David and Alan answer a late call to join Martyn this week where there are a few sporting mirages to work through. Gascoigne's encore for club and country, the continuation of an undefeated run against Celtic and an excellent win before Christmas were just a few reasons why fans believed that Rangers had finally turned a corner. Red cards given and not given would prove more decisive as well the huge announcement that a historic era was coming to an end.

Giving a tax free lump sum as a reward for failure to an already rich man with an impressive property and business portfolio would only happen in football.

Watching that 1-1 game back, we looked miles ahead of them at that stage. Also interesting to see Walter went with the same 3 in midfield (Thern, Gazza, Albertz) that got run over in Gothenburg. Totally agree with the comments re their goal feeling like a defeat. Funny that we felt that way from that game, yet the 1-1 draw at Ibrox two seasons previously which was basically a carbon copy at a such a pivotal point in the season, did not. I wonder if there was just such an overwhelming feeling of impending doom about 97-98 that we just couldn’t shake.

25 years on the failure to do 10 still rankles. Despite the mountain of mistakes and misfortunes we only missed out narrowly. It would have been easier to take if we had finished miles behind a really good Celtic side eg peak Martin O’Neill or Rodgers’ invincibles. Interesting point re Gascoigne. I had thought that Gazza had been on a downward trajectory since we made it 8 in a row. Martyn pointed out his sweet spot in autumn 1997. This makes Rowbotham’s vindictive red card at Breezeblock all the more significant. The lengthy suspension which followed pretty much finished Gascoigne at Rangers. Had he been available in the following weeks we might have done better than the dismal draws at Fir Park and East End Park. The failure to dismiss Stubbs has always rankled. That night was the defining moment. The Walter situation was the worst of all worlds. I read in the Rangers Monthly magazine in 1998 that Walter offered his resignation in summer 1997 but Murray persuaded him to stay to set a new record. I know Walter went off grid for a while after the binfire in Gothenburg, which would hint that he was considering his future. The season was a massive disappointment, and what hurts all the more was that the wound was largely self-inflicted.

The point about late goals is a valid one but we gave away 4 points to late equalisers in the league games against them at Ibrox in 1995/96.

Talking over transfers and squad size, I think it’s mental the likes of McInnes, Bollan, Wright etc are still knocking about in 1998 taking wages to never even get a sniff of game time

As covered in the last pod there was so many marginal things that if they went differently we win the league. But we don't do excuses and nobody was or is looking for them, ulimately we were a shambles. Last week we mentioned the papers drawing up 3 teams we could have. Look at the squad we failed to win a league with. Shambolic. Goram, Niemi, Snelders Stensass, Porrini, Cleland, Vidmar, Amoruso, McLaren, Petric, Bjorklund, Moore, Bollan, Shields, Wilson, S.Wright Gazza, I.Ferguson, McInnes, I.Ferguson, McCall, Gattuso, Albertz, C.Miller, B.Ferguson, Durrant, Thern Van Vossen, Laudrup, Rozental, McCoist, Negri, Durie, JJ Injuries (not all bad luck, bad fitness, discipline and form just pissed away everything.

Brilliant show again lads although some painful memories brought back from that night. I remember leaving the game livid that night with Wieghorst’s(sp) play acting and Rowbothams display. However I cannot get over Alan Bradley swearing during the pod. 😳

What happens with Barry Ferguson in an alternate universe where we sign Lambert in October 1997 is an interesting one. While we have a lot of midfield options at the time, a lot of them are coming to the end of their time at Rangers. Advocaat still has to invest £5.5m on Gio, and rely on Ian Ferguson and Charlie Miller to play 26 and 21 games respectively in 98/99, and still goes out and buys Reyna in March 1999, so there would definitely have been room for him particularly given Barry's injury in the latter part of that season.

Thanks again Martyn, Alan & David. Superb episode as usual in this immense series. 👍👏

Alan Bradley

Ashamed of my uncharacteristic outburst Johnnie 😞. Would never be as eloquent as Davie with Murray and Me, but am confident if I could have a pod on my views of Murray now, there might be lots more swearing to follow.

Scott Niven

Alan swearing threw me off a bit whilst talking about Murray🤣 need more of that Alan!

Douglas Innes

Alan should definitely do a pod about Murray , when the fans started turning on Murray my boss at the time was livid and couldn't see the woods for the trees he often quoted " Rangers fans will never ever be able to repay Murray for what he did for Rangers " ..... aye really said that and believed it

Laura McCrimmon

Another cracking episode, but Alan cursing was definitely my highlight, but I couldn't have agreed more with his statement 🤣

Alan Bradley

Probably Craig’s influence from earlier conversations we had on WAY & SSS 😂

Mark

This episode stirs-up fading embers of that thrashing of Dunfermline, with the refrain of 'Gazza must stay' washing around the stands as he rampaged all over the top of the visiting team. He would stay, surely, as we would surely go on to title glory the following spring...

Gordon Smith

The cover of Follow Follow at the time said “ end of an error” it sold well and very few fans disagreed. Time and Smith’s second spell has lead to some revisionism, those of us who were there remember real anger and resentment. We were then asked to shell out for a testimonial which was just plain insulting. Not only did we suffer the indignity of this season we paid the severance.

Think the chronological timeline works with the theme here. Plenty of false dawns, but all I know is that whilst acknowledging lots of other incidents Stubbs’s last gasp equaliser was the one that stands out most. I couldn’t agree more that Celtic wouldn’t have mentally recovered. It absolutely felt like a defeat & I am surprised at that sun headline the following day as a friend of mine was in the home end and said it felt like a win for them. Momentum can take you far places, but even with that they were frail enough that it still took us handing them it on a plate in the end, and I don’t think it’s wild to think even had they still won the new year game after that we would have gone on to the title. I must admit I’d forgotten about Gascoigne’s mini renaissance as my memory tells me he was rotten for the entire season and I fully agreed that he should go. And, yes, adding to the shock of other comments, I nearly crashed the car at Mr Bradley dropping the F bomb & not even as a verb or a noun 😳

Gregg

Maybe we could have just played young Barry that season. He couldn’t have improved so drastically in 6-9 months that he was a mainstay under advocaat

Paul Dunnachie

It was a season too far for too many - culmination of long seasons, injuries, lifestyle, coaching & something of a comfort zone that all took their toll. The most frustrating of seasons - so many sloppy goals & points dropped. Draws ultimately killed us - 25% of the matches.. and far too many goals conceded. All those false dawns… looking like we were about to get into form but then some unlikely mishap would follow. If winning leagues is about building momentum then that’s exactly what escaped us in the autumn of 1997 - the muscle memory failed.

Michael Gray

I think Barry was 19 that season. 20 in Feb. So Dereks assertion his brother was too young I don’t think stands up
