That Aberdeen game was on my 11th birthday. Possibly the best birthday present I could have. I was delighted the game got moved to a Sunday as the 28th of April was last a Saturday in 1990 and wouldn't be a Saturday again until 2001, so I was desperate to see Rangers win as a birthday present!

Funny how the memory plays tricks! I would have bet my mortgage that the kiss between Ally and Gazza was at Starks Park!

As much as the Cup Final was a great team performance the individual performance from Laudrup that day is far and away the best I’ve ever seen from a Rangers player…It’s the only game in all my life watching Rangers that every time he got the ball I thought to myself they literally can’t get the ball off him.

A fantastic discussion at the start regarding the national team and all those goings on. I think the start of the CL among societal changes spurred on, not just Rangers fans attitudes to National teams, a lot of club fans in to realising that their team was the more important aspect of following football. That whole swing in the 90s, coupled with Scotland's changing attitudes in general, as well as the tin pot attitude of Brown, really ended the National team for a generation of us Gers fans.

As a kid in the 80s, you'd have found me running around with Rangers and Scotland strips. Fast forward to the early to mid 90s, and my passion for the national team had completely evaporated with the treatment of Rangers players/managers by the SFA and Roxburgh/Brown. I still have complete apathy towards Scotland. My son is 17, dyed in wool bear, but has gone to a few Scotland games with his mates recently. I won't influence him in any way and let him make his own decisions on the national team.

It's funny you mentioned the Smith interview with Hazel Irvine, as the project has rumbled on one of the things I've wondered is that whether Walter, if he could have his time again, might have timed his exit a bit differently.

That Gazza hat-trick v Aberdeen that won the league started a chain of events that ended up with me moving to Dublin and forming the Dublin Loyal.i was still out celebrating on the Tuesday and met my now wife and the rest as they say is history!!!

Me too, but I actually thought it was there in the NIAR season when we won about 6-0 there.

I think you just about got the national team debate right, but for me it took until after France to lose interest as when I was younger I was such a huge Scotland fan & I couldn’t shake it. And to be fair nor did I want to. My dad was right on board with disliking the national side at a similar point to John, possibly even earlier & he now absolutely detests them though rather than just dislikes! And it’s 50/50 split between the SFA & TA that gives him those feelings! I still always want Scotland to do well, but hardly ever even switch the telly on if they’re playing. I reckon I can get on board with Gascoigne being the greatest debut season and Box Office is right- whatever mood he was in you couldn’t take your eyes off him and the place lit up when he got the ball. A genius.

Enjoyed the club and national team debate. I grew up with Rangers and Scotland strips and following both fervently but the first tournament where I felt some distance growing was France 98 after they won the league and the Scotland squad was dominated by their players. Walter taking on the national team with Ally and Burns hooked me back in but my interest flagged when he left. The moment I lost interest was after the games in Dublin after 3IAR. I ended up gravitating towards other Bears in the support because it became obvious our choice of club was unwelcome. I don’t want Scotland to lose but I don’t go out of my way to watch anymore. If the Scotland team was dominated by Rangers players then maybe I’d be interested more but I’m just not bothered. My late father, born in 1921, would find this division weird, he was passionate about both club and country, but I guess he grew up in a world that’s now long gone which is sad. Great pod, though, it’s a fascinating topic.

Interested in the discussion on Gough/ Scotland. Always found it bizarre that Bomber never got a cap - and as football was moving forward we had a manager who thought Tom Boyd was a better option at wing back than Davie Robertson.

I was worried about the cup final due to the performance at Tynecastle a few weeks before. Everything seemed to click in to place on the day and totally agree that this was one of our best performances in a final.I along with half of the Rangers end that day was wearing a big floppy hat with Gazza on it!!

David Taylor

I was early 20’s in this period, going to all the games and it was without a doubt the best period of supporting Rangers in my life, looking back now, I’m a bit sad I just took it all for granted and thought it would always be like that.

Paul Dunnachie

I remember discussing that at the time.. with a mixture of views from people. For me, all the money was being thrown at club football, the Champions League in particular - international football just seemed to by dying on its arse. I’d lost the interest in the Scottish national team by late 1992 so it felt a very natural progression for me. 30yrs later I’m not sure that I ever recovered much genuine interest in international football.

Gary Brown

Thanks very much as ever Martyn, with Andy & John, for this latest episode. Another cracker! Title eight was all about number eight and anyone from, or who knows, that time immediately recognises & understands exactly why you have chosen the title for this season's episodes - because it is absolutely perfect. For me vs Aberdeen & Hearts, is the 'exclamation mark' to the Dominant era - it is the zenith of individual & team performance, operating at maximum efficiency, style & steel. The culmination of everything envisaged by Mr Holmes & Souness in 1986 (albeit with a slightly different shaped cup in mind!). Perfection. Your very best is simply just not a match - We are Dominant! The peak, despite the achievement yet to come! And after reaching every peak the only way is down. I'm off to dig out the old end of season video. Thanks again guys.

In terms of the Scotland squad at Euro 96, when you look at the players who were not involved that could have been for a variety of reasons: Gough, McLaren, Davie Robertson, Paul Lambert (confused as to why he wasn’t in that squad considering he joined BVB that summer) Ian & Duncan Ferguson. Adding those players to guys like Goram, Hendry, Collins, McAllister, would it be fair to say that would have been the strongest Scottish squad of the 90s?? I think Brown really did cause some irreparable damage to the national team that we have never recovered from. Great stuff again guys, I remember watching that SCF in absolute amazement. It’s like this was a slight indication of how the next season was going to be dominated by Laudrup again after Gazzas turn. I know this might be something you will touch on in the next episode, but how disappointed were the fans that we didn’t follow up that summer with another “star” name after having Laudrup & Gazza the previous two?

Steven Nicol

This has been one of the best series on heart and hand.

Martyn Ramsay

Going out before 9/10? Don’t think there’s a chance he’d have seriously considered it.

Martyn Ramsay

I must admit to a sense of melancholy doing this series at this time. There’s never a perfect era - plenty of moans throughout this - but, Christ were we lucky.

Martyn Ramsay

96 probably was the peak strength of the 90s Scotland squad, yes. Easy groups to get to England and France. Yeah we will discuss that next week but, given what had gone the two summers before and the names we were linked with, it was bit flat.
