I think you have to look at overall transfer strategy when it comes to Tillman. We spent about 12million on Yilmaz, Davies and Matondo. Dearie me. We need big figures to be really contributing. I really like Tillman amd at 5mil it isn't at all unreasonable. But what is the rest of the plan, if Tillman is the bulk of overall spending then perhaps not. And we can't be in a position to see him walk away for free at the end of his contract (as we are in that position with Kent and Morelos) and say at least we have memories. Good point on what we got with Aribo compared to Tillman fee but absolutely got short changed on Aribo. When you compare our dealings in and out with them it is quite desperate. They get good value often and get good fees for what they sell often and don't see star players walk away for nothing. No idea why sections of our support seem to think we are so exceptional we can never expect the same.

Boy from the Belgian podcast on the European hangover said it’s Rask-in - we need to know. Alfredo Morales playing well

Russ

Lads I don't know if it's a rogue shout but would you rotate Kent and Cantwell for County and the forseeable rather than Sakala and Cantwell? I'd say we're a lot more potent and just shoot more with Morelos and Sakala on the pitch. Not sure why Kent is untouchable. Good listen.

The Tillman thing seems a no brainer … but the ‘buy back’ clause worries me. Does it set a limit on how much we can sell him for? Do BM get to buy him back at 10m or whatever it is or is this clause setting a minimum price and open to the market as a whole?

Alan Ryder

Tillman is a no-brainer for me. Younger and already seems to be looking more consistent than Aribo in terms of goal involvements. If we were disappointed at losing Aribo for £6m then Tillman is a steal at £5m. Don't f*** it up Rangers! lol

Scott Watson

I've no idea but I'd speculate it's just the price for Bayern because I'd also assume if we activate our buy option, there will be a sell-on clause and in that case, it's in their best interests for us to get as high a fee as possible The buy back is presumably primarily there to protect their interests in case he kicks on so much that they want him back, or think his value has risen sufficientlythat they could sell him for a tidy profit even after losing ~5m to us

Russ

Aye fair question to be fair, probably a bit harsh but I think Tillman, Kent and Cantwell supporting Morelos is a bit too 'fluffy' if you know what I mean, early days though.

Mark

Sell Kamara in the summer in order to finance Tillman, would be my incredibly simplistic take on that situation.

Adam

It usually has an agreed upon fee between both clubs that's of a value greater than the fee we would have paid for Tillman to begin with. It's not like Bayern can come back in with a £2 million pound bid and we would be forced into to accepting it. I doubt the club would agree to a deal that wasn't at least double the value we initially paid for him, otherwise buying him would be pointless. Say the fee is 15 million, then we can't lose on the deal really. We'd still be doubling our money on him effectively. It's worth bearing in mind, Bayern could probably sell Tillman this summer for more than £5 million on the open market, so that's why they've add the buy back clause. If we'd refused the buy back clause, they'd have likely with drawn the exclusive agreement to sign him for a set fee this summer. It does impact our ability to get full market value. For example, say Arsenal came in with an £20 million bid for Tillman, Bayern would likely exercise their clause and we'd be bumped out of whatever the difference is in the fee. That's the frustrating thing but we'd still turn a profit. It's less frustrating than the situation we found ourselves in with Aribo though.

Ok thx for that Adam. Its an interesting model in terms of risk ‘sharing’ … we benefit from having the chance to get a player we probably couldnt otherwise afford … at least for a while, but carry the risk of the player not working out, while BM carry no risk - if he gets injured or otherwise fails, Rangers have paid his wages, if he succeeds, they get him back for potentially massively under market value. It is interesting that we seem to have chosen a similar risk vehicle in the Charlie McCann deal … football is no longer really about kickin a wee baw aboot a field, is it? :-)

I would give Jack an extension. We will rotate the squad throughout next season. It’ll help manage his minutes and we will get 20-25 quality games from him. In my eyes he’s better than Lundstrum. We also need to keep Scottish trained players for our Euro squad. There’s not a huge amount of top quality Scottish players available to buy.

David Innes

Agree. Definitely room for Jack in the squad next season given that Davis, Arfield, Sands and possibly Kamara will be gone

It struck me that 6 years ago tomorrow we hosted Ross County at Ibrox, an insipid 1-1 draw which turned out to be Mark Warburton’s final game and the season that lot had their Invincibles season. I feared at the time that we would be mired in that sort of mediocrity for ever. For all the disappointments of the last few years we have seen a title triumph, a Scottish Cup, 3 seasons of European football after Christmas, a Europa League final, Champions League involvement, a £20m plus player sale, a youth product sold to an EPL team for £12m plus, record turnover and a return to profitability. Whilst we grumble about recent events, the positives I have just listed seemed beyond our wildest dreams this weekend 6 years ago.

Great point and a potential league and Scottish cup double this season aswell

Would we expect the buy back to have an expiration date inside the typical contract length or hang like a sword of Damocles the whole time he's with us? Adam's point that we can't lose is the key one here. If we buy him in the summer and Bayern come in straight away, we've got a great season out of him (or we wouldn't be buying) and made (say) 5-10M profit in one season that we can (partially) reinvest. If we buy him in the summer and he's with us one season and kicks on another level and Bayern buy him back (if the clause doesn't expire) then we've had two great seasons (or they wouldn't be buying him back) out of him and made 5-10M profit that we can (partially) reinvest Voltaire famously said "The best is the enemy of the good" and that applies here. I think Adam (sorry, are you THE Adam? 😄) has made the point a few times recently that not every deal has to be a £20m profit to be great business. We made that on Bassey, but we only really got half a season out of him at a really high level. If Tillman is here two seasons, I am certain we will say he contributed more on the park - and I think we should expect that to be how it works on average. You will make the biggest profits on the long shots because they are the bigger risks and cost less to acquire to start with, but you will also have more failures with them because they are the biggest risks. As with most things in life, having a balance of different types of project is the best approach

These are all excellent points I fully expect to get slaughtered for this, but New Edmiston House is also a bit of a milestone and a symbol of the progress the club is making. The fact that the decision makers of the club are firstly thinking about long term capital investments and secondly able to finance it without debt, shows that we are being run in a way that is focused on our long term health. When was the last time we made major investment on this scale? The training centre? But we all know the general financial quicksand that we were operating on when we did that I very much hope we can say the same thing about the proposed changes to improve facilities for disabled supporters in the next few years You can also consider the investment in the women's team and the B Team/Academy overall as other indicators of a club that is taking things seriously - and obviously not getting everything right, but I think getting a lot more right than wrong I made this point on Twitter and, predictably, got panned but to conclude that we are "going backwards" based on the results we've had (pre-Beale anyway) this season and ignore the mountain of evidence about all the ways we are making strides is a wee bit short-sighted to me

chris smith

This crux of the issue (and we are working in an info-lite environment in terms of numbers) is that if the potential profit is capped at a low level - from a business pov - 5m is a large outlay. Ofc that can be balanced by the fact that Tillman is likely to be an excellent player for us.

Scott Watson

Excellent pod, thank you gentlemen Although you didn't hit an hour, can't remember the last time that happened 😀 Loving that pun on point 5, I imagine Steven is going to get a lot of mileage out of that over the next few seasons Rotation question is really interesting. We've had so many injuries for so long that we haven't really had to deal with the challenge of having such a big squad and no post-Christmas European fixtures to fit in for the first time in four seasons. I think everything will be done with one eye on getting the best possible team on the park for the league cup final over the next few weeks so I wouldn't expect an awful lot. Silverware is clearly important in its own right but we're obsessed with narratives in sport and winning that would fuel a "tide has turned" narrative which may or may not be nonsense but would give Beale breathing room to work on what he wants to put in place It would be nice to think we'll continue playing exactly the way we did at Tynecastle but I think that's a little bit unrealistic, can't see County shaping up anything like the way Hearts did but I also don't think they should be causing us too many problems. 3-0 Rangers

David Kiltie

Thank you, Scott. I agree with you about NEH. For years fans have complained about the lack of matchday amenities - this has finally been addressed. Also the absence of a club museum has been seen as a gaping hole in the club's infrastructure, in the same way the absence of a training facility was prior to Auchenhowie's opening. At last this is being resolved. As Andy McGowan has pointed out, in order to comply with FFP/Financial Stability Rules we need more ongoing revenue streams. NEH is a step forward in this respect. TV money for Scottish clubs is always going to be a pittance. The next major imperative is to improve the disabled facilities. If that means we can't sign a player then so be it. Our club's nightmare period was largely down to recklessness and short-sightedness. Glad that, whatever criticisms can be levelled against the current board, we have left the Murray era behind.

I regards Ross Countys goal Vs Hibs I thought David Marshalls starting position was poor for his attempted jump ( as it was a standing jump) and all the players around him was up before he was ...... but it couldve went either way
