Perhaps we all defend people who think the same as us, but Andy McGowan is one person who is able to, firstly, see football as football rather than life or death to be assessed on a minute by minute basis and, secondly, able to put some kind of context on the Rangers team we are currently watching. A refreshing change from the irrational, impractical “hang them high, sack them all” nonsense that currently prevails. Stick in there, sir.

james whyte

We are dung. If you think anything else your blind. Kent and Morelos. Sign or piss off. They are both as interested at being at us as Sutton is. Fitness is miles off it across the board and the players have chucked it under Gio. Its a mess.

KAD87

Hard to disagree to be honest. Part of me wishes you’d just lose the plot one day and say “they all need punted” lol, but to be honest your analysis and perspective is more often than not spot on.

Rona Bluebell

Jerry Lee Lewis died during the game but was alive at the end. Nothing makes sense anymore!!! Roll on the World Cup as we all need a break.

Colin Mathie

There were no positives, Napoli took pity on us when they went 2 up in 15 mins and took the foot of the gas, to suggest otherwise is nonsense Andy.

John

Is it bullshit we can’t pass the ball 5 yards

Andy McGowan

Could it not just be the natural ebb and flow of a football game that they started in blistering fashion? That a team starts at such a high tempo that it naturally has to drop as opposed to they collectively decided to ease off? Could we give ourselves that small benefit of the doubt tonight? 😂 Or will we stick with the self flagellation? Throw me a bone Colin 😭

Alan Weir

Lundstram has received yellow cards for exactly the same pulling back of an opponent on more than one occasion. To suggest, Colin, he’s trying to miss the Ajax game is bloody ridiculous. It was stupid but instinctive rather than cowardly as you hint at.

Ecky G

I am not fully understanding what people were expecting out that game tonight. To a man everyone was expecting a drubbing. If our play was going to improve we would have seen it weeks ago. The whole situation is a mess and it is hard to see how we get out of it.

jason hart

Size of a jawa... line of the night 👏

Doug Young

Size of a jawa...hahahaha. Loved Ridvan's forward mentality. He tried a one-two and then was raging at Sands when Sands passed it backwards. Loved that. Other than that... meh. Piles of meh.

Gary Shaw

I agree with a lot that Andy said but some of our basic passing of a football is ridiculous…..And Sands helping up Sineone at the end when he fell on his arse when going for his hat trick is everything that is the matter with this side…

Gary Shaw

There’s one in the first half were Morelos received the ball from Tav down their left hand side and everyone who’s ever watched Rangers knows he’s going to blast it across goal and there’s Kent hardly even breaking into a jog to get in at the back post for a goal

Brian Moore

When Andy McGowan say that a positive is “the team not capitulating after 2-0 tells us everything we need to know. We are shite, players, management, club! 😞

CJT

Thanks gents. Cathartic as always. Interested on comments on intensity. We're not the only team that comes off a season with so many games that required and huge degree of physical and mental effort. Not an excuse for some who have clearly checked-out but maybe for others it is understandable rather than excusable. Factor in these extraordinary athletes we see in the CL recruited from circles we can't shop in then there's maybe more to it than lack of effort. Saying there was nothing positive and the clear improvement in the 2nd half is only down to Napoli eating off is symptomatic of the current mindset of fans. If you wanted you could look at it as we got a wee foothold and competed against a really good side. That would require positivity and a an ability to break away from the current view that everything is shite. Not sure where we go next with this. Saying to players and coaches 'we can't invest in players of the right level but come to us and even if you win a cup, get to a European final be in the sem-ifinal of the next cup and second in the league we'll hound you out should there be a dip in form' I guess we'll see.

Gary Shaw

We came into the game and had a go when the game was gone, the same way we did at Anfield….the same way that teams do with us domestically…it’s called an inferiority complex and it’s why St Mirren and Ross County players hardly ever get a move to Rangers and why Rangers players don’t get moves to high end EPL or Serie A clubs…if we’re looking at this as a positive then the baw is well and truly burst for Gio

Tamus

Alfredo Morelos is an unfit fat mess - shameful

Nikky Cairney

Surely Cammy and Andy can see when it goes 2-0 tonight Napoli totally step off it. We never came into the game because of anything we done. Same as Anfield and same as Ajax. Open your eyes guys.

jamey Carruthers

Barisic has been absolutely dreadful the idea he's been playing well is just nonsense.

Doug Young

Compared to pretty much every other player this season, he's been a star. Which is not saying much, granted.

Gregg

Thanks for sharing mate - always look forward to your comments, provide a different perspective. Thought provoking as ever.

David McCallum

Was never expecting a result but looking for signs of at least improving on attitude, shape etc. No capitulation after their 2nd at least shows a bit of resilience. That said they probably stepped off at 2 nil knowing the game was won.

David McCallum

I don't think it's realistic for us to go toe to toe with these sides away from home in the CL.

Tommy

He’s utterly diabolical. But there’s been a few games lately when he’s been marginally better. But to say he’s been playing well suggests we’ve lost perspective on what constitutes a good performance. Which is understandable considering how utterly abject we’ve been. Appreciate you boys trying to put some sort of polish on it but I can’t really say I’m on the same page

Andrew Whiteside

Question I have that has to have an impact on the team. I have heard it said that at rangers the toughest game for the players was in training. With so many injured that has to have a knock on effect on the standards on the park. Could this be a factor in the lack of intensity and quality in games?

Lewis Wardrope

I’d assume Barisic will also go to the World Cup

Spoon

Andy your voice of reason is absolutely needed and valuable to offset some of the OTT doom and gloom stuff that seems in gouge don’t be put off as the narrative your a single voice and nobody else shares a lot of your views is nonsense. The enthusiasm for the CL has met harsh reality. For me it might have helped us mentally to have been more competitive in the Europa and take the positives from being more in games than just chasing shadows. I tend to agree with Andy, in context it was a lot better than most were expecting and at 2-0 I was actually wondering if we could nick one back, we should probably have had at least one if we hadn’t still been desperately hoping Morelos would somehow channel his 2019 self and not be the unfit huffy version we have now. Great pod 👍🏻

Andrew Whiteside

Sakala gets in the team right now because he has positivity and physicality. In terms of coaching him he has to want to be better. Scott wright’s main problem is he is too lightweight and not fast enough to compensate.

Lorraine Murray

Here, here Andy McGowan! Thank you for pointing out the few positives. Let's not ignore them. It's difficult enough!

David_Davy_Dave

I think that was an improvement. The reality here is it’s not Napoli or Liverpool that has really cost us. Regardless of draw we should always be targeting 3rd place and EL after Christmas. Had we not collapsed in such a feeble fashion v Ajax then we might be going into the next game knowing a 2 goal win might still be enough I can just about accept the CL being a struggle and matches like last night. I can’t accept us being so weak v another club that is EL standard and that’s where Europe this season becomes a negative for Gio that adds to the pressure from underwhelming domestic form

Angus Mackay

The problem with Wright and Sakala, as I see it, Andrew, is that neither is consistent. Sometimes I think one is much better than the other, but then the next game seems to turn things on their head. I think that's why the manager can't settle on selecting one of them reasonably consistently. Sakala was as good as he's been last night, so hopefully he can take courage from that and build some consistency. Poor Wright had an awful night.

Gary Shaw

Why not???…if we’re going to get hit for 3,4 and 7s we would be aswell trying to give them a bloody nose on the way…the other mob constantly have a go in Europe, and yes they’ve had a couple of defeats but it’s not for the want of trying to attack sides and they have been unlucky with misses/sitters and hitting the woodwork…us on the other hand look terrified to get to within 5yds of opposition players

Nikky Cairney

Where in my comment have I said I expect us to go toe to toe with these sides away in Europe? However we’ve proved we can over the last few years compete with these types of teams. That wasn’t Napoli’s first team. Far from it. All I want is a team who will work as hard as their opponent. We aren’t even doing basics.

Nikky Cairney

Also Andy saying Lundstram never got booked to miss next week? He knows he’s a booking away and purposely picked up the most needless and obvious booking possible. Don’t know what else it can be other than him missing next week on purpose if he’s been booked on purpose.

Calum Downham

I understand the need for being optimistic in dire situations but this is not the one. Andy- we deserve 0 credit from preventing Napoli from scoring more. The fact they didn’t is down to them, not us Individually, it was some of the worst performances we’ve seen this season. Lacking fitness, desire, commitment. Lacking all things that you expect from a Rangers team when against an opponent of superior ability. Agree with you on Scott Wright. He’s an average SPFL player who’s suited to any 10 ‘other’ teams in the league.

Ryan Stewart

We have started the last 4 halfs of football with a different player at RW. Arfield started against Livingston, Matondo was brought on at HT. Wright started last night and was replaced by Sakala at HT. That for me just sums up where we are. The squad isn’t good enough, but Gio also isn’t getting the best out of what he does have available

Bob MacCallum

I was pleased when I saw our starting line-up. Gio said prior to game that we couldn't just defend for 90 mins. We had to pose a threat too. Correct. So his formation had 2 protecting midfielders in Lundstram and Sands with 2 supposedly speedy wingers to get us up the park. Morelos to hold the ball up to bring them into it or for attacking midfielder, Tillman, to support. All great in theory BUT the players were dire and couldn't implement Gio's plan. Kent, Wright were pathetic. Alfie a shadow. Playing Yilmaz was correct but lack of game time showed. Why is nobody talking about how disgraceful our captain was? He could have cost us 3 or 4 goals tonight. Trundling around, misplaced passes or ones that put team-mates in trouble, no energy, no leadership - a sham of a player / captain. Don't care if it's injury or form he should have been dropped ages ago. Been diabolical all season. His stand-in, Zukowsky, should be playing...oh, wait a minute, with great foresight, we sold him to Poznan. Get Devine in now...or even play a midfielder there eg Davis couldn't be any worse than Tav's been this season. As for McGregor...another who should never be playing. 1st goal he's static, standing upright, stuck one lazy hand out to stop shot. Didn't even dive, to make it at least look like was making an effort. 2nd goal, headed on 6 yard line and where was our keeper? Not there. We all know where he was. Ditto 3rd goal. Most of players are off form, with no replacements available. Terrible situation we're in right now.

Simon H&H

It’s absolutely brutal. Every game it’s the same with these RW HT changes. We are nearing the end of the managers time here, we can’t be caught sleeping when it comes

Gregg

Re selling the young polish kid - I think this could be seen as a positive in that young Devine has kicked on and progressed better than he did. These things happen when taking a punt on younger players I guess.

Sandy Maclarty

Thank you Andy. Listening day after much needed lift to my mood.

Angus Mackay

Thanks guys. Good balanced assessment of the night and a merciful relief after reading the entitled and morbidly negative output from much of the support at the moment. I've had my own doubts about Gio in the past couple of weeks because it seemed the pressure was getting to him and he was doing what he thought people wanted him to do, but last night's approach was much more like him and I think that's why it worked better. Hopefully he sticks with that at the weekend and can buy time until the world cup. I get that things are not good at the moment, but it's a bit of a perfect storm in a lot of ways and I can't believe the number of people that have apparently forgotten that it was only this spring that the guy gave us some of the very best European nights of our lifetimes. I honestly believe that if we show patience and sanity as a support for a few weeks we will be rewarded in due time. One point that I would contend with is that Sakala hasn't been improved. I would say that technically he's improved noticeably, his touch and capacity to deal with being pressed is much better than it was last year. His instinct is still often wrong, but I'm not sure how much that can be coached into someone. Thanks again guys, it was a really good listen.

Angus Mackay

Also, as a PS, I think the apparent fitness issue is rather a combination of the psychological result of the beatings and cumulative tiredness because of injuries rather than fitness itself. Nobody noticed it until post Ajax, which is when the bad times really started. If We can get a few players back fit and can get of the twice a week treadmill we should also see that improve. Celtic have few injury worries and they're noticeably slower since their CL campaign kicked in.

Angus Mackay

It's also interesting to note how balanced the views are in here compared with the likes of FF. Sadly the latter seems to have just become a trollfest now.

Dingus

Agree 100% with Andy. Need to be realistic about massive step up in class from what we face domestically. While I think the first 2 goals are down to world class crosses you also have to factor in that our central defence consisted of an 18yr old newly promoted from youth football, and the other has played around 4 x 90 mins this season. Plenty positives we can hopefully take through til the WC.

Colin Carstairs

Keeper for me was a tad flat footed for a 1st & 3rd goal maybe ? A team who are out run, out fought & lack the desire will never ever compete no matter who it’s against & for me that’s the most disappointing aspect of these games . Add in the fact that this form continues to seep into our most important part of the campaign is more worrying. Leadership starts from the management & there seems to be a lack of with this group.

David Millar

FF needs to have a think about what it is because some of the invective used about people in and about our club far less other posters is beyond the pale.

Ryan Stewart

I think a lot more people would be more understanding of the step up in class argument if we hadn’t been pretty terrible domestically as well. Motherwell, Dundee and Livingston aren’t step ups in class

Dingus

Competing with and matching the movement of a top quality CL side is completely different to trying to break down sides that have a single objective of stopping you scoring. The lack of domestic intensity is a major factor in why we’ve struggled in this season’s CL.

Stuart McCall

Do our lads think if they continue to tell us they are winners that we will believe them? Or maybe if they tell themselves enough they will magically turn into winners?

George Harrison

We need to get rid of Morelos in the next transfer window, if anyone will buy him. He’s taking £30k a week out of our club, and is contributing very little. He’s overweight, lazy and getting away with it …. check out his pre match ‘warm up’ this weekend …. as usual, he’ll be at the back of the line, giving 50% effort, an absolute embarrassment. What happened to the player of 3 seasons ago ?

Gordon Black

Matondo was supposed to be the sum of Sakala and Wrights best attributes plus more... That is not going well

Alan Henderson

Simply don’t agree with much of this pod lad. Gers are truly garbage to a man.

Alastair McGeoch

I love the pod and the balance presented but find this one quite depressing. A number of the teams we played last season are Champions League level (Dortmund, Frankfurt) teams from previous europe league seasons also (Porto etc). We were able to compete over previous seasons but we’ve lost our fitness, we no longer press high and have no real patterns of play or belief anymore. Our defending at set pieces is terrible and our attacking set pieces are useless also. A telling comment on the pod was about players clear deficiencies and not being coached. That all lies with GVB and his team. More time on the training ground with GVB will regress us further based on last seasons winter break where he dismantled Gerrards playing style and we stuttered into a 3-0 doing at Parkhead and this seasons preseason where we have been stuttering from the beginning of the season with a series of heavy defeats in our biggest games so far.
