Question, perhaps for Andy McGowan. Will "cost of failure" of the manager be built into the budget? Almost every manager in our 150 years has left while the team has been failing.

Sandy Maclarty

David, I get your point that Gio is a nice guy but that can’t at all affect whether we still want him as manager. Also, totally agree with the point that it’s on Ross Wilson the fact we’ll have to overhaul the squad with a new manager. What would it take for Ross Wilson to get the heave?

Craig

Already looking forward to Aberdeen fans bleating that literally any kick off time on either Saturday or Sunday would be unfair on them.

Craig Fryatt

Will be getting Dean Martin this week as intro music?

Spoon

Good pod as always. Unfortunately despite you saying you would like to see him succeed there seems to be a huge amount taking almost perverse pleasure in the current widespread failure alsmost happy to pile on. I get it’s emotive but some of the language used and comment on him as a person are below our standards for me. I think the point about fans asking ‘who would come in’ is less about getting another fan to come up with a name and more about the concern that if the underlying issues don’t change or they make another Caxinha level appointment then it’s hardly a step forward. I think it’s reasonable for people who are perhaps less sold on shifting the sitting tenant to ask what calibre of replacement is likely to be brought in and what the timescales are for this. I personally would absolutely rather give it time than sack him only to get in a caretaker or temporary or one of the mental names like Martindale being touted or bring back SG. That kind of clamour probably comes from the same people slating Gio for playing boring football or raining in crosses and missing the irony of the two potential replacements likely impact and history. If it’s just ‘ I don’t like him and I want him gone and if I don’t get my way I riot’ then what about all the other fans who would rather have a bit more measured approach ? Do they have to have turmoil just to please the more volatile and reactionary ? I wouldn’t chuck out a TV that worked most of the time but wasn’t perfect and sit looking at a wall until someone else sorted me a new one. I would stick with what I had until I got it sorted or had another to plug in and go. Simplistic, yes but you get my point. Maybe it’s just me but if not getting and upgrade then I’m not setting things on fire just because I don’t like the status quo. I see loads of folk who are more of the ‘anything’s better than Gio’ camp but for me personally that’s flawed logic. Appreciate I’m in the minority and I’m not saying he should stay but I’m not sure some of the stuff flying around is helpful or realistic! Enjoyed the listen as always.

David Martinadale is a wild take - what next, Dick Campbell

Spoon

I can kind of see what people, mean right up until you remember that part of their rationale for kicking out Gio is his ‘awful style of football’ and then saying get in a Martindale in the next breath! Probably the same folk that were roaring about his time wasting from minute one….

Ross Whitehead

I didn't watch the last two games as I was busy doing various things. I'll try to watch the Napoli game on Wednesday when I get back from football training with my daughter. Unless we're getting pumped in the 20 minutes it takes me to get home.

Spoon

Even I can see he’s lost the fans and David rightly highlights that even if he goes unbeaten for 10 then loses one those who have lost faith will jump on it. Exactly like David I let the club impact how I feel way too much, I just hate turmoil snd uncertainty and would rather have a plan in place before rolling the dice. I also can’t be bothered with the inevitable months of speculation, pundit comment and derision of our various rivals. If there is a viable option to get in someone decent even till the end bud of the season fine, I’m just not one for saying sack him now and then start the whole find a new guy process. Seen enough caretakers in the last few changes to last a lifetime!

Craig McRoberts

Understand you call for more measured responses. Ultimately Gio has had only two windows to shape the squad But what is undeniable is the overall decrease in performances over the last 16 months- it began under Gerrard and has continued under Gio. We lost the league from a winning position last year, have suffered two big defeats at Parkhead and been battered in the Champions League. Throw in the performance against USG and it can be argued that the squad is on a downwards trend. The Europa run is in conflict of this obviously but you can only be judged on latest performances and in Europe, performances this season have lacked quality, belief and basics.

Spoon

If you feel that’s all on him then I respect that, me personally I don’t! I think he is in a series of unfortunate events the majority of which are not of his making. I would previously have blamed him for picking guys who keep underperforming but even on that who else does he pick ! Having listened to the recent tactics pod I’m even more convinced he’s being let down by his players and their levels of effort / ability which also ties into recruitment. I agree he will ultimately carry the can as that’s football but I’m not convinced with the right factors he absolutely can’t turn the football around, he categorically will not win back the majority of fans he’s lost however so it’s inevitable.

David Campbell

I thought I was beginning to calm down after Saturday then u here the quotes from the presser again 😠. sadly I don't think Gio has it in him to turn this around. Aberdeen next Saturday is massive he's got zero wiggle room remaining now and the sheep will fancy themselves to get a result. I think this is going to be a very difficult week tbh.

David Herd

I think the bottom line is we will definitely finish 2nd under this manager. And a distant 2nd at that. We very possibly might finish 2nd under a new manager as well, but surely we have to make the change to give us any chance.

Scott Tolmie

What is our way our style as I have no idea

Iain Henderson

I agree with you. Moreover, if what we are saying is that 'he's lost the dressing room' and that then leads to 'he's lost the fans', I think we are entitled to get more than the usual meaningless chat from the players at press conferences. If he has lost the dressing room - why, specifically has that happened; who is leading that dressing room revolt and chooses their means of showing their displeasure? It is no longer sufficient to say 'he's lost the dressing room' and us fans/ the people who shell out tons of money in their direction are just supposed to accept that level of insight.

Spoon

It’s a lovely idea but suspect they are media briefed on what to say and what not to. I detest the idea players down tools for any manager, you might not like tactics or training but to torpedo a guy by switching off or feeling sorry for your self is just petulant and unprofessional.

Colin Mathie

Ally & John Greig are decent guys, they were terrible managers.

Iain Henderson

Yes, it is probably unrealistic for me to expect anything close to transparency on what is going on. That does not make me any less pissed off about that. I reckon that across my kids and I i've spent a lot more £,000's over the last few years that common/ economic sense would suggest I should have. Most of us will be in the same boat. If another supplier of mine that I spent thousands with had employees that turned round as said 'sorry, we just don't fancy delivering that service you've paid for because we don't like our boss' I think i'd be entitled to want to know a bit more than 'sorry about that'

John Smith

Gerrard is 2/1 with Betfair to come back. Not sure they know something we don’t 🤔

Heart and Hand

Spoon is right. No player will ever say that. You can predict it ‘working hard, up to is to improve’ etc.

andrew mitchell

quite simply he needs time to build his own squad(as any incoming manager will) ,the majority of the failures are from the Gerrard era or before, he had no money to spend in January and ended up with a couple of poor loans , this summers recruitment looks good and should be built on imo ...I know that's unlikely though as long as fans are peering over the neighbours hedge and seeing their big flash car that can go from 0 to 6 goals in ninety minutes ,well that car cost approximately 40 mil , I know the last few performances haven't been good enough against inferior opposition ,but for me its about players and recruitment . an example of this from Saturday,he turns to fashion jr to go on n create/get us the goals we need , he was falling over the ball ,letting it hit off himself, losing possession ,was truly awful , that's about the player ie the players he has at his disposal are letting him and us down ...be careful what you wish for

Spoon

I hear you and agree, I could even forgive them if we could see effort, endeavour, winning personal battles, delivering quality performances that due to tactical naivety is being wasted but we aren’t. When they all perform we do pretty well, when we get 7/10 or 8/10 from the majority of the team we look decent, nobody talks about tactics and it’s all gravy. This group currently just aren’t giving that collectively. I just caught up with the tactics pod today and a huge amount of sense was discussed in there. We wanted a more pragmatic manager able to change game to game even in game by its very nature that can look chaotic but it has been overall relatively effective barring a few horror shows. I still believe if this group grew apart, stopped the moping about and committed we could change the narrative, I don’t however believe they will or the manager will be given time and support from the fans to do it. Sad but reality.

Iain Henderson

I agree. Does not stop me wishing it was different. I guess i'm hoping that fan media would have a better chance of uncovering the real story than traditional journalism. But we'll likely need to wait for McGregors autobiography...

Spoon

In some ways I think the problem is we all now know too much, no other commercial business tells it’s customer daily what is going on what’s working and what isn’t. It’s why we love football, if we didn’t have this what else would we do !

Heart and Hand

Correct. It’s football rules: say nothing interesting during your career and then never stop talking after it. The Paul Scholes Effect…

Andrew Whiteside

My opinion is Gio should be given money to bring in his players but would be interesting to hear if others do as that is the crux of it given the circumstances of the squad at the moment.

Spoon

Great points, I don’t want to fall into the if my aunt had the proverbials but….if others weren’t playing high scoring high risk football and (in fairness) making it work I suspect this wouldn’t be in as sharp a focus. Obviously it’s hypothetical but is anyone bothered if we were drably chalking up 1-0s week in week out but we were clear at the top ? Suspect not. It is what it is however and we know who’s for the chop, no director falls on their sword and regardless of fan feeling there is unlikely to be a mass player clear out, more likely just contracts not renewed and replacements for free or loan.

Jim Milne

Gerrard won't return. He will do media work at the World Cup, in fact o Ky way I see him returning is below premier league and I'm not sure he will do that. He will either dissappear like John Terry or he will be on Sky with Carragher. He's been shown up without Beale, and I seriously think he may just do media from now on.

Doug Young

The form and energy of the players has dropped off a cliff. Speculation as to why will inevitably lead to the manager's door. I'm not a fan of Gio's "style" but is that because he doesn't have the players he needs to implement it. My issue is he consistently picks the same woefully out of form players- Kent, Tav, Arfield. Is that because he doesn't have viable options due to injuries or does he just hope that it can't last and will suddenly come good? If Tav isn't injured, there is something seriously wrong with his form and we can all be affected by many more things than just fitness. The most worrying thing for me in the presser was that I got so many flashbacks to Murty and his "lost little boy" period.

Mark

Worth pointing out that young Jerry Yates is 25

John Smith

Do you think he could he could put together a new coaching team and maybe try out some new styles of play ?

andrew mitchell

We were chalking up drab 1-0s and draws for 3 n half years under gerrard, yes there was slow progress and he eventually won the league but if I’m honest I think that was as much to do with celtics poor recruitment that summer and behind closed doors games , their defence of the title was woeful and they should’ve been out of sight before celtics good recruitment kicked in , I go back to this as it’s the same players who are hiding and letting us down , of course gio has no answers at post match pressers … what does he say ? “Yeah I know what went wrong .. the players bottle it and try to hide ,get rid of the ball asap rather than take responsibility” if people think a new manager is gonna come in and suddenly change that I think they’re mistaken , the games about players and recruitment and we have had far too many misses in the past 5 years

Gary Brown

Thanks as ever for the update David. I hope you have an enjoyable few days in Italy. Likely another football lesson at CL level. But realistically our position is hardly a surprise considering the teams we're in with. We go, we play, we learn, we earn! Won't really matter anyway, any lessons learned will be lost with the manager sacked & squad torn up. I can't fault Spoon's reasoning, attitude and well considered views & points raised. Well said buddy. I agree totally and hold the same views and reasoning for them, no point in repeating them. Club wont be spending money on some over priced Blackpool striker when there's big payoffs to make to the entire management team! This witch-hunt mentality is SO prevalent in the English PL, their clubs can afford to do it, but the fans are calling for manager's heads quicker & quicker and they're being sacked quicker & quicker. So there is no continuity of tactics, players brought in by one manager not fancied by the next, fitness, diet and philosophies changed, changed more, changed back and changed again each & every time arrogant and self indulgent fans call for the chop cos they don't like what they see for a few weeks. None of these teams thrive, none are successful, they lurch from crisis to crisis - and a frighteningly high number of fans have adopted that attitude recently which is taking our club more than a few steps down that very, very dangerous path! Big teams; Man U, Arsenal, Everton, Aston Villa, West Ham, Wolves, Spurs, etc, etc have all been on this self harming merry-go-round recently but only the ones who stayed strong with their guy to give the club continuity, a philosophy and a direction have improved and flourished.
