The comparison you made with McLeish in the Liverpool aftermath pod I thought was really apt - even if Gio turns it around and wins the league a la 2005, I think there's a section of the fanbase who will just be waiting for the next slip.

Gary Shaw

Could have put the dug, weanz and the mortgage on big Andy being on tonight 😂

Rona Bluebell

My fear is that 55 and the Europa run were an anomaly. A freak purple patch with these players. One for a full season and then the next a more sporadic burst of spectacular European effort as the league crumbled. Gio has ridden the tail end of this team and now managing the downward spiral.

Andrew

55 and Seville were the exception, not the rule. And with respect to Andy, I want what he’s smoking!

Tamus

Is Andy related to Ryan Kent?

Ron Jeremy

The livi goalie ensured there was plenty stops in play, gio could have got the players together like martindale did to tell them to stop putting aimless crosses in

Iain

Think Andy will need to mute his Twitter notifications for a while after that.

Great pod as always gents, always enjoy Andy’s views and measured comment. I have to disagree with Andy in terms of the two players he felt have a valid gripe in terms of Kent and Sakala. I am convinced when Kent is gone from the club people will rub their eyes and wonder how we played £7 million for a guy who promised much but very rarely delivered. Not sure I saw him struggle manfully myself at the match but what I did see was him all too often hiding when Borna looked up to pass to him. I also wonder how many negative things Alfredo has to do to our detriment before he loses his pass, why is the perceived wisdom always that regardless of how he let us down he has to come back in? If he can't get (and keep) fit, work within the system (if that means playing wide so be it) and most importantly give his application / aggression in the right way then he needs to drop out and we all know he’s past his sell by date. My current fear is we keep down the ‘1 more year’ route. David made a great point around ‘I don’t believe Gio asked them to lump the ball into the box’ or similar, hes absolutely correct yet he carries the can. Well he shouldn’t pick guys who aren’t listening might be a valid comeback but has he ever really had the chance to be choosy with team selection ? The guys he does bring in like Sakala who Andy mentioned was in then out don’t perform. Is it possibly the case that Sakala (and others) doesn’t listen in game, he’s taken out of the team, coached, shows up in training, gets put back in then doesn’t do what he’s told again? That’s what it seems like to me watching, as the boy is to be kind spontaneous in how he approaches a game but given we play a possession / control style that’s probably not a great fit. Andy is spot on against St Mirren guys like Sakala did well, but the very next game he was absolutely gash. I’m not sure how Gio sorts that, particularly as it seems he has a squad of teenage emo’s who mope about when conditions aren’t optimal and are all too quick to let the heads go down. If the manager doesn’t look at who is up for it in training what method should he use, tarot ? We all happily accept someone coming in who has ‘shown up well in training’ so why wouldn’t that be an indicator of readiness and appetite? I think there is far too much tolerance for the idea players can ‘buy in’ to a managers plan. In very few walks of life do you get to opt in or out of the company plan / ethos to the extent footballers are allowed to. Many moons ago as a squaddie I had bosses who (to my gallus young mind) were muppets but as a professional you do YOUR bit and make sure you are the best you can be for you and for your mates, the idea these incredibly pampered guys can just chuck out the managers plan as they don’t like how it impacts their own game is anathema to me! The same goes for the players all needing a cuddle, there’s pro’s in there who are hitting 40 years old, surely it's time for them to take a bit of responsibility. We are far far too forgiving on guys who aren’t cutting it. The disconnect around the finances is something I have been worried about the most. Rightly or wrongly it's easy as a fan to shout for sackings when you don’t have to fund it AND continue to run the football department without massive disruption. Of course, we could clear out staff and players but doing it in a shotgun / short focus way is likely to have more consequences than people realise or want to accept. The reality of where the finances are seems lost on most people. Another rant but you guys are my therapy currently and I want my moneys worth for my sub…..hopefully you take it in the positive way I meant it and not just as contrary for the sake of it. As always genuinely enjoyed hearing differing opinions and definitely always gives food for thought.

Colin McL.

Unfortunately it’s not a fear but reality. This is also the team that threw away a SC QF vs St Johnstone - just one example in a number of abject performances under Gerrard. We can change Gio but the new manager will soon get similar poor performances/results with this squad.

Spoon

Genuinely enjoy your take Andy, don’t 100% agree with it all but I do know it’s not knee jerk and it’s always well thought out. Sadly I suspect we might need your unpopular voice of reason more in the coming weeks! We had a good few months of focusing on football and not off field and we were all getting spoiled.

Alan Weir

Great to hear a reasoned, articulate alternative view. To be honest, what Andy says stands up well against the “everyone is shite, sack them all” brigade. Terrific listen.

Tamus

Was Kent constantly and purposely hiding behind a shop assistant so no one could pass him a lizard

Martin Davies

Andy, re your point on Wilson not be solely responsible for player recruitment. He might not be, but he needs to carry the can for the failure of HIS scouting team. Likewise, he is responsible for recruiting Gio. He has to be criticised with equal measure to Gio for his role in this catastrophic collapse in playing operations. Enjoyed listening to the debate as much as you can enjoy a debate when things are so low - thanks both!

Roderick Boyle

Many points to mull over after this Podcast , one that I totally agree with is the hard fact that our midfield has too many good servants who are sadly nearing the end of their career at the top level . Due to that fact I actually can’t wait for the World Cup to happen and for us to regroup as a team behind closed doors , to hopefully see young Alex Lowry return to the first team and Tom Lawrence, who along with Colak settled into the team very quickly and we have been robbed of the services of Tom Lawrence whom I feel is very much a player who’s style of play we are sadly lacking at this moment in time . As for what is happening with our captain , it is my firm belief that he is carrying an injury as to the untrained eye he doesn’t seem to be moving freely , now the manager denies this and in many respects he is right to do so , but we may well never be privy to this , only a rested James Tavernier in my opinion will come back after the World Cup to be the player we know he can be and play to his strengths and not be left cruelly exposed to his weaknesses as is the case just now . We are all hurting as Rangers supporters , and when we hurt like this we all tend to try and analyse all aspects of the club from top to bottom as we seek to find some sort of solace in the hope that a change here or there will be the silver bullet that will turn us around . To that end my own opinion is that Gio should remain as the manager until at least the end of the season for getting rid of him now I don’t will make that much of a difference. You may well get the short term lift , but not for the long haul of the rest of the season . I go back to my earlier point re the midfield , the engine room of any team , and until such times as that is rejuvenated to give as pace and directness of play coupled with guile we will continue to struggle . All is not lost but it is certainly going to be a tough campaign for us .

Andy McGowan

I agree and I disagree. The scouting team that is perceived to have failed has gone, and I go back to the Managing Director/Director analogy. Good managers trust and empower their staff, when it comes to signing players he is the last 10% of the decision. As for having to follow a failed manager out the door because he was the one who appointed him, I have to disagree. Obviously a sporting director can only have so many missteps, but just like politicians, football manager's stints usually end in failure. If we want to change the Sporting Director alongside every manager we sack then I would see that as damaging and short sighted. My overall point with Wilson is that the underlying long term club strategy should not be dismantled on the back of what is in reality a poor 3 months, but still a 3 months where we qualified for CL on the back of an EL final 3 months previous with record breaking transfer generation - these are not traits of a cataclysmic plan going awry. There has to be some perspective. What needs to happen now is that the plan gets back on track, and that will probably mean a new manager

David A

Agree that the performances have been poor but the results are nowhere near as bad as they are being made out to be and the other mob`s stats are unsustainable. The very least Gio deserves is a full season.

Martin Davies

I accept the Director of Football should not be binned when the manager goes. He's there to provide the stability that you no longer get with a manager / head coach. But he has more than a few missteps. He might only be the final rubber stamp on player recruitment, but he employed the people responsible for the other 90% of rhe decision - if they weren't up to it, that's on Wilson. The squad has been allowed to grow old. As you say, the wage bill is too high - we aren't getting value for money. We're having to top up the youth / B teams with 16-18 year olds from other clubs because we don't have a conveyor belt from our own younger age groups. Wilson may be judged on the recent success of the player trading model, the EL run and CL qualification, but I think we all see a long dark tunnel ahead and Wilson's KPIs will undoubtedly begin to trend downwards.

Andrew Finlayson

I think we’re fucked this season. Goalies … oof, our No 1 is in his 40’s and i have never seen a Rangers No 1 have as many fuck ups as him in the last 12 months. The defensive injuries are ridiculous The midfield is old, slow and there’s injuries there too. The wingers are incredibly inconsistent if you compare our guys to there’s across the city its night and day when comparing their ‘numbers’. Colak is the only bright light of the squad this season.

Euan Dover

Have to say I’m with David on most of these points!

Jamie Derrick

Surely the players need to take more responsibility of our current situation. They have chucked it under the manager and been pretty pathetic

John Buchan

Andy I have run my own fishing business for 35 years . I just totally get your point of view . Normal supporters remind on fishing deckhands or shop floor workers they think businesses are bottomless pits . Gio needs to up his results very quickly though

Gregg

Enjoyable listen - as much as it can be. The point Andy made is an interesting one on Wilson and his remit - the problem I have is I don’t know what his remit is and if has been explained I have missed it. If player acquisitions is a small part and everything is under his control is going well - then a scouting overhaul is required. But the lack of transparency - which isn’t solely on this point - makes it difficult to judge in a reasoned manner and we get what we have now

Ross

Great show again guys! To hear the financial situation and contract/squad situation that’s been spinning around my head explained logically was frightening! Great point on Morelos withdrawn role, you guys never picked up on the show but I sit in line with the 6 yard line in the CD attacking the broomloan, great view back across, so I am not sure you guys have the same view of the game. I don’t think you discussed the biggest issue with selection on Saturday. We actually played a 4-1-4-1 with Davis as a 10 next to Tillman. Davis now playing #10 in 2022!!! 15 years of Walter signed him to do so! That was my biggest issue on selection along with Arfield on RW, especially with 3 x RWs on the bench Morelos dropping into the Davis role is perfect for domestic games at home at least! (Or Arfield) “Best squad we have had” Cheers David & Andy

Doug

The nature of 55 was certainly anomaly, we aren't going unbeaten every season, but we're not a million miles away from winning more leagues. We've been good the majority of season's to a point. It's similar to Man Utd, everyone wrote them off as atrocious (which their performances were) but a change in management and philosophy has paid dividends. We still have a good squad, we know this from what they've done before, but they need new impetus put into them. They need fresh ideas and come the end of the season, fresh faces with the exit of some old.

Duncan.lyon

Enjoyed that, stay safe in Napoli David. Conspiracy about contract extensions, bye bye Gio and so called back room staff, step forward Rangers next management trio. Davis, Arfield and McGregor, they know the club, they know what the fans want, they know capabilities of current first team players and certainly know the youth players we currently have. Most importantly they know WATP Hopefully a Ross Wilson master stroke with the contract extensions, can’t do no worse than what the shambles we are currently in management wise, and would save money. Thoughts David or a pass to Hoggy for the hamper

Doug

"against St Mirren guys like Sakala did well, but the very next game he was absolutely gash. I’m not sure how Gio sorts that" The thing that annoys me, and I think potentially damages the mentality of some players, is that some don't get given the chance to play themselves into form. Others meanwhile seem to be afforded ended patience. Players like Sakala, Tillman & Matondo have come in and out like the hokey-cokey, while players like Kent seem to be undroppable. I think some of these guys need to get given the chance to have a crap game, but still get the nod the following week to allow them to build up a head of steam and make amends. Otherwise I feel like the rare chances they do get end up with heaped with additional pressure as in their minds one mistake means being instantly dropped. As it is, I'm concerned that the way Gio has managed the squad means we've players who always play no matter how bad they are who then get the most grief, and then the ones who barely play get their confidence shattered by being immediately pulled after one bad game. That's surely leaving a squad where everyone's mentality is shatters and downtrodden.

Spoon

Can’t say I agree with Sakala he’s a headless chicken who people seem to think his chaotic style is a bonus, I disagree and I suspect it’s demoralising to play with a guy who runs when he should pass and passes when he should run. I also don’t see any evidence he can follow a game plan. His form dips half to half never mind game to game. I agree on Kent who I think history will judge more harshly than current opinion, he has simply never reached his potential often enough or consistently enough and his biggest fans don’t point to his output or goals but some intangible menace that he brings just by being in the team….I’m not convinced. Add in bullet proof Arfield who still has fans despite his best years being before he even really arrived here, he has been tipped as a bit part player for a few seasons but plays game after game wasting cracking chances, loose passing and doing everything painfully slowly. Non net contributors like Roofe and Helander, bell even Hagi hasn’t to date really given back what we hoped although that hopefully changes. How many have we only had half or less a contract out of ? I think the guys who are rotated in and out happens because he hopes they take on the message and coaching but they then shit the bed and he drops them back out but that’s only a theory. We also don’t have the most patient fsn base when it comes to players playing their way in, a guy I actually think could develop is Wright who seems coachabkenand has some cracking raw talent but he takes a guy on and loses it and he’s suddenly utter shite, maybe if he got time to bed in and play a bit he could improve, maybe we also need to accept that like Kent his talent is in messing up but just going again. Being brutally honest we have convinced ourselves, and been told by the board, we have a really competent squad but the reality is they are no where near as good as we require, even our best players need to be ‘on their day’ for us to get a real return. The only guy we have that seems steady in output is Colak, and half the fans want to pigeon hole him into being a limited poacher while praising a guy who has conned the fans with poor discipline, bad attitude, poor fitness and petulance more than performance. We just haven’t got a tremendous amount of the type of player needed for this league sadly. I take your point but to my mind guy like Sakala need to be far more reliable and ready to take their chances when brought in, I might be wrong but after St Mirren didn’t he get game time V Dundee and was dire ? All about opinions and always good to have your own challenged or hear a different take 👍🏻

Steve23

Very good debate and covered all the key pints/struggles surrounding our club. Andy, I get where you are coming from re Ross Wilson but, there’s always a but, the facts are clear, overall, he has failed and for fans and football, KPI’s just don’t come into it. The corporate board approved a budget for the summer. Overseen by Robertson, Wilson took that money and along with the manager selected players and spent the budget. I think the budget this season, when you include wages and contracts for the the old guard was fairly good and should deliver a team to win domestically. You summarised the hits and misses very well, I don’t mind players taking a while to settle in and I don’t mind the odd miss with a player but with the exception of Colak and Lawerence, maybe Davies, the manager doesn’t appear to like the players he has signed and is still playing with SG’s team. As for most of us fans, your wrong, we don’t expect the money tree to grow and keep giving, we know where we are, but we do expect the money available to be spent well, or at least see the people spending that money to have the commitment to coach and integrate players they have bought into the team. Messaging from Robertson by the way is to blame for any fans expecting more. That’s my biggest problem with this manger, there is no obvious logic in what he is trying to do. Wilson ultimately takes responsibility for that, he either acts to resolve or he takes the blame. Gio gets credit for taking us to a Euro final, fair to a point but I firmly believe SG’s team, philosophy and tactics took him and his staff to a final. He since had a pre season and made signings and the team has regressed significantly. Wilson can take credit for the £25M or so he brought in for Aribo, and Bassey, great, but so what? What about the tens of £M we have lost in sellable assets due to poor contract management? One doesn’t cancel out the other, £25M is good but it should have been a lot better. The footballing board and the coaching team are failing collectively for me. I personally think Robertson, Wilson and Gio have all failed but they need to work out between them who needs to be removed now to fix this and do it now. We all know who will ultimately pay the price, Gio is one defeat away from the sack and it’s now inevitable, it’s just a shame we need to drop more points before they make that ‘decision’ Our club has one purpose, to win football games and as a minimum, win the domestic league, that’s the single reason everyone from the chairman to the ground staff exist.. Right now they are failing. If the manger is the problem, the DOF needs to act, if he doesn’t act, he is to blame and the Managing Director needs to act. If he doesn’t, then he is the problem and the Chairman and the Corporate board need to act. I’ll look at this rather simplistic because I can. Right now, and in the absence of any clear communication and fix from the club, the blame sits with the Chairman as far as I’m concerned, DP needs to make sure anyone, at any level below him does their job and gets this fixed one way or another.

John Smith

Love the Scarface reference

Calum Robertson

Always good to get Andy's take on the issues, financial or otherwise. Ross Wilson is responsible for long-term plan, Gio responsible for team performance. Time to look for new manager I'm sorry to say.

Lewis Wardrope

Christ, I talk about KPI’s at my work. And now I’m listening to podcasts about it😂

Craig

We're in a real emergency situation with the squad at the minute, I knew it was bad but when you break it down player by player there's hardly any at all that can currently be trusted to produce from week to week. McGregor - past it Tavernier - playing injured Yilmaz - not proven Lundstram - playing injured Helander - injured Goldson - injured Hagi - injured Jack - injured/past it Colak - looking good, not a player for every situation though Davis - past it Lawrence - injured Kent - head's gone Souttar - injured Matondo - shown nothing yet Kamara - head's gone Sands - backup option Morelos - head's gone Wright - backup option Ofoborh - lol Roofe - can't stay fit Davies - looking good McCann - not proven McCrorie - third choice to two poor options Sakala - inconsistent at best/not trusted Barisic - pass marks this season, but has ran his race McLaughan - had his chance Arfield - past it King - looking good Tillman - not proven Devine - not proven Lowry - not proven The injuries have obviously taken their toll, but it lays bare that the recruitment and contract management has not been good enough when there's only a small core out of the entire group that can now be relied on to produce consistently.

Maca82

It’s the usual if things are going well on the park we don’t notice what’s going on off it so much, for me the on the park is so far below how it should be we need to address that urgently . Yes the midfield is ageing, injuries plentiful, the signings dubious etc but it’s enough to go to Parkhead and not shite the bed, to beat Livingston, to not concede near double figures at home in the champions league. That’s on Gio and for that he’s done. A nice guy but clueless how to fix this and impose a post Gerrard style

Gary Brown

Thanks for the flagship pod David & Andy. Always good to hear Andy's opinions, always considers the big picture points and variables. Plenty of well considered opinions voiced in the patron comments too.

Nikky Cairney

No disrespect to Andy at all. But you’re trying to defend Ross Wilson without giving any examples of to why? Basically just defending for defending sake. Open your eyes.

Doug Young

Absolutely agree. I just don't get this "Kent doesn't hide and is always a threat" argument. Playing anyone (Wright for example) in that role so consistently would easily match Kent's output this season. The number of attacks we face due to our attacks breaking down with him must be some kind of record.

Craig

I don't think I'm being too alarmist. In the here and now, the injury situation means we've been left to rely on players who can't do it every week anymore, players carrying injuries, players who shouldn't be here anymore and some who haven't had a chance to bed in yet. The squad is badly unbalanced and we've got at least two key areas needing totally overhauled in the next two windows. Hopefully by the end of the season, Matondo, Tillman, Yilmaz, McCann and Lowry are all regular first team options but history tells us it's rarely so straightforward, and if the season goes into a death spiral who knows how that will affect their development.

Robert

I think James interviewed a Feyenoord fan when Gio first arrived here. He was very negative about his style of play and their fans were glad to get rid of him.

Jamie Kirk

Potential shortlist of Gio was to go Dyche Gattuso Fariola Knutsen Neil McCann Kevin Thompson Ronald Koeman Peter Lovenkrands Martindale Steven Gerrard Wayne Rooney Phil Neville Ole gunner solskjaer Tedesco Chris wilder Roberto Martinez

Andy McGowan

I think there is balance and we need to step outside our bubble sometimes. Sacking a sporting director who within the last 12 months has oversaw a Europa League final for a team on our budget and qualified for CL riches whilst also delivering £30m+ profit on two players is notable Whilst that might not matter a jot to us as we watch the fare being served up like Saturday, it is part of the remit for him and is a longer term/bigger picture consideration. Hence why I say there is a fundamental ignorance to his role, and why I take flak for saying it. I truly believe the fundamentals are in place across most aspects of our club and we need to stay the course and maintain some stability, but be agile to changes that will help that course (eg a change of football manager when required)

David Kiltie

Andy and David, well done on an interesting discussion on gloomy subject matter. Andy mentioned the progress the club has made on several fronts in recent years. David felt that this is getting the club to where it should be rather than a cause of celebration. I feel you are both right - the way our club was run in the past was a disgrace and a lot of work has been needed to get the club to where it should be. Gio’s days look numbered but a change of manager isn’t necessarily a panacea, as has been proved at so many clubs. FFP is one of Andy’s pet subjects but we need to get ourselves on an FFP-compliant basis. Tooften Rangers have been “behind the curve” in terms of changes in football, the Bosman ruling being an obvious example. There will be bumps on the road but we need to look long term and see beyond a bad spell of results.

Andrew Finlayson

Hugely successful with them, they haven’t won anything since he’s left and hadn’t won anything the previous 10 years until he took charge. Weird they’d criticise such a successful manager.

Colin Mathie

Glad someone else can see it, his defence of our board to is weird to say the least.

Jane

By the same token Andy we could use that rationale for Gio staying. He got us to the Europa league final and it was his style of play / team picks that enabled us to showcase Aribo and Bassey and get the cash. I think both need to go. The DOF position remains but I'm unconvinced about the real benefits Wilson brings to the table.

David Carslaw

Could Tav's issues be down to him not having a break across the summer? We saw plenty of pics of him training and doing loads of fitness work when he should have been resting.

Robert glen

He did and I remember clearly he said he was very negative and the fans had just had enough of watching his style of play and to be fare to Gio they said his record in Europe was a major issue which really we can’t throw at him

Dave McCann

I do like Andys ability to take a step back and look at the bigger picture, kinda feel for Gio with all the injuries but also at the same time this unwillingness to change tactics ever…73 crosses into a box in one game is mental.

Alan Sheppard

For weeks I have been saying chase everyone including Gio and Wilson but listening to Andy explain his points I am struggling not to agree with regards to Wilson. Making a change in his department will not make our next transfer window dramatically different

Nikky Cairney

Yous be getting rid of a director of football who has in the last 12 months sold Patterson and Bassey yes. But I’d argue with you it was Gio’s development of Bassey that got him sold and for once we sold at the right time. We never sold Kamara, Morelos, Kent or Barisic at the right time and now we will be lucky to make 10 million on all of them combined. He’s signed 26 players and his hit rate is an embarrassment. Who are our sellable assets now? The point about improving the youth set up is madness. Lowry looks a good prospect I agree. King seems highly rated but in all honesty hasn’t looked anything special this season when called upon. You mentioned Cole McKinnon being put into the team next season and then said you never knew how he was doing at Thistle. Who else is there? Results in the youth teams aren’t great. The boys who go out on loan all go to lower levels mostly and do ok and nothing more. Good loans for us like Stephen Kelly or Robby McCrorie don’t make the grade. All in all I just see a defence of people in our club for defence sake. Calling it as you see it when it’s so clearly bad is fine.

Stuart

I am exactly in the same position as Andy tbh, also feel we aren't getting the best out the recruitment cause of gio and the way he plays. Players we know have been decent players have declined this season under his management so why are we holding new signing to their ability but blaming gio for the existing squad Wilson has made mistakes, and don't think he is the best in class but you can't fault find by changing everything at once and gio is the obvious first point of failure for me anyway. Even if we can get to the world Cup in this position, I still think we need a change and give the new management 4 weeks to implement there style.

Jordan Neill

I dont see why we're talking about why do we cross it so much? Our midfield is crap and has been for years yet too many fans out there wanted to keep arfield, jack, davis, kamara etc. Not one creative bone in their body or good goalscoring ability. Thats why they pass the buck and play it out to tav n borna to put a cross in. Dont take any responsibility at all. Midfield has needed addressed for years, Edu was last 7 figure fee we paid for a central midfielder... over 14 year ago

Alastair McGeoch

At the heart of where we are now lies squarely at Wilson’s door. We had a football identity established by Gerrard and players brought into to fit the style of play and Wilson was supposed to be the custodian of that across squads and managers yet he brings in GVB who’s style is the antehesis of Gerrards which is why one first things he did was fundamentally change how the fullbacks played. He relented on that after the 3-0 drubbing at Parkhead. I think we have players trying to play a system they are not comfortable or capable of playing plus we are still reliant on a core of 11 players brought in prior to Wilson joining. In my opinion GVB won’t win is the league and should go but Wilson has to go with him as his tenure has been incredibly poor.
