Craig

Not going to be able to listen any time soon, is Lawrence injured?

Colin

Yeah. Out until the international break at the end of the month.

James

I don’t think people “lost the plot”. I think most just thought we’d get one decent player in thanks to CL money. If we hadn’t qualified does that mean we would have had to sell someone? Of course not, we budgeted for the EL surely.

Andrew

Any one else sick to the back teeth of us signing players who cant bloody play more than 4 games in a row

Alex Downie

We cry out for youngsters to get a chance, then buy players who we deem not good enough. Or get excited over players most of us haven’t seen then get upset if they don’t sign. If we don’t buy anyone we then moan that we didn’t buy anyone. We need to show the youngsters a pathway to the first team. King Lowry McCann look good enough for the squad especially with the 5 sub rule. We also got Katic Kelly Simpson and Middleton off the wage bill. We added some quality which is important and hopefully they settle in soon.

Gregg

Agree with Andy re backing the kids - if we can’t play king for example with 3 centre halves injured he’ll never play. Hopefully McCann can be the fabled number 8

Martin Boyd

Always enjoy Andy’s take on our finances , like a hot chocolate and a nice open fire , relaxing and comforting.

Tom

Come on Andy, it's the knock out round we're going to get past PSG.😜

Paul

The bigger question is for the football department, why weren't the issues addressed that have plagued us for years solved? Was that a Gio decision? No guarantee Sands and Tillman will actually want to stay. They do well, they'll have other options

Michael Thomson

Sorry lads, but this has really annoyed me today. For a couple of years Andy has said Champions League money would be “rocket fuel” for us in taking the club to the next level. Now suddenly that’s not the case? The line “maybe we’re keeping money for Tillman and Sands” is being parroted by fan media so often since yesterday that it’s pretty obvious it’s coming someone at the club. That and the horrendous hatchet job on Alfie last week is leaving a really bad taste in my mouth. I’m a big fan of the network and the shows all you guys produce, but something feels off this season.

Doug Young

Would love to see McCann, King, Lowry be involved regularly rather than a mid-level player from elsewhere. They have all looked more than ready.

Gordon Millar

I have a load of respect for Andy, a sensible perspective on our current position.....the question I have is, at what point, if ever, will we be in a position to make signings that will seriously improve the 1st team.....I take your well made points but I am with Colin......a signing that helps us win the league this year, is a sensible investment ( no guarantees, I understand that point)? The other question for me is 'at what point do we sit down with some players and talk about paying them off? Not easy I know but if any were willing to go to continue their careers it could help reduce the squad size and wage bill?

Doug

If you'd seen more of the chat on twitter, some people definitely lost the plot. I was actually embarrassed by some of the comments being made they were so over the top.

Doug

I think it's difficult to say any position has "plagued" us given we've won a title, domestic trophy, got to a Europa League Final & back in the Champions League within the past three years. Are there positions we can strengthen? Absolutely, but we've decent players (with cover) in almost every position. I know RW has concerned people for a while, but I think Matondo has been bought with that in mind and in my opinion we've seen a lot of improvement from Wright over the past 6 months. I do think a creative midfielder would have been a benefit, but overall I think it was a good window.

Doug

I think what we need to keep in mind is that “rocket fuel for us in taking the club to the next level" means more than just what is on the football pitch. Going to the next level includes making the club fully sustainable and building on the foundation we've created. It means improving the stadium facilities, it means finishing New Edmiston House and running a successful fan venue and museum, it means improving training facilities, the website, the ticket site etc etc. Keeping money aside for Sands & Tillman isn't a line, it's just a fact. We can't guarantee anything next season so making prudent decisions now while we're cash rich just makes sense. They are going to cost around £10m if we chose to convert their loans. If not then we'll have money aside either to bring in someone else, or to put towards keeping some of the other players who'll be out on contract at the time.

Heart and Hand

I’m sorry to disagree but I must and this is as someone coming from the same position as you on transfers. The ‘line’ about Tillman isn’t a line, it’s a legitimate reason and when looking for reasons it’s vid. You seem to be taking any disagreement with your position personally, thus nobody can simply disagree with you they must have an ulterior motive for doing so. It’s really unfair and an insult to any podder that you believe they’re not giving you their honest opinion but are instead part of some club conspiracy (even though I’d estimate about 80% of us agree with your position on transfers). People simply disagree with you. If that ‘annoys’ you I’m sorry but it’s really offside to question good, honest people’s integrity simply because you can’t handle disagreement.

Andy McGowan

It is rocket fuel! It will probably allow us to maintain an inflated wagebill for another year or two if we choose to. I understand the notion that it doesn't seem to change the status quo by much, but my point is that the status quo is something we should appreciate. And if you're insinuating we're parroting off lines fed to us from the board you couldn't be more wrong. It's a measured assessment of what I can see and sense. If I thought this board were fluffing the support I would say so believe me

Andy McGowan

You don't think we have players that have improved the squad? Bear in mind we can't go and buy the finished article they are now out of our reach forever. We need to find value whether that is youthful promise (Tillman Yilmaz) or experienced value (Lawrence Colak)

Doug

"At what point, if ever, will we be in a position to make signings that will seriously improve the 1st team" Do you not think that players like Colak, Tillman and Lawrence improve the first team? All three have come in, become immediate starters and played really well. I consider them significant improvements as things stand. Yilmaz I think is an excellent prospect to do the same, and even if he isn't playing I think he keeps a fire under Borna to perform. Matondo, Davies and Soutter are the three who the jury is still out on. I'm reasonably confident in Matondo though. I think Wright has improved a lot in the past 6 months as well. Soutter is proven domestically so it'll be down to his fitness as to if he works I think.

Stephen

Dont think it is at the stage where we are paying people off! Doing that doesn’t means there is more money available. There are not many in the squad that are completely worthless. Personally, I would have sold Roofe, Hagi and Helander if they were not injured. probably wouldn’t have re-signed McGregor either.

Spoon

Agree with Andy, the biggest question that I would ask is what did the manager want? Maybe he was happy with what he had and nothing he wanted became available ?

Mike Black

I completely agree with Andy's views. Particularly with McCann who I feel should now be part of the first team group.

Andrew McIntyre

I agree with Andy’s outlook but if we are to be self sustaining the recruitment has gotto be better. We should have traded Morelos or Kent in the summer of 21 when thet were at peak value post 55 rather than being in situation now where two are in final years of their deals. We’ve also got to be more savvy about avoiding players that are so injury prone. Can’t forecast every injury but the alarm bells with Helander and Roofe were there to see before we signed them.

Doug

I think we've the advantage that half the players they've bought this window are players that were already there (Carter-Vickers, Jota & Maeda), so no surprises on that front. We've new players who can pose them new questions, especially with Tillman & Colak who I think will occupy some of the energy they'd have dumped into keeping Kent quiet. I agree with Colin that it'll probably be close. The trick with them has been to weather the early storm, then get into the game and hit them on the counter. I've confidence we can do that with our improved attacking players. I'm going to go for an optimistic 2-1. Mon the Gers!

Allan Waltham

Pretty low audio from Andy. A bit frustrating. Anyway, battle fever is on.

William Mcdonald

Breath of fresh air Andy. Perfect explanation of why you should not listen to keyboard warriors on twitter

Doug

"No guarantee Sands and Tillman will actually want to stay." I forgot to add as well, when we brought the two in on loan they will have been aware of our options to purchase. I don't think they make the move if they aren't open to the possibility of staying. Of course that doesn't rule out them not enjoying their time here but I think both are looking settled and enjoying their football. They now have UCL participation to look forward to and if their performances with us lead them to get into the USA squad for the World Cup, then I can't see them having anything but a positive outlook on their time here. It's not guarantee, but I think it's more than positive all staying the same.

Graham johnston

I'm no expert on finance but I do know that I trust this board. If they haven't spent then the right deal wasn't ready. Unfortunately we're facing a very good Celtic team at the moment and in normal circumstances we'd have won the league easily last year and had a very strong squad for the season ahead. They're good form is worrying but we can't just go and buy two or three players just because they're winning lots. I'd more worried about the Kent and Morelos contract situation. If we an use that extra income to tie them up to new contracts then I'd be happy with that. I thought Goldson was off and if we keep the other two on top of what we have signed already then I'll be happy with this transfer window.

Doug

I agree with you Andy, so that's one at least! 😅

Doug

I think King is in a positive position given our concerns surrounding a lot of our back up CBs. I'd certainly like to see him play at least 5-10 games this year across competitions. I think Lowry and McCann have stiffer competition, but assuming he gets back quickly, I'm sure we'll see at least Lowry appear a few times off the bench (and hopefully some starts against the bottom half teams).

Gordon Millar

Apologies gents, should have qualified my position to say that some of this years acquisitions have improved the squad on that we agree.....I'm specifically looking at a midfield that needs to replace an ageing Steven Davis/Scott Arfield both great servants to the club, but I don't see us replacing this quality without a big fee by our standards( accept that a youth prospect could step up, but these are big shoes to fill).....agree we are top heavy squad wise but why not this year, rather than next year?

William Alston

Andy is spot on as usual and everything makes sense although the issue is the soundbites that we get from Wilson and Robertson every now and again don't help, things like everything we bring in goes to the first team etc. I get that they are probably meaning wages and transfer fees although they should understand that when they say things like that they raise our expectations and set us up for the disappointment. If they were a bit more measured with the information they put out then it might not be as mental as it was yesterday. Maybe it's just me but that's the perception I have on it

Robert Todd

Great analysis from Andy 👍🇬🇧

Doug

If we don't keep McGregor, I think we'd need to bring in someone, which would be money spent where we didn't have to. I think it was sensible to keep him about while we assess if McLaughlin is to be the long term successor and address GK next season (where we either bring in a strong back up, or buy a new No 1). I agree Helander is one we need to look at moving on, though I'm of the opinion Roofe is worth keeping unless we find a really solid replacement. Technically he's an good player and even with his injuries his goal scoring record is excellent, so as a third choice (which he now firmly is) I think he's fine alongside our youth options. I understand why people want to just cut and run though. Hagi is an odd choice for me though. Season 20/21 he scored 8 goals and had 15 assists, which is a significant contribution to the team. Until his knee surgery he'd had no significant injuries either. With any luck he'll come back strong and I think will play a key part in the second half of the season.

Stephen

Not sure what the hatchet job was on Alfie. He got himself sent off, wasn’t fit and got left out of a big game which we won. He then knuckled down and got fit again to the point where he wasn’t sold and is back in squad. Can’t see who is losing from that situation now..

Doug

I assume you mean Morelos and Kent? They are both key players to our attack so I think we could only let them go if the right offer came in. With Alfie, the main big offer we got for him was before our sales of Patterson, Aribo & Bassey, so I feel like the club used him as a marker. They refused to accept anything but their valuation to signal to the footballing world that we'd no longer be a soft touch in that regard. It may mean we lose value on him in the end, but ultimately in the long run I think setting that marker contributes to our long term strategy. Gaining the UCL place this year will help with their contract negotiations I'm sure and I'd expect us to keep at least one of them. I agree that Helander and Roofe came in with chequered injury histories. I think we've been particularly unlucky with Helander as bar one season, prior to signing with us although he'd had a number of injuries, he hadn't missed a huge amount of actual games (an average of 7.5 per season, skewed significantly by 16/17 season where he missed 15 of the 30 games he'd missed in the four seasons prior). I agree that his time is at an end. With Roofe though, despite us having taken a huge gamble with him (he'd both significant time out and missed a lot of games) I think overall he's still been a good signing as despite his injuries his goal scoring record has been excellent. I do think we've moved on now and will be able to be more careful when it comes to these things in the future. That said, due to our place in the footballing world I think we need to recognise that sometimes to get players of extra quality, we'll have to compromise elsewhere. Injury records are one of those compromises we may need to gamble on from time to time. I've no doubt both Helander and Roofe would be playing at decent levels on much higher money if they were fully fit. They aren't though, hence why they were available to us.

Doug

I read a rumour that the Raskin deal was in place should Kamara have left and he would have cost £5m. I think it fits in with the financial prudence model Andy is suggesting. We may have been operating a one in one out policy given the numerous midfield options we have. Also if Karama went for the reported £10m, that would have been a net £5m profit, so a win in all respects. From the perspective of the ones who were pushing that we should have signed Raskin regardless to improve the team. His current contract expire in June 2023, meaning we'll be able to potentially sign him on a pre-contract in January. Why spend £5m on a player we can sign for free in 5 months time, when the players we have currently have demonstrated the required quality already? That would simply be poor financial management in the long run. Some might suggest that the UCL necessitates an increase on that level of quality, and that would be a fair suggestion. However, for our realistic aims, which will usually be to come third unless we get a favourable group, I think a team who can reach the latter stages/final of the Europa League is a similar level of quality to one looking to get third in a UCL group (which of course drops into said latter stages of the UEL). I'm hopeful that the club have already discussed with him the possibility of singing in January. If we're able to do that, we potentially have the option to then go back to Standard Liège and suggest they may as well sell him to us now for cheaper so they make something of the deal, as we've done before.

David Kiltie

Colin, Andy, well done on a super podcast. In terms of the comings and goings, we have only lost 2 players who have left a hole - Bassey and Aribo. In Colak, Lawrence and Tillman we can be confident of 3 quality signings. Also Sands from the prior transfer window is now impressing. I had expected more major outgoings - one or more of Kent, Morelos or Kamara- which would have perhaps funded another major signing but this has not happened.

Gordon Millar

It took the pressure off Willie Collum's shocking refereeing performance by pushing this story into the background.....was their a need let Alfie know that his attitude is wrong absolutely, did it have to be done in public, not so sure......IMO the story that week should have been the need for professional referees, but this overtook that message.

Andy McGowan

But everything that comes in is underpinning a wagebill that is being kept too high so we benefit, so it is true. Not everything is transfer fees

Graeme Brown

Not trying to blow smoke up anyone’s posterior, but I always enjoy (rely on!) Andy’s take on our finances. Being sensible isn’t particularly sexy or exciting, but it’s our reality. I was as disappointed as anyone that we didn’t make a signing yesterday, but I can just about accept the logic behind it. One quick thing is that I was really disappointed to see Rangers fans turn on fan media yesterday, presumably out of frustration at the lack of signings. I daresay that’s sometimes the cost of being “visible” and “contactable”. Still, I’m sorry that it happened. I hope no one lost any sleep over it, and that the H&H squad realise that the majority of us appreciate the good work you all do.

Heart and Hand

Thank you Graeme. It’s sore when it happens but you just have to try to remember it’s usually just trolls. I mean, fans disagree often with each other so that’s no problem but the nasty personal stuff is generally from people who aren’t usually the nicest anyway.

William Alston

Definitely, it's just how we communicate things like this is the problem. We need to manage expectations better instead of saying nothing and creating a vacuum

Jim Milne

Love the longer update today with Andy's information regarding the business side. You guys bring more professionalism to "journalism". Like others have said yesterday was embarrassing some of the social media comments. The world is a stressful place for many these days and unfortunately lashing out on twitter is too easy. The way H&H and other Fan Media at Ibrox approach the task with the dilegence, intelligence, professionalism and respect. The same standards we demand of our players, coaching staff and all Rangers employees. Keep up the great work fellas.

G Calder

Andy - I've never agreed with anyone more about our club than with what you are saying . You are 100% correct .. Your FACTS are so important to get out there ... Thanks . I really hope people listen . Its SO frustrating hearing fellow fans wanting to spend - without knowing if we can afford it ! Our goal is self being sustaining - more so now than ever . There is a financial crisis on its way ... The club needs to prepare for that.. We have not made a profit for decades - it's important we get into the black . Winter is coming ...

Steven Murray

So you will be happy not winning the league again this year, having a decent run in Europe and maybe winning a cup?

Gary Brown

Thanks for the update Colin and particularly Andy's input - which is entirely valid, considered and based on fact. Lotta people greeting 'Club didnt try......' no one bar those inside the club recruitment team know that! Many many reasons why the club's player targets were not available, or did not want to leave their current club, etc ps Don't forget - We have made signings this transfer window, 7 of them!

David McNeilly

Enjoyed that one today. Very good points made.

M Milne

Dear Colin, On a lighter note what was the tune for Friday’s update? Yours sincerely, Mac
