A dismal defeat which surely must mean the end of GVB at Ibrox.

Comments

Gazza G

Has he gone yet?

William Black

The end of Gio and Wilson. There is no point in sacking Gio and keeping Wilson. Apologies if that upsets anyone but Wilson bears the brunt of the blame here.

Scott McDougall

It’s hard to take just how badly we’ve regressed since winning 55.

Stuart cunningham

He has to go there is no way back the football we are playing is garbage

Iain watson

Time for Sean dyche,I want to see a hugry gers team that fights for the jersey

Rona Bluebell

Hindsight is wonderful etc, but getting whipped by Celtic was the end. It’s my perennial view, no rangers manager can recover from that. This team are psychologically flawed, that started before Gio but he’s unable to stop or turn it. Clear out and rebuild.

Douglas Innes

Can we afford the change though ??

Gary Shaw

This is the best time to pull the trigger and get a new manager in as it would give him 5 weeks with the players…We have 10 players out of contract in the summer and maybe another 1 or 2 who’ll be moved on..Do the board really want Gio to be in charge of that overhaul?

John Mclevy

The manager has to go, Ross Wilson should go also and a few of the players that have chucked it can go in January Kent being one of them

Graeme McLeod

The manager has to go but I don't think a change of manager turns the dross Ross Wilson has signed into world beaters. The reason Celtic's recruitment works is because they bring in players their manager has either identified or who suit his style - we're letting Ross Wilson sign players despite several transfer windows where the squad hasn't been improved by them, never mind the starting lineup. The rot starts with the directors and spirals down to the manager. Just sacking Gio doesn't address the root cause of the regression since Dave King stepped down. (And I'm not suggesting he was perfect by any means, but this board have repeatedly shown they cannot and will not take the club forward.)

Rona Bluebell

Surely the compensation in for Gerrard can be used as same for Gio out? Or organise a Go Fund Me, I’ll donate

Mr J K Murray

Was at Braga away & knew then this team are not consistent, the obvious lack of team pace with additions, not seen mud on Colacks shorts or others, & Kent just struggles as some players are not of a standard required since the last decade, this constant issue of monies, and just plain bad management, last year we lost the league due to this inconsistent team, nothing learned on or off the pitch except when we lose, then it is just the same nothingness, better wake to the warnings as this is drifting to being just a losers club

chris smith

Are the board waiting for the takeover to happen so that they dont have to pay off Gio and his staff out of their own pockets? Really difficult to see anything really changing for the better until the board, their man Wilson, his man Gio and Gerrard’s failed players are gone.

Jamie Derrick

Manager should go along with Wilson but don’t think the will be sacked don’t think we can afford too. We have a board who have failed to capitalise in 55 and on champions league football now so just can’t see them sacking him but the players are the major issue for me. Too many been there too long and a massive clear out needed including our captain but don’t think we have the money to do it

Martin Davies

Managers don't get fired because of one or two results. So I hate talk of manager being fired unless he picks up 3 points in the next game - it's already too late at that stage and it's inevitable. He should be gone tonight. It is too late for this season's title, but it is not too late for a new manager to have some input into the January transfer window. I don't trust Gio and Wilson to get it right. Both have to go. Oh, and if that's what Kent and Morelos are going to offer us for the next 6 months, they can find new clubs and go for free in January rather than hang around any longer.

David Baillie

20 corners every one an out swinger. One header won (Sakala off the bar). Surely at some point you would change it up and play an in swinger or play it short. Anything to make the opposition work. It was all too easy for St Johnstone as it was for Livingston. Groundhog Day right enough. Gio looked lost and bewildered in his post match interview. As with his team he’s way too nice. No aggression, no devilment, no winning mentality. If anyone has listened to Ceri Bowley’s interview on H&H its no wonder we’re playing like this. Psycho babble nonsense. I actually fell asleep after half an hour.

Gary Shaw

Spot on Martin…Ive never understood this”if he drops points today,he needs to go” patter…when fans are talking like that, you know the game was up months ago

Steve23

The Aberdeen result was a clear outlier and that was as much to do with the oppositions tactics. I take absolutely no joy in calling for a managers to go but it has to be now. Wilson needs to join him. I said a few weeks ago it’s just a question of how much damage is done before the decision is made, sadly the delay has cost us any real prospect of the league and the financial implications that brings as well. The most infuriating aspect to this is it was clear as day for a long time now this was inevitable. I’m personally sick of saying ‘let’s suck it up and start again’ this is 100% self inflicted and is gross mismanagement by the board. A failure to act much earlier is a negative reflection of Mr Park as chairman, a failure to act now is downright negligent.

James Anderson

He inherited a 6 point lead last season and blew it. 7 points behind this season....taxi for Gio..👋

David

Can't argue with anything you said, Davie. Gio and Wilson really are finished at Rangers. Can or will the board act? I'm not convinced.

Spoon

Gio now has to go as a major change is needed but when he does I hope we don’t get the usual platitudes from this bunch of absolutely failed players. The big names and big fee guys or those who have hung around well past their sell by dates are a disgrace and also need to go asap. The thought of resigning some of those going out of contract again for any reason is would be madness and soul destroying. Kent , Morelos, Arfield, Kamara etc all currently stealing a wage for me, zero quality, little in terms of effort and for some reason get passes from many fans. Sickening failure from the players and ultimately getting the manager the sack through lack of basic football skills. Let’s get this done asap as regardless of folks claims we sack Gio and save the season that’s just a pipe dream it’s a rebuild that will take at least a season that’s on the cards. It won’t be pretty and it won’t be quick as this current lot of players are woeful

Gordon Millar

Well said David - The biggest disappointment is the scale of the task that any new manager will inherit. For me we need a good man-manager similar to McLeish when Advocaat left as an interim and give us time to recruit the right manager for next year......not easy I know but that's what I want.....as for today those players were a disgrace to the jersey.....the manager gave us no hope he could turn it around, for me the Aberdeen result showed how he thinks football should work, if you have a go and leave space we will punish you, however if you play a low block we will punch ourselves out.....guess what the majority will do in our league...

Alan Black

The signs have been there since January, we have all but handed them two titles by dithering in getting him out. Wilson / GvB are taking us back to pre Gerrard levels of incompetence.

Gregg

If this is allowed to continue we could be heading towards our very own ‘sharkgate’. The board have to make the decision now - Gio deserves to go with more dignity than is about to unfold if not. Probably gave me the greatest night of my rangers supporting life v Leipzig but that’s done now. Some of the personal comments - whilst not as bad on here - should be beneath us as a support. Standards aren’t just for employees.

David Johnson

Not sure where you start with that today but that was a fair summary David. Key point being that it is clear this isn't going to be turned around by the current regime, and I can't see how by the current players either. For that reason Wilson absolutely has to follow Gio and his team out the door. I can't understand how how the guy who's tactical nous took us to a bawhair from a European trophy is the same guy who can't break down SPL dross. Yes we've lost two key starters since then (the failure to replace them is down to Wilson) but the rest have all been pish since then.

Martin Davies

The manager is quite rightly getting it in the neck tonight, but I'm fizzing about the players too. I'm actually sick to death of the entire squad, every single one of them. I'm sick of the attitude of Kent, Morelos and Kamara. They clearly want away and show all the signs of players who have downed tools. What they don't realise is that their time at Rangers will be the pinnacle of their career, and on recent form, they'll be fortunate to find an English Championship side willing to offer them a contract. I'm sick of the Tavernier and Barisic roller-coasters. Tav is like Roy of the Rovers one minute, then defends like a Sunday league player the next. Borna can't defend a cross from the opposite flank and his confidence issues make him unreliable. I'm sick of Davis and Arfield getting game time at the expense of McCann and Lowry. I'm sick of Roofe, Helander, Jack and Soutter being permanently injured. I'll always look back on 55 fondly but that's in the distant past and this group of players have delivered us more disappointment than silverware. I won't be sorry to see the back of any of them.

Gary Shaw

Don’t worry,we’ll tonk Hearts on Wednesday night and the most fickle fans in football will be on saying how good we can be when we want to….Aberdeen were extremely poor and open last week and it was all down to their set up rather than anything special we did…If Tav can’t manage to pull us out a hole for the hundredth time then we have absolutely nothing….

Pete

Spot on William. Pointless just sacking gio, Wilson is as much to blame.

Peter Hosie

David, if he’s here for your next presser then you have the chance to ask a direct question re the corners and throw ins and why is it always JT and BB. You also need to ask why was there 19 outswingers in this match not counting the matches before yet there’s no variation. It’s basics 🤬

Nom De Ploom

Spot on David. It's a defeat that's shocking how it turned that way after that start but if anything, it should(!) mean he eventually falls on his sword now instead of limping on with draws here for there the rest of the season that would be inevitable. That other lot aren't invincible & if we can get someone in with a single iota of a plan then we could maybe pull it back. A clear out of the players is needed regardless.

Fraser Black

He needs to go to save anymore embarrassment & humiliation & be thanked for everything he did in Europe last season. However, I can’t see much improving until the end of the season regardless of who comes in. This squad is completely busted from top to bottom, whether it be contracts, age, injuries, quality & needs a complete overhaul in the summer. I still stand by previous comments that this shambles lies as much at the door of Wilson as it does Gio, & he needs to go as well. This season has to be written off, get a manager in who can then plan ahead of who he wants to keep & use the next 6 months to identify, scout & negotiate for the summer. Just please not Portuguese . . . 🤦🏻‍♂️

Cal macleod

We all knew we were going to drop points today , the same way we all know the board will drag their feet until it’s too late to save the season , it’s the inevitability of it all that’s so depressing

Cal macleod

He won’t fall on his sword though , very few managers ever do , he’ll wait to be sacked so that he gets his contract paid out , and with our board that will be once the league is well and truly out of reach

Nom De Ploom

Time will tell but surely the board can see the same as everyone else which way this is headed. If he doesn't get binned things are likely to get ugly at home games.

Jim Milne

I got up at 5am here to watch the game. I should've stayed in bed. I think Gio the person is a phenomenal human being and I so wanted him to succeed. I was super excited when I seen Roy Makaay was going to be a coach, then the Ajax youth coach. Fuck me on paper it's a dream ticket. In reality they aren't good enough. I don't know who we replace him with but that can't be used as a reason to keep Gio. I knew after 55 and Europa Final that there would be the inevitable downturn but not of the magnitude we've seen. Look across the city. McGregor gets a potentially season ending injury. They bring in £5m Habsovanovic, and that's the difference. They depend money wisely on players who improve their first 11, we sign players we think are projects and will sell for £20m in 2 seasons. Goldson's absence is huge IMO....I could rant all day. I'm extremely sad and frustrated at our club from top to bottom. 7 points isn't impossible but how long do you leave it until you make a change? It is a terrible shame it's come to this. Gio was a penalty kick away from immortal-legendary status. Nice guys don't always make it unfortunately. Rant over.

Gregg

Pretty reasoned Jim - not a rant at all. Think we all wanted him to succeed but sadly it’s just not worked out - sure it’s not for the want of trying

Gary Nelson

The league has been over for a couple of weeks now! The squad is simply not good enough and real lack of quality and creativity! It’s time up for Gio and Wilson, the question is can the club afford to pay them all off!!

Graham Jones

Too may projects signed, too many players re-signed and not enough quality injected into the first eleven. Most of those signed are really squad players right now, and wouldn’t be getting as much time had we no injuries. I’ve always gave GvB the benefit of the doubt, and this was for what he almost achieved last season with a squad that wasn’t improved for several windows, but I don’t think he has the ear of the dressing room anymore. Today they just looked feeble at times. We didn’t look like a team in a race for a league title, and that was worrying. However, if GvB goes, the the same can be asked about Ross Wilson. His performance has at least been as bad during the past two years, and possibly worse. I know he’s told what to do by the board, but let’s face it, they haven’t shown any real leadership for a long time now. I sometime think King needs to belt up at times, but he usually makes points that have validity to them. Nobody’s driving the bus, some might say.

David Herd

We've dropped 17 points more than Celtic have since the start of 2022. There's just no other choice to make.
