Cammy and Andy B provide a late update covering todays interview with John Bennett.

Comments

Gregg McKee

He’s a Rangers man and talks well but the interview was poor and didn’t cover half of the fans concerns in relation to what is happening and the clubs relationship with us. Pre agreed, club led questions will not cut it at this point. We didn’t learn a lot from this interview at all. The club comms strategy is abysmal.

Alistair Simpson

Sorry guys but totally disagree. The interview was alot of nonsense. Banging on about how the communication has been poor -"I'll own that, I'll own that", then proceed to spend a half an hour interview saying the square route of hee haw. He said the board should of came out and explained the champions league money in more detail, then gave no detail of it what so ever 🤦

Nathan

Plenty buzz words and plenty detail on the issues NOT causing concern.

Davie Balfour

Spoke more like a politician than a rangers board member

William Alston

Gents I have to disagree with you unfortunately, that was one of the most condescending interviews I have ever heard. Usual high bar best in class sound bites, heard it all before, his interview post 55 was very similar. He's saying that the squad is great because we won 55 2 seasons ago now and got to the Europa League final last year, that's fine although we played that final without a striker, that alone was a scandal. There are massive issues with our squad. Would also be nice to hear from the actual chairman of rangers and be asked some questions from people outside of RTV

Nikky Cairney

35 minutes of total nonsense in an interview. Surprised you are praising Bennett. Him and the board are way out of touch. Just a couple of examples. He’s said recruitment isn’t just about new players it’s about renewing existing players. Then mentioned davis Arfield and McGregor and how well they played in a 3-0 defeat against Napoli. Other favourite is him saying if someone offered him the last 2 1/2 years he’s have took it. So he’s saying he’s happy with 1 league and 1 cup. Euro final was incredible but 2 trophies in 6 isn’t enough in context of where Celtic were. All this is while the whole interview he says “best in class”. He also mentions about always improving when we can all see we aren’t. Found the whole thing embarrassing to be honest.

Sgems90

This interview was put in place to try and combat the unrest within the support re football matters and what we’re seeing being produced every Saturday which is turgid boring fitbaw. I think the majority of us want a Gio sacked interview 🤣

Gregg McKee

Bisgrove praised by Bennett and on the pod. Absolutely a success on the balance sheet (which appears to be all that matters to this board) but is the Oz fiasco, Castore / merchandising shambles & deals with dubious at best schemes like Sportemongo really “best in class” and are these associations that a club like Rangers should be entertaining?

Matthew Howie

Massive fan of your podcast but dunno how you’s can think that was a good interview. This squad is In Major need of upgrading and for him to say the squad is in a good place is pathetic

Craig Lamont

Thanks guys, love the Pods but couldn't have a more different take away from the interview. Felt it was a puff piece done in quite a condescending tone, there was no need for the Edminston House/assists comment for example. While the squad is stagnating and the building seems in limbo the distribution of funds is fair game for the support. As for fans being told off for the early judgment of players, maybe Mr Bennett would be better served having that conversation with his manager. No explanation of how the Champions League ticket price was devised. No explanation of the club travel situation, and no explanation of the criticisms of MyGers. Really felt like they knew they had to do at least something before the AGM. Somebody has to grasp the mantel of being the voice and figurehead of Rangers. Gerrard did it to an extent but we need a visible and vocal presence.

Ross McLaren

Could not disagree more with both of your takes on the interview. It answered nothing

Michael Gray

Comms strategy has been so poor. Question is why? Dave Graham simply not up to the job, or limited by parameters put in place by those above? Why there was no interview with likes of Robertson or Bennett after Champions League qualification in what it meant for the club is beyond me.

Jamiedinho

The interview was poor and i am amazed at H&Hs response to this, a puff piece that ignores what the board have told us previously in regards. The fact he thinks that keeping Arfield, Davis and McGregor was some sort of masterstroke because we got beat 3-0 by Napoli is laughable. The squad needed a big overhaul last season and we stayed still, it needed similar again this season and we are playing nearly identical teams to Gerrards first season in the CL, the boards incompentence has set us back several years when we should have strengthened after 55!

Cameron Bell

I’ll take the criticism if people feel I wasn’t harsh enough in terms of issues not addressed - but even reviewing what was being said took nearly 40 minutes, and there’s too many issues (as seen in comments above) that can a) all be covered, b) provide a answer to and c) may not be able to be discussed for whatever reason that I think would be satisfactorily dealt with in that IV. If that hasn’t been addressed properly in todays pod I’ll take that onboard, my apologies to anyone dissatisfied.

Gregg McKee

Don’t apologise for your instant opinion Cammy. There was parts that was an improvement in what we’ve heard recently but at the same time I personally feel we didn’t really learn anything today. Certainly not on the stuff that I wanted to hear about (ticketing, MyGers, travel dabacles, merchandising etc)

Gregg

Felt the interview was a good start at improved communications. Would have liked more on the transfer window - did we go in for players post CL qualification, are we hamstrung by FFP etc. And more detail on the issues such as disabled viewing, ticketing system, safe standing. Hopefully this is the beginning.

Cameron Bell

Just to be clear, I’m only giving personal opinion and balance, I don’t speak on behalf of H&H and no prior discussion was held with David or the podders prior to the DU being recorded, hence my message below.

Gregg

I know David has said previously that the board don’t want to talk to fan media - do you think the interview today may open the door to this?

Glen Kane

We've been in reverse since 55. Supporters aren't stupid we can do basic sums. The income that's went into the club hasn't been reinvested in the team and the money that has been spent looks, once again, to be poorly spent. But never mind the woman's team won their league!

Craigieboy 1872

All I know is, that as a season ticket holder in GF5, why can't the club have someone simply renew the hand paper towels, they are available before the game, but not during or after. Surely this can be better serviced, for my near £600 a season, I know it's a small thing but detracts hugely from the customer experience.

David

Never apologies for giving an opinion, Cammy. That's why i listen. If I wanted contrived dribble I would listen to BBC radio Scotland. PS - if JB thinks Ross Wilson is doing a good job then God help us.

Martin Sutherland

Regression since 55 and it is only going to get worse next summer. We didn’t invest from a position of strength, we certainly won’t from whatever way we end this season. Tough times ahead.

Brian Rae

A massive own goal straight away by making it an RTV exclusive. I pay for RTV but this should've been available to all and it's obvious that they quickly realised this. As for the interview, I agree with most that it left a lot to be desired. Singling out individual players isn't what I expect our VC to be doing in an interview and If Matondo isn't already under pressure, he certainly will be now. For me, this highlights certain non-exec football board members hiding from their own shit show. John Bennett simply isn't qualified to give insight into some of the subjects he covered in that interview. (Football dept for one) It was merely his own opinion and that's really not what we need right now.

Robert Atkinson

Well said. Also mentioned how the fans “own” the club, yet they will not engage with (the albeit flawed) fan group that actually do own part of the club! PR is very poor, pressers are now so sterile as to be pointless.

Robert Atkinson

I didn’t find him condescending in the least, just thought there was very little insight provided to fans.

Andy Barnett

I agree that would be ideal Craig. But as you see with clubs everywhere, the Walters, Fergusons, Dalgleish type characters tend not to reside in football as much. It’s more about multiple voices and opinions. Whatever JB had said today, there would be dissent, simply as the team hasn’t performed to expectation.

Andy Barnett

As I said pretty much word for word - the issue was what he didn’t say, not what he did.

John stoddart

Condescending in his tone although I agree if three years ago we were offered 55 and a European final and a Scottish cup in the next three years and stopped their ten we would have all bitten their hand off no question. The matter of context is important Celtic were on their knees we should’ve put our foot on their throats we didn’t and lost our manager because of that and in turn let their struggling manager off the hook he was getting turned on until we lost Gerrard. That’s on the board and I’m sorry this nonsense of getting beaten 3-0 at home to a below par Napoli side we should’ve beaten imo is a “ Rangers performance “ get that in the bin. Not impressed with that interview and the fans the owners of the club he said have been grafted for money by this board with ridiculous pricing in the last two European group stages

Andy Barnett

The ‘best in class’ was also in reference to non first team related matters, having top of the line facilities, training, youth academy, professional womens team, corporate etc. in that regard the board has been a success.

Heart and Hand

My take FWIW - board didn’t get themselves into this overnight and aren’t going to get out of it with one interview. All this can be is a start but actions over the next few months - particularly in January window - will speak louder.

Moon Man

This has gone well

Craig Lamont

Thanks for replying Andy. Really enjoy listening to your takes. I think my understanding of a figurehead doesn't necessarily need to have a stature of the people you listed. Over the last few seasons there hasn't been a touchstone for Rangers fans. Sometimes its Robertson, sometimes it's Wilson, sometimes its Bennett and what's more worrying is they don't all seem to have the same cohesive vision for our future and progression and that's what is frustrating. To slightly contradict that, I do agree with you and Cammy that we are in safe hands, my main take away is the communication has been garbage and we need all the horses pulling in same direction.

Maca82

Mr Bennett 🤦‍♂️

Andy Barnett

JB is infallible and all-powerful. Every success, every achievement, every victory, every scientific discovery, all knowledge, all wisdom, all happiness, all virtue, are held to issue directly from his leadership and inspiration.

Andy Barnett

It’s a valid point Craig. The trouble as I see it is no 2 fans have exactly the same set of viewpoints - therefore the board will also likely be divided. But hopefully this is start of better times in the communication.

Martin Davies

Not the car crash it was made out to be by many on FF but offered very little insight or new information. He mentioned that we got the wrong end of the stick in terms of the CL money and other revenues, and was frustrated by the misinformation being spread in the vacuum - then proceeded to tell us nothing!! Used a lot of rousing buzzwords and phrases - best in class, a Rangers performance, raise the bar, etc - without substance. I do trust the main shareholders and investors though. And i believe we are in good hands. But I remain sceptical on the credentials of the executive board of Robertson, Wilson, Bisgrove, etc. Hopefully just the first in a long line of communications from the board - they need to front up. I also hope it's not as stage managed as this one. A lot of soft balls thrown there. We need them to answer fans questions in a live environment and not cherry picked questions with pre recorded and edited answers.

Greg

Can't believe what I just listened to, you can't seriously believe that giving loyal subscribers to RTV barely any time of exclusive access before punting the whole lot on YouTube was part of the plan ffs boys.

David Kelly

I have to agree with some (not a lot) of the things that were mentioned in the interview but to me, there were many more invidious comments that certainly does demonstrate being more than a tad out of touch. The fact he regards 2 trophies in 2 and a half years a success is certainly not “best in class” in my opinion. Baffling comment that he thought the vast majority of fans would be delighted with that. I’m not. Secondly, to the point about there always being unexpected outgoings but never unexpected incomings - does this mean that the board literally expected to reach the Europa league final and continue to do so going forward. Because I would regard reaching the Europa league final a hellova big unexpected income. May just be me but found that a perplexing comment. At least it’s a start though and, yes, he is very articulate and speaks well.

Liam Johnson

Flagship show being edited hard as we speak 😂 The fact they put it behind a paywall shows how far out of touch they really are. Mind boggling. Fair play lads coming on and covering it.

Steven L

It’s all about options. I feel it’s a puff piece.

Alan

I’ve only watched the first video just now, once I get over the patronising and condescending attitude that oozed out of him I’ll get round to watching the second video

Scott Hamilton

I dont think using 'best in class' as a line to justify progress in areas that realistically 99% of fans dont interact with holds any weight at all. The boards decision to use funds and focus in the areas mentioned while completely ignoring the lack of investment where most fans base their experience with the club - within the stadium, has been and continues to be a poor strategy. I'd rather we take care of facilities for our fans than impressing Tom Lawrence tbh

Graham Jones

This was difficult to dissect and make sense of. There was too much spin in the interview and very little fact. It’s not a case of supporters not trusting the investors with the club, because we do, but what we are questioning is their judgements in some aspects. You can trusty someone and still question the wisdom of their decisions. There are a lot of question marks over Wilson’s record at the club right now. He said we would continue to invest, but what panoply are concerned about is the lack of that same commitment to invest over the past eighteen months or so. We won the title and sat on our laurels when every club strengthens at that point to stay ahead. However, at no point is anyone questioning the commitment or intentions of the board, so they can knock that one on the head. The strongest squad remark is misleading. We heavily weakened two key positions in the summer and I’m yet to see where we’ve improved there. The improvement was in terms of those that make up the numbers from what I can see, because too few of the new player shave yet to make a dent on the team. However, we need to be fairy to the players, support them and if they don’t do it then someone needs to carry the can, and I don’t see how you can point all fingers at the manager. There were others making the decisions in the transfer business.

Tommy

Ha I laughed at this too. Club made a complete arse of it “We appreciate that fans think we only speak to them when we want money. We’ll tell you this isn’t the case, subscribe now to RTV to find out our plans” 😁 At least they quickly realised they made an arse of it

Tommy

You know I love you boys (and always will) but you’re a little out of step with the support on this one. I like Bennett, he’s probably the best figurehead we have at the club. But this was just an attempt at a ‘hold’ to try and let fans know that the board are listening. It’s fair enough but I suppose that proof is in what happens next. And we’ve had decades of boards and owners tell us one thing and do something else, so JB will understand we need to see something in practice. The support doesn’t buy these interviews, we’re all a bit savvy these days. This was a toe in the water in terms of transparency, we need something real and as you’ve said, if you treat us like adults then we’ll respect that.

Craig Robertson

They've actually made it worse with that interview. Forget FF and twitter, look at the comments on this review pod. They are almost all measured and free of hyperbole, and yet I'm struggling to find one out of 40 odd that agrees with the "balanced" take from Cammy and Andy, the most critical comments receiving the most likes.

Iain Henderson

I heard around 9 months back from someone who had no axe to grind and some inside knowledge on the IT front that Rangers had many thousands of un-opened emails from fans and not enough resources to catch up. That let to introducing a new 'case management' system that would at least allocate a ticket to each inbound enquiry and categorise them and count them. And then the new head of customer service would be able to resource up to deal with them. It would appear from the general lack of or poor responses we get to queries that this is not sorted yet. My point is a) being transparent and saying 'we don't have enough customer service people in place and here's how and when we plan to fix that would be better than the current silence on the subject, and 2) That's just basic business management - number of enquiries coming in x how many a person can resolve in a day tells you how many people they need. So much of what annoys us is down to poor communication, and poor responses to questions. Get some of that inbound transfer money spent on having the right number of staff would help resolve at least some of the current annoyances.

David McBurney

I felt that the videos were like a throwback to the Murray days where we just got patronising comments. I agree that we can't judge the signings after a few weeks but I think the bigger issue is that before the last window where we signed 7 players the 3 before it we've brought in 3 players that are still at the club. All this talk if continually raising the bar is bluster cos we aren't seeing it on the park

Stuart Porter

Thanks for your time gents but respectfully I thought it was 30 mins of side stepping and buzz words. Speaks like a politician and didn’t delve into any topic meaningfully apart from the disabled plans. What other plans did we get from that going forward? Best in class… alignment… lifting the bar?!??? What does that mean? How is he/ the board going to do it? They missed the trick in not communicating effectively yet they had the chance to do it and really told us very little. Bennett was sent out to placate and divert from King’s recent comments. Would love to hear David’s views on this.

James Lochhead

Was literally just going to say this I still think the main issues haven’t been addressed and oh we will detail plans in January at the agm etc

Craig Lamont

It was Murray on Afternoon Sportscene after a European defeat all over again. 😂😂😂
