That fabled ninth title in a row may have been lifted in the spring but it was won over this winter. John and Andy join Martyn to revisit an excellent run of form that showed brilliance and resilience in equal measure. The Hammer, conspiracies, anxiety, Rozental's knee and the millions from Joe Lewis are all on the agenda.

I remember watching the New Year game on TV (wasn't allowed to attend Old Firm games until 1997/98) and just shouting for Albertz to smash the free kick off Jackie MacNamara.

Kerr's "thumbs up" to his wall suggesting that everything is just hunky dory before Jorg unleashes it makes the entire thing perfect. It's my favourite OF game. Had everything needed for the best kind of win against them.

Callum Dinnen

Was it on New Year's Day? I'm sure we had family round that evening watching it in the back room going mad. Smith's sprint down the touchline is my main memory other than Albertz's goal.

Funny that McNee chucked the open line due to the type of people slavering on it when the entire premise is based on getting people to have an argument due to the hosts taking a contrary position to generate a debate. Both himself and the co-creators are responsible for the exact sort of stuff he's moaning at. It was bad enough back then but I cannot understand why anyone, to this day, gives it a minutes attention. Even in the 90s, the callers to Radio 5 on 606, were a World apart from the absolute morons phoning in to Clyde. The sort of people you'd walk away from in the pub as soon as the started speaking. "They're gettin' help, Shugh. They're gettin' help fae the refereeeeees"

Martyn Ramsay

It did have a certain charm to it in its earlier days and it was absolutely a must-listen on the way home but around here is definitely the descent. McNee’s biggest issue re trolling/whipping up idiocy was his column. Being so different to the commentator, a clear piece of disingenuous schtick

1997 and Murray is talking about building a hotel. Wonder what happened to that idea. Along with the casino and museum ideas. Shows be was a windbag then and ever since. He would say anything to keep us happy and distracted. Even when we had 9 in a row to keep us occupied. And if course 10. Unfortunately that idea went the same way

There are two calls I remember clear as day from the early to mid 90s; after the 4-2 mauling at parkhead a Tim rang and when asked if he was there said “I never get the opporchancity to go” & after a sore loss at home in the Champions League when Derek Johnstone questioned the credentials of a fan who responded “True Rangers fan?? Ah walk on the 12th every year”!

The New Year game for me was the ultimate epitome of this Rangers side. I remember driving to the game and news coming in about the players who were definitely out and subsequently thinking how difficult it was going to be. However they really did have that knack of proving everyone wrong with that dogged, determined performance and a much deserved win. And memorable for the Jorge Cadete song being belted out with much gusto- he’s Portuguese, and he’s one of these (wanker sign en masse)!!

I’m gonna bust a myth right now. I’ve spoken to Gordon Mcbride many times about this (he’s a close friend of my dads), he maintains to this day that when he looked across the line he saw cadete in an off side position. He gave offside, not hand ball.

Gavin Currie

Aye horrendous decision 😂

Gordon Smith

Around this time I remember hearing a call. “Why don’t McCann spend the money to get Erinco Annoni early and we will make up the money in the champions league”. It was the funniest since the “we should take the 9 million for Collins” circa 95.

Callum Dinnen

Petric is so far behind the defensive line that it's almost fair enough that the linesman has flagged. I've never understood the manufactured outrage over the Cadete 'goal'; he handles the ball in the act of bringing the ball down so regardless of whether the linesman offside call was correct or not, disallowing the goal was the correct decision.

Stephen

One of the best shows on the network.

Was there not a graphic in the Rangers News at the time that illustrated that the £40m was earmarked for 4 specific things that would cost £10m each?

Martyn Ramsay

Most probably and it would likely change the next week. Murray was fairly clear at the EGM tbf

Callum Dinnen

It's a shame the Advocaat years are out of scope for this project because how we get from February 1997 to summer 2003 financially is astonishing looking back on it.

Gary Brown

Thanks as ever for this truly magnificent series Martyn. Superbly assisted by John & Andy

I have previously searched for as much footage as I can of Seb Rozental (pre signing) to try and form an idea of the player that we would have been getting. From what I can discern, he was similar to Alfredo in that he was a bustly thrives-in-chaos type of forward. Not particularly silky but would have been a serious pain in the arse to opposing defenders. I do think that, for the time, we overpaid for him tbh.
