Martyn, David and Alan take us through the tense weeks of March 1997 as the quest for Nine reached its climax. The boys discuss the calls for Smith to be sacked, the Parkhead double header, Hateley's return, the stumble to the line, tears at Tannadice and re-assess what nine-in-a-row was really all about.

“God I miss him” You got me there David 🥲

Am I the only person who wishes they let Kerr try and get to big Mark?! 😂

Dundee Utd game was the night before my "final" university exam. Missed all the celebrations.

Tom McDavid

Sat myself in the George Fox Stand. Sitting on my hands trying to look Dundonian😇

I'll preface this comment by saying how much I loved this era. I cried at the official club video put out when Walter died because it's just happy childhood memory after happy childhood memory. However, the big failure of this era is that it left no positive legacy. We have a ridiculous balance sheet in February 1997 and by May 1997 we've won 9 in a row. Yet in the 25 years since, we've won just 8 titles compared to 17 over the city.

That Motherwell game at home should of been an Iconic day in our history.Walking up PRW that day pre match there was a carnival feel to it.David was correct about a very flat atmosphere inside the ground.A very good show gents.

Snap in the George Fox stand that night as well.had to practically put my fist in my mouth to stop myself cheering when the goal went in.i turned round and across the aisle from me this fellow bear just smiled and winked at me.when the final whistle went i jumped up and roared and discovered loads of bears were in the George Fox stand.

Indeed. Hopefully we’ve captured this tension throughout the last few seasons well enough. Lots of glory in that second half of the period but there was always a fair degree of angst and discomfort too. What did all this actually mean? Whereas the same level of trophy-gathering in the first six years isn’t anywhere near as conflicted. Its full systems go, the sky is the limit, who dares wins Rodney. But that is where obsession of any kind becomes a problem I guess.

Callum Dinnen

It's been captured perfectly to the point that the last 4 episodes, as good as they've been, haven't really been enjoyable as far as subject matter goes - and that's 4 episodes on the 9 in a row season! Your splitting up of the eras is an interesting choice because I think it's still hard to split 91/92 and 92/93, and I'd count myself as being even luckier than you guys who are a wee bit older than me because I really came of age as a Rangers fan in 1992, and I think there's a case that as a calendar year, that's the best year we've ever had in the modern era.

Was the Stewart Kerr handball not the May 99 game,David?

Gary Shaw

No apology necessary mate, just my Rangers OCD taking over🤣….great show again by the way and the commentary and crowd roar that is used when talking about the OF game gets me every time 😀

Kev Armstrong

Anyone else go back and watch the highlights of these games? Dundee Utd game was a shambles

Alan Bradley

Absolutely, Utd goals pretty straightforward, decent finishes but we were all over the place.

Talking about the relief after the 9 was done, and after the initial roar it was like letting out a massive sigh. I can only imagine it being somewhat similar to 55. Obviously it was the other side of the coin, but I remember celebrating when we beat St.Mirren, then when Celtic drew against Dundee Utd; I did let out a massive roar but about 10-15mins later I was fighting back tears. Cause it was the end of this long suffering journey. Granted 9 in a row had so many highs along the way, the final victory must have felt like a great relief. I was only 3 years old, and had been taken to my first couple of games by this point. But I obviously have no real memory of the 9

96-97 was a strange affair with just trying to keep a lid on it for 9 months until that night in May at Tannadice. As for Walter I thought at the time he should have left after 9 with his legacy intact. That summer of 97 should have been a clear the decks summer with a new manager and players in as Europe was the new focus and one that got lost in the mix of chasing 9. We would have still got the ten no probs but as we found out it was not to be.

Lynsey Roddy

I was there at Tannadice that night & it was a sea of blue & white in all corners so much so the police & stewards gave up telling us we were in the home support section. Gazza singing out of the dressing room window & spraying champagne to the hundreds gathered outside was brilliant. A night I’ll never forget. Still have my ticket with the wrong date as it was moved.

Can we do a series about then the hate for rangers started and how and who fan the flames ?, I feel we were hated for wanting to drag Scottish football out the dark ages

michael Cochrane

I was at Ibrox for Motherwell game had travelled from Orkney to scrabster and then to aberdeen to meet Bro and what I expected to be a win and lift the title. Oh how that went wrong and then tried like mad to get tickets for Tannadice and even had a Sheep fan who had connections with Rangers supporters clubs try but nothing instead listened on the radio before headed back north ! I was gutted to have missed it

Paul Dunnachie

Part of the way through.. just at the league game at Parkhead. I honestly believe that we won that game when Mark Hateley was striding through Glasgow Airport - it was like something out of a movie. They were spooked on the field & off it, while we were invigorated on the field & off it. It was a signing of utter genius for one match that meant everything. The tension in the buildup though - all fed by the media was ridiculous. I’m sure they lifted the Judgment Night tag that was being used for a big boxing match at the time and it felt like the city was on edge in the days up to the game. Didn’t the Rosevale come under attack with someone trying to set fire to it during that evening/night? That’s the tipping point we were at.

Rob Shorthouse

I think the 'we wanted ten, but needed nine' point is absolutely perfectly made. I'd have been utterly devastated had we not gotten nine, but I recovered pretty quickly after the failures of the following season. Perhaps knowing that it was a proper reset in 98 helped, but nine always felt way more important than ten, weirdly.

That Motherwell game is the only one I remember my mum going to. Me my dad, my mum and my two sisters all travelled over from Northern Ireland for it. My dad's friend was a bus driver at the time and brought us loads of rolls of tickets to use as streamers. Then the match happened. The biggest anti climax of a match I've ever been at

Gary Brown

Thanks again Martyn for this wonderful episode, ably aided by David & Alan. The Nine ! 😊

Just catching up with this, what a show, well done, amazing memories... Really looking forward to hearing your views on the next seasons mess for some odd reason. Still to this day not sure how we managed to blow it so bad and lose to such a poor team from the east. Amazing insight guys thanks again.
