Martyn is three quarters of the way through his epic series on the greatest ever Rangers era. As he and the team pause for breath, they need your questions on the story so far. Is there anything you want them to go into in more detail? Is there something you wanted covered that Martyn has overlooked? Fire the questions in the thread below before Monday evening's recording and your wish will be granted!

Thank you for all of the support so far.

In an alternate universe where we solely focus on signing the best Scottish talent after 92/93 to prioritise European success, who could we have signed? Also, do you think we’d have been more successful if we’d went after the likes of Strachan, Macallister, Collins, Hendry, or were Scottish players simply too far behind the modern European tactics we were now seeing…

Scott Dickson

Also, great series gents and whilst they may sometimes go unnoticed, the research Martyn puts into events such as Il Choco etc really help paint the picture for those of us not alive at the time.

Callum Dinnen

On paper, the 89/90 side might be the best Souness side of the lot (Woods, Stevens, Munro, Gough, Butcher, Steven, Wilkins/Spackman, Ferguson, Walters, McCoist and Johnston) in terms of personnel and balance. Why then, do you think that it's the worst of Souness' title winning sides in terms of points, goals and trophies won?

Louch

Having went through the run of years, what are the biggest sliding doors moments for you? For example If we had reacted to a bad run and changed manager using the modern day breaking points etc where would they have been Also, seeing how many “easy” games the greatest sides drew/ lost, has that changed your perspective at all on how things are now?

Stevie Batchelor

Love this series. It’s my go to listen when practicing my darts! This is probably controversial but remembering as a season ticket holder at the time, I thought for a period of 6/8 months Alec Cleland was our best performer bar Mr Laudrup. Or was the beer clouding my judgement? 😂

Callum Dinnen

If you could go back in time and spend a day in the head of David Murray or David Holmes and change one decision that was made (or wasn't made) at the time either on or off the field, what decision would you change and why? Likewise, if you could do the same with Souness and Smith, is there a transfer decision you would have done differently?

Callum Dinnen

Last question in this run of questions for now: as we've completely covered his era, what would your Souness XI be? (based entirely on their impact and performance between 1986 and 1991, so for players like Gough and Hateley you're only judging them on their Rangers careers up to the end of 1990/91.)

Callum Dinnen

Actually, I'll go for one more: in terms things that have been underappreciated, the failure to win the league in 87/88 is often looked on as a missed opportunity to win the Ten, when in actual fact is the bigger missed opportunity from that season the chance for a 2nd tilt at the European Cup in 1988/89, particularly given how good that 88/89 Rangers side was? Given the rapidly changing European landscape in the late 80s and early 90s, was only competing in the European Cup once in Souness' first 3 seasons a big missed opportunity given in hindsight that was the time where winning the big cup was most likely?

Graham Roy

If the change in rules for foreign players didn’t come into play does this help or hinder Rangers? In 1992 I think it helps us but after that not so sure. Also if Rangers had kept Johnston do we have a better chance of at least getting to champions league final?

Kev Armstrong

Throughout this series there has been many names thrown about as transfer targets. Which names would you have like to have seen at ibrox and which were a bullet dodged?

David Clapperton

I find the conversation fascinating between the guys that can go back a good bit longer and the guys of more my generation of 80s/90s. It never occurred to me that Richard Gough, for instance, wouldn’t be the natural go-to when speaking about “the captain” or that Derek Johnstone for many, will always be regarded as better than Mark Hateley. There’s an obvious recency bias on that but does it surprise or even frustrate the “senior” guys that my generation holds these players above all others and in our eyes nobody can touch them? And is there more examples they could give that would fit the mould of “ you think this guy is the bees knees but this guy was better”? Brilliant show boys, it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever listened to, not just on H&H but anywhere. Tremendous stuff. 👍🏻

Lee Colvin

Does Walter survive a dodgy start of 91/92 season(Sparta Prague,Hibs skol cup and Sheep defeats),if he doesn't have credit in the bank for the last day title win months before?

Leslie Hibbert

Thoughts on if we had won the EC in 87/88 or 92/93, would the hunger for 9/10 had been the same? Or perhaps would the pressure on 9 been a lot less?

Martin Boyd

Did the chase for the 10 mean our Euro performances suffered or was it just down to Smiths lack of tactical nouse? Or was our appalling injury record down to lack of decent medical care or players abusing their bodies out with the football? I would have really liked a journalist to ask those two questions back in the day.

James Curran

I grew up during this era and loved the players and managers. But with the benefit of hindsight which is always 20/20. I look at this period as a wasted opportunity that with a bolder outgoing vision could have set us up for the future. Duncan Ferguson could have been our starting striker for a decade. Instead we held onto a older player who only had a season and half left in him. Failure to invest in a proper training academy or invest in the latest training and sport science of the time. Our injuries and lack of professionalism was shocking during this time. No real pathway for youth development. Consistent European failure was ignored so we could continue to win leagues in numerical order. With our prestige and financial muscle at the time we could have reinvented ourselves and used the academy models that Ajax & Man Utd were using at the time. Thoughts gentleman?

Martin Davies

Should Walter Smith have been sacked after the awful start in 94/95? I was 18 and remember thinking at the time that we needed a continental manager to take us forward. Maybe Murray had already realised that Europe was a pipe dream and was content to be dominant domestically...but then why did we spunk a fortune under Advocaat?

Lewis Wardrope

You guys have said throughout the series that there were times the fans were unhappy, whether that be due to underperformance in Europe or stumbling to titles due to the opposition being poor and not necessarily being great. Now with the ability of hindsight and everything that has happened since 2012, do you feel guilty at all about being unhappy at any point through the 9 in a row era?

SDF

Was Walter's decision to go three at the back in 1995 a glaring sign that he was further behind in Europe that we actually feared given most of Europe were playing with a back four by then ?

Stewart Thomson

Similar to Scott's question at the beginning of the thread, in a parallel universe where Uefa didn't bring in the (illegal) 3 foreigner rule, who would've been realistic foreign targets for the club that could've put us over the top for the 92/93 champions league run?

Lee Colvin

There have been some iconic shirts in this series so far, which is the best?

Gary Brown

Plenty of food for thought & opinion sought in the very interesting points & questions raised by the guys above👍 On a sightly different tack - In your research Martyn what was the most difficult / clouded / murky / factually diverse (or conflicting!) event or incident you encountered? Something you would not be sure enough of, given the facts, to broadcast (put to print) 'with your name on it' ? If you will - The ultimate ambiguity of your project? I'd be phenomenally interested to know. I'd guess with journalistic integrity you can remain impartial - simply report facts, give quotes by those who made them at the time (perhaps, later 'mis-remembered', as you have shown!) and bring us the 'legend' of the times, from the times. However you being a fact seeker there must be one thing, something (or things!) which you know in your gut (& based on experience) that simply 'don't add up'. Could be something 'ridiculous' or 'inconsequential', like Jan Bartram's bust up with Souey - I'd just be phenomenally interested in what you thought was the biggest 'wall' you encountered or biggest 'mystery' you faced in research from lack of / conflicting facts - bearing in mind this was the very end of 'controlled' output via media, with the internet (>phone cam >social media) age looming, when facts became more instantaneous, so far more difficult to suppress or alter. ps - you did ask!! 😄😉 pps - you know without doubt I absolutely adore your series Martyn. You have done a phenomenal job (aided so wonderfully by the guys👍). I'm eagerly awaiting your book/s. This IS surely THE most comprehensive account of the most amazing, ground breaking, period in Rangers history - and you have encapsulated it for those who lived it, to re-live & reminisce and for those who didnt, who can only learn from it. Thank you!

John Walker

Why did Walter play Miko out of position on the left wing. Captained the USSR team as a roving central midfielder. Who scored goals for fun. He played him there in his first season where he bagged 14 I think. Then shoved him out of position.

John Walker

The one player I wish we should have signed in the early years was Stuart Pearce. He would have been the difference in Europe I thought.

Ritchie Lamond

We had a massive advantage over the rest of the league when the findings of the Taylor report were published. How could and should have Rangers reinvested during that period? Was it right to keep building the first team squad to comfortably dominate domestically during the early 90s and break the spirit of our challengers, or should we have ploughed more money into training facilities and youth development to keep our infrastructure ahead of where the others were playing catch-up?

Craig Robertson

Off the top of my head, some for later shows I guess: How close did we come to signing Lambert? I've always considered that to be the biggest signing error in terms of fucking up 10IAR. Assuming we got Thern instead. If we had punted Smith mid 90s, would we have won 9IAR or does Burns' celtic side stop us at 7/8? I thought I'd heard you (or maybe it was elsewhere on Murray and Me) state that we were run in the black or at least fiscally properly until the summer of 97 where ironically we went on to win fuck all. I now know I must have misheard or misunderstood as we were into our overdraft, but I think I have the basic premise right. Can you break that down and explain it? Or tell me if I'm just way off. Was Souness a rangers fan growing up? What was his affinity to us of any prior to joining?

LAURENCE MACRAE

Did he also not play centre mid for Sampdoria when they won seria A , at that time by far the strongest league in the world ? Surely playing him very often , as a sub who played on the wing is a complete waste of his talent, maybe goes back to some of the earlier points on the lack of professionalism , instead of getting him physically upto the rigours of the Spl it was ignored and Miko also was far from the most professional player when it came to training and off the field behaviour.

Niall MacKay

It seems to be a period of time riddled with career changing injuries: Durrant, McCoist, Kuznetsov, Rozenthal etc. With the players we actually did sign/have across this period, how far do you think we'd have gone had they not had their potential stunted?

Callum Dinnen

Apologies if you're going to cover this during your review of 95/96 but do you think the redevelopment of the corners was a massive missed opportunity? It always strikes me from my seat in the Club Deck how much space is taken up by nothing next to the screens. An extra 8,000-10,000 seats for 20 years (ignoring the banter years) would have been massive financially for us in that time.

Paul Dunnachie

Mildly controversial one but an elephant in the room… The “team that drinks together, wins together” mantra went from something of a badge of honour in 1992 to a millstone around our neck by 1997… and it’s a tricky one because ultimately some of our heroes behaved in ways we didn’t like. I suppose the question is two-fold… 1) How culturally important was this way of re-charging to Rangers at the time - and did it cost us in terms of players leaving/not signing as well as the physical toll it took? 2)Does the panel have any view of why it was tolerated for so long by David Murray in particular? He was paying fortunes in wages & transfer fees yet over 1995-1997 the stories & experiences of meeting Rangers players boozing around town were ridiculous. Had NAIR, and the potential for Ten clouded judgement from top to bottom by 1997?

Dougie

I think there have been several in passing comments about Rangers financial situation throughout the series. But I think a general overview of our financial position and how it changed throughout might contextualise the Murray era better and put the Dominant years in context to how events played out to 2012.

Paul Kerr

Apologies if this was already asked. How much do you think the 90s as a cultural decade impacted our success? There was a lot of swagger among the young working class at the time. It was a good time to be a young Bluenose away from the football. I have always felt it translated onto the pitch. I was curious if that culture was as significant as I think or if we just had better players in the end. Love the show btw Martyn so many memories rekindled. Thanks.

George Gair

The transformation caused by the Souness revolution is a trailblazer in every aspect in how football has evolved (marketing, business development and flexing of financial muscle to name but 3). However the treatment of injuries is frightening! How the 2 main high profile injuries during this period were handled at the time they happened (Butchers leg break and Durrants knee injury) are akin to the dark ages. Given lessons didn't seem to be learned how much more could have been achieved with a proper set up is one of the great what ifs!
