Why are we so obsessed with the role of the football manager? What has changed in the job and do we need to change with it? Do we give it too much importance? Martyn is joined by Adam and The Guardian's Rob Smyth to discuss the most high profile position in football.

Would be good to have something similar on the role of captain - something that our support seems to fetishise

That could end up in a full discussion about how leadership and shouting a bit aren't the same thing. Or how an armband gives mystical powers.

Think it’d be an interesting topic - how it has always differed abroad from the UK and how it’s now evolved in the EPL now too - no more Keane, Adams etc. Is the alpha male dead in football or have they evolved - anyways I’m away to put some aloe vera on my sunburn before my massage 😂

Would Rinus Michels have been a or the iconic manager post war?

Interesting pod, thanks guys. Simply the evolution of the game from being the manager of all aspects of the actual club through to now where, in the main, it is 'managing', more accurately coaching the first team/squad players to negotiate matches until fans (or players) get bored and start bleating. Every story needs a hero and a villain - the modern manager is a hero until the first voices of dissent, then its just a matter of time. The short termism mentality (press reset on the console game) and disposable society of today means there will be extremely few managers who can ever actually build one team nevermind a legacy.

Hahaha. That line about the Italian manager Pozzo and "other people with positions of more power in Italry in the 1930s" got a huge laugh from me. Worthy of a line in Succession that sort of thing. Thougth Adam maybe did Jock Wallace a massive disservice when he jumped from Struth to Souness in terms of managers who had a huge presence and worked in an innovative manner when speaking about Rangers.
