David and John are with Martyn this week to discuss the start of the season of destiny, the one campaign on which the entire decade hung. The boys discuss the Euros, the transfer frustration really coming to fruition, a perfect league start but debate the mess that was Zurich and Auxerre.

Been waiting since Souness first season for the dream team to be reunited.

Were there any rumours linking Gascoigne with a move away in the summer of 1996? I know the gap between us and the top of the Premier League, while growing, isn't massive at this point, but I'd have thought some of the top teams like Spurs who might have considered him too much of a gamble in 1995 might have looked at his successful domestic season combined with his Euro 96 performances and put in a bid.

My Wife’s one and only visit to Ibrox was the Alania match speaking to friends after the game they were not bothered by Europe just the league. Because I didn’t live in Scotland I found that quite strange but then I wasn’t living in the claustrophobic atmosphere 24/7. The return leg was at a funny time and I was at the dentist rushed out to the car to hear “ goal Alania , Rangers need to be careful now “ , shitting myself only for the commentary to say Alania 1 Rangers 3 🤣🤣 Big Jock was my first successful Rangers manager and the response to his death from Celtic was to be expected in those days, Andy Lynch was a very decent man. Got to the end and totally agree with John going into work on a Thursday living in England wasn’t much fun after being dicked by teams like Auxerre and Zurich . That’s really when I started falling out with Smiths tactics.

I remember I had started work in sports division and the other lots fans were convinced they were winning league. They genuinely believed they had a better team I remember several arguments that probably only di canio would get in the rangers team! In hindsight this was the turn in the media towards the club, Do you think if the club had challenged at this stage it would have had any impact?

Personally I think it was already in full flow. Perhaps if Murray had shown a bit more gumption early on in his tenure but now post Duncan . I think it’s open season

What an amazing start to the season it was, domestically at least. Went to the Gough testimonial (what is it about picking a former team’s biggest rival for your testimonial, a la McCoist v Newcastle?!) and I recall that being the one game where the atmosphere was just fun and confidence in the team was flowing. I think Arsenal had played Celtic midweek and drawn or won and Wright had praised them big time so he was booed relentlessly as well as Merson given some major stick about his addictions. Regardless, we swept them aside and Albertz looked sensational. Cue the competitive matches and it really did feel “close”. The relief of Gascoigne’s goal to kill the old firm game a real demonstration of that tension as you’re all correct, we should have killed the game off much earlier. That Hearts game remains the most farcical match I’ve ever been to; the crowd really was grumbling with the team throughout that second half and how often do you leave a game where they’ve won 3-0 and you’re in a mood that it wasn’t 7 or 8! Grasshopper Zurich was the worst performance of them all to me. Utterly woeful. To the point where I can’t believe people want to own the top they wore that night even if it is a one off. It’s a strange feeling pressing play on this- mixed emotions of this is such a brilliant series but now it really is getting close to the end!

I watched the last Old Firm game of the 95-96 season last week on YouTube, and the performance that struck out to me the most was that of Alan McLaren. Without Gough he was leading that backline & I think it’s the quietest game The Goalie had against them out of the 4, which I think says a lot. How much of a miss do you think he was moving forward? Am I right in saying he was seen as the future Rangers & Scotland captain? My first ever game was that game against Arsenal, Albertz shot smashing the bar my main memory!

I recall the SMSM line that “Celtic are a far better side who play much better football”. Throughout the NIAR era who ever was our closest challenger received this accolade- you just had to substitute the name - Aberdeen, Motherwell, Hearts, Dundee United or Celtic - depending on which season it was. Once NIAR was achieved many hacks sought to belittle the achievement , Gerry McNee in particular. But if Rangers had held off a far better team to win the title for 9 seasons on the bounce that must be some achievement, surely. Incredible mental gymnastics 🤷🏼‍♂️ Apropos our disappointing summer in terms of transfers, Murray got himself into a corner by proclaiming that Shearer was not available at any price but if he had been Murray would have assembled a financial package for a transfer. A day or two later Shearer joined Newcastle. I remember many an angry call to the Daily Record hotline. The Champions League campaign was so disappointing. Compared to the previous season we had qualified in far better fashion and the group looked much less daunting. Grasshoppers must be vying with AEK and Gothenburg for the absolute nadir of European performances in the 1990s.

That Alania game was my first ever game at 2 years old. McCoist broke the Scottish european goal scoring record that night I’m sure

Nothing concrete at all which is a little surprising in hindsight. Only been at Rangers a year though. Generally accepted to be settled.

Martyn Ramsay

If only there were a couple of books on the way where you could read more about it and have a permanent reminder of the series 😁

Martyn Ramsay

Yeah I think it’s a fairly important loss as Gough goes to America and returns creaking. Amo was obviously supposed to fill it but the common injury story played out again.

Callum Dinnen

Yeah I'm maybe viewing the scenario through 2022 eyes, where an English club would definitely sign him. I suppose the fee maybe has something to do with it, while the £4.3m we sign him for in 1995 isn't at the top end of what clubs are paying now, it's still a substantial sum of money; you'd imagine we'd want a bit of profit on any sale which takes any sale fee to around the £6-7m mark at least, which I think even by 1996 only Cole, Bergkamp, Collymore and Shearer have cost more than. And they're all strikers. Newcastle as a possible destination if Shearer takes the hard headed professional decision and moves to Man Utd is an interesting one.

Always enjoy my hour or so in Dominant-land. Thanks lads. UCL - out our depth then, out our depth now. At least now we have multiple, reasonable reasons why.

Remember ever time we broke up the park against Hearts we were offside due to having so few of their players on the park in the emd. Had a weird vibe. Didn't stenhousmuir have 4 sent off a couple of years before that made the back pages?
