David and Alan are with Martyn this week to look back at a seismic winter in the history of football. The Bosman Ruling changed the transfer market forever just before Home Office red tape thwarted a move that could have changed Rangers history. Gazza and referees, 'Andy Goram broke his heart', Alan Johnston running riot and Walter Smith leading a drunken conga around Covent Garden are all on the agenda plus a lot more.

Did Liverpool not field an XI without an English player in the mid 80s?

Callum Dinnen

In terms of shooting the 'wrong way' at Parkhead we did it a couple of times under McLeish (funnily enough in games I was at). The last league game of 2001/02 where we drew 1-1, Lovenkrands' early goal was right in front of us at the Rangers end. Ricksen's equaliser at the start of the 2nd half in the Scottish Cup game in January 2005 was definitely at the other end of the ground from where I was standing (I think that was the one and only time I had a ticket for the upper tier).

Mortram taught my cousin - used to sit in class reading his Rangers News (Mortram no my cousin).

If we signed Jardel in 96 in place of Negri in 97 do you think we’d have won 10/11/12 in a row?

Alexander McKeever

Another great episode.Jardel would have scored 50 per season!

Callum Dinnen

Knowing our luck he'd probably have blown his cruciate against Hearts in January 96.

Callum Dinnen

On the Jardel signing I'm curious as to the thoughts of Martyn et al as to how they think Jardel would have settled into the dressing room culture of the time? Despite the easing of the foreigner rule it's still very much a British drinking den at this point and it's striking how few foreign players actually work out at Rangers during Smith's first spell. Laudrup is the obvious exception but I get the feeling he was accepted into the dressing room culture simply because his on-field talent was so exceptional. There's a litany of foreign players throughout this period (Miko, Boli, Salenko, van Vossen, Bo Andersen) who don't exactly flop but they don't stick around for an extended spell either and get quietly moved on. It wouldn't have surprised me if Jardel maybe plays 30 games over the 18 months to summer 97, scores 10 goals, and then gets sold having not quite fitted in at Rangers.

Martyn Ramsay

Laudrup got involved more than people think! Case by case basis but Albertz came in that summer and worked out ok. I think Jardel was an outstanding talent and was on the way up unlike some of the others you mention. Given the party nature of his career, would that dressing room have propelled him to misery sooner? Maybe but he was doing a fair amount of coke at Porto with the knowledge of the club and managed alright. Probably never destined for a long and consistent career anywhere but I think he’d have been sensational here if he moved that winter. His numbers for 6/7 years after were just too phenomenal. He wasn’t Erik Bo Andersen

I remember sitting on my rsc bus after the game mr and mrs Jardel had attended and the bus in front had a rather large poster of a naked mrs Jardel across the back window🤪🤪

Samuel Campbell

I didn't realise the Jardel move was that close. I'd have been 13 at the time but in my memory he was just always one of those names that was linked with a move

bluedan1873

Jardel eh? Still makes me depressed about what could have been but knowing us at this time he probably would've got injured long term. I actually got his autograph anf saw his gorgeous wife in person. I remember making photocopies of the autograph and selling a few of them at school for 50p a pop, haha.

Gordon Smith

I personally think it’s highly likely. However he could have taken the huff, sat in the stand and only shown interest in the club when he had a book to punt.

Pedro

Imagine having Jardel, Laudrup and Gazza.... This is the best pod on the site lads. Superb stuff.

Martyn Ramsay

Probably would have won 10. There’s another signing sliding door to come that’s arguably more important in that regard.

Fraser Black

That Partick Thistle game when Gazza scores 2, the highlights on YouTube are just unreal when you see that man in full flight. Also, him taking the utter piss out of the wee guy McDonald & looking through his legs after megging him is comedy gold 🤣🤣 the guy was just pure entertainment. Great point re refs just being intimidated by his fame. Did his goal against Hibs in the 7-1 get goal of the season??

Gary Brown

Thanks again Martyn for this latest episode and thanks to Alan & David too. Every episode of Dominant gives me a warm glow of pride & satisfaction as we wander down these memory lanes. What's the latest time frame on the book (Vol 1) Martyn? This is why we refer to that top as the Gazza one! Probably at the very top of his game from autumn/winter 95 until autumn/winter 96, his best form since the 91 injury. Ah Jardel, the one that got away. As ever, looking forward to the next thrilling episode if this wonderful series.

Paul Dunnachie

Great programme to provide memories of quite a season - one that is forgotten a bit given the next season and what was at stake. The refereeing of Gascoigne was a joke by the time we got to Feb/March of 1996.. there was a lot of anger towards referees and media about it and the support probably excused and tolerated just about anything from the squad and Gascoigne in particular as a result. Some wonderful football though. The Hibs game was superb - the freedom that the players showed that day was an utter joy to witness. Jardel certainly one that got away - I fear it would have been short-lived in the end, or the injury curse would have hit to curtail things but the prospect of getting 2 and a half seasons out of him…

Callum Dinnen

Something that sprung to mind when giving this another listen on the commute home, was it the Keith game where Gazza and Super had a wee kiss when (IIRC) Gazza burst Ally's lip while scoring? Or was that later in the season at Starks Park?

Callum Dinnen

I definitely remember us wearing that red and white quartered kit when it happened

Martyn Ramsay

Actually, it was neither. Happened at Tannadice when the cup QF against ICT was moved down there. The harlequin strip though, yes.

Callum Dinnen

If it's Lambert then I think he usn't signed purely because Smith has been fired and Murray is reluctant to sign players the new manager might not want. There's an argument Lambert might have gotten in the way of Barry Ferguson's development as well.

Alan Bradley

Yep you’re right. I mixed that up with the game midweek during the following season where they both did that silly run down the side after one of our goals.

Scott Christian

Great episode and welcome company for the turbo trainer! Brief comment- I always felt like Gascoigne on a football pitch in Scotland was like Fry in Fututama rescuing everyone from the burning building after his 100 free coffees!

Campbell Maclennan

Superb insight. The Jardel case was a sickener. Our youth football team knew Brian Reid who came to help with training at that time. We asked if Jardel was coming and the flat answer of "No" was given. Also looking at his wiki, seems a colourful character, still got a passion for the money and doesn't seem too bothered about how he gets his hands on it.... He might not have have been around Ibrox for long but he would have been sensational....

Colin Mathie

I was at that game at Firhill where Mottram didn't give the ghost goal.
