Champions League football makes its long-anticipated return to Ibrox as a high-flying Napoli side fresh of the destruction of Liverpool in MD1 are our opponents.

Realistically, Rangers will need to take something from this game to have any aspirations of European football post-Christmas.

Alex, Steven and Kevin provide the Preview.

Quick comment on the celtic/ ajax games , if Tav is carrying an injury that then surely affects the job that Matondo Wright Tillman has to do or have the confidence in Tavs ability to do his normal job

David Kiltie

Well done on a great podcast, guys. Strider, are you sure you didn’t select only 10 players? Two interesting points - had we signed eg Davies and Tilmaz 5 minutes before the transfer deadline we would all have got a lift from that yet in practical terms we would be in a worse position inasmuch as neither would have any training sessions or minutes in games under their belt. Steven mentioned that we were outrun by Ajax to the tune of 6km, a fact much highlighted on social media. I checked the stats v PSV - we ran over 109k in both legs. Fitness levels can’t collapse in the space of a fortnight. Maybe it was more psychological than physical. Defeat in Amsterdam had echoes of the 1990s. I hope our Italian visitors don’t give us a further 90s flashback on Wednesday night 😩

Alex 100% spot on in this pod, patience required and less knee jerk to the travails of football. When are we ever going to learn to stop judging guys on their first dozen games. Great pod as always don’t agree much these days with Kev or Stevie but I do enjoy hearing their opinions.

Jamie Gourlay

Stevie you are correct about Gios energy post PSV v now. Something has happened. Gio has brought in close to 100m and hasn't been backed. It may be down to FFP and other reasons but Gios stance has changed from being on a high to dropping hints about competing. He also made a comment along the lines of "everyone thinks the club has alot of money but we don't". Strider you make some good points at times but in other moments you defend situations which are well off.

Douglas Innes

If the energy levels aren't what they should be and its apparent there is still a lack of sharpness to our play I honestly think the players have chucked it for this management team

Rod

It's gotten to a ridiculous level now, getting a bit sick of everyone being deemed shite after 5 minutes.

Darren Todd

I am not a Scott Wright hater by any means but the money in the bank he seems to have this season gained through the Ross County performance is completely false. He was terrible in that game except 2 or 3 short bursts on the ball. Off the ball he doesn’t move well, makes wrong decisions and narrows Tav’s space consistently.

Brian Johnstone

Do the players think that making it to the CH/League is the achievement done, rather than the start of a new opportunity?

Pedro

Steven spot on in how the performance has been below par all season. Despite defeating Ross County at Ibrox. That victory is doing some real heavy lifting in this pod... Quite wild if Alex thinks the manager get the team line up fine in two 4-0 slaughterings. Napoli are a top team as are all our CL opponents. We really will be doing well to get anything in the group, which isn't a criticism of us tbh, this is the highest level in a formidable group. Predictions of finishing second or beating Ajax always seemed like fantasy. Add in we are in terrible form and low on confidence then hard to see how to be thinking we are going to get anything. What a result it would be though.

Bob Keith

Mentioned this before but Kevs microphone makes this very hard to listen to.

Kev Armstrong

Thanks for flagging. How are you listening to the pods? Is it through headphones or in car etc?

Bob Keith

Phone, earphones, the car the lot. Depending on the speaker it'll either sound like bubbles, or crackling. You'll hear it between 16-17 minutes on this show.

Alex makes a critical point in this pod. Celtic have obviously signed players for the here and now that can go straight into their team and have an impact, but we've signed players (certainly in the case of Matondo, Tillman and Yilmaz) that require more development but also have a much higher potential ceiling. That being the case, we need to be patient and accept that there's a substantial dip when the players that have developed move on. Lawrence getting injured has been a real hindrance, because he was obviously designed to be an instant impact signing, I agree with the assessment that we're short a quality number eight, but they tend to be hideously expensive and hard to come by. Long term we can hopefully develop our own - the young lad Taylor that played for Ajax last week shows that while our academy has made progress it still has a way to go to mach the best. I think this is a season of transition in which we begin to seriously develop from the original group that served us well. With the flanks hopefully shored up I think midfield will be tackled next summer along with the goalie situation. In the short term I would play either King (who looks commendably unfazed by the shirt) or Davies alongside Goldson so that Sands can provide legs in the middle. Lundstram was totally overrun last week, and Zambo Anguissa is a monster. Thanks as always for the show, guys, always an engaging listen.

Big away games so far this season - USG, PSV, Celtic, Ajax (to an extent Hibs) - The PSV away game is the aberration rather than the Celtic game. This is only ending one way, it’s just when we pull the trigger

Craig

I think that Ajax wage comparison got shot down and in reality it's £2 to every £1 we spend.

chris smith

We dont have a squad of 29 realistic players to choose from. Yes we are paying for them but realistic starters are half that number as Gio’s choices this season have shown. Sick notes, young boys and has beens fill half the squad.
