The Special Prosecutor is fitting out his allies for their prison attire. Impeachment is a certainty in the House. And even Republicans in the Senate have let him know that the outcome is a foregone conclusion. In Episode 8 of their Watergate at 50 series, Shane and David are back as the final days of the Nixon presidency draw to an inevitable finish.

There are still a couple of characters left to play their big part, namely Leon Jaworski and Alexander Haig. You've heard about them plenty of times in this series but find out how they came to be the two most influential figures in these closing acts. Plus, the Supreme Court makes it known that they're tired of all the grandstanding; Barry Goldwater tells the president his tired act no longer works on the GOP's base; and a tired Richard Nixon says goodbye to his staff and rides away from Washington.

Absolutely loving this series!

Shane

Thanks so much, Alex! We've loved making it. Now we've just got to figure out what story comes next.

Thanks again Shane & David for the latest episode of this wonderful series. Absolutely loving it too. I 'knew' about Watergate but only the pulp fiction, montage style version - and as I get older I find more & more often these montage style things (even hour long 'specials' solely on the subject) are poorly researched, badly produced and very inaccurately portray the situations. Revisionist history for the 30 second attention span viewer. This series is the complete opposite; so well (lovingly / obsessively?) researched & detailed you not only learn the 'what' but the 'how' and the 'why' so well produced each episode stands on its own as a piece you can enjoy, understand and aren't in the dark if you haven't heard the others so fabulously delivered you're enthralled and eager for the next part of the story. Superb work guys. It's been amazing to learn the full story and most importantly the 'human' emotion elements; pride, arrogance, duty, dedication, etc and how they, more than the actual facts, shaped and drove the whole situation in the directions taken. I'm not interested in US (or UK) politics at all. But this has been one of the most engaging, intriguing, most enjoyable shows I have heard or seen for many, many years. I'm obviously a H&H Patron and did buy a coffee (fund a raid on Meyer for Irn Bru😉) for you Shane. Small rewards but given with my heartfelt thanks .

Another fascinating and informed discussion. PS Nixon's deepest valley/highest mountain is Gers' The Hedge / Napoli tonight.

Gary Brown

👍 Spot on Bob. Although 🤔 it may be a tie between that hedge and Easter Rd for that Ramsdens Cup Final !!

I was hoping you'd discuss the good parts of Nixon's presidency. I'm ignorant to that given my age and lack of education. Given how you've described him getting there and what he got up to in the office then I'm miffed by that one. I'd leave a voicemail but I have a voice that shouldn't be heard!
