Oh Gawd, don't know if I can handle big Andy telling us how great everything is

Alan Cowan

Who drops out of the next starting 11 and who comes in? Ridvan for Barasic Souttar for Davies Lowry for Lundstram Matondo for Kent Lovelace/Ure for Morelos Hagi for Tillman

Mren90

It's time to give the younger players a chance. Beale and his staff need to separate the wheat from the chaff, who's worth keeping and who's going. I would like to see what McCrorie can offer us. Surely with nothing to play for it's worth having a look at the boy for the remainder of the season, give him the game time to see if he's got what it takes

Rod

Disagree with Ross about getting value for money for Kent over his entire time at Rangers. He's our biggest ever net spend on any player in our entire history and what we have had in return isn't close to being good enough.

Fergie

Good to listen to a sensible and reasoned discussion about where we are at after all the hysteria on forums and social media.

Gregg McKee

We ain’t challenging them, or anywhere near it, with free transfers from the English Championship I’m afraid

Alan Cowan

I would push Tavernier further up the park as his defending has got worse to the point of being a liability But Devine at RB is a call, McCrorrie in goal is a must, please don't have McGregor or McLaughlin between the posts FFS.

Graeme Glennie

The fans will have belief when they give us something to believe in. We've given these players everything in terms of support and had very little domestically in return.

Ross Hutton

Yeah that's fair, I'm probably basing a lot of the "return" aspect on many of the nights he gave us in Europe last season. But in terms of sheer output, especially goals, we should absolutely have been getting more value for the price we paid.

Billy Forrester

The soothing tones of the sage of salcoats, a man to roll out when we are all feeling shite after yesterday. How I love yer optimism Andrew

Peter Hosie

If they win that SC we are only 1 honour ahead of them and to me that’s damming of our board

James McConnachie

They’ll overtake us with ease. That’s the advantage 2012 gave them. Absolute lack of strategic vision.

James McConnachie

Our recruitment has been dog poo for years. This is what you get. Adam Devine must wonder what’s going on. We’ve consistently missed out on good Scottish talent. Keep hearing that Shankland isn’t Rangers class. Wondering where all these great strikers we’ve had over the last 5 years have been!

Rona Bluebell

The stars will align. We will come back quickly. Why? Cause we’re Rangers and the gap isn’t that big.

Alastair McGeoch

Great pod again. The chat about tactics is interesting in that the system Gerrard and Beale initially put together was totally reliant on a firing Morelos and we have been reliant on him ever since. Beale must make sure the summer rebuild does not hinge on a single player to make the whole thing tick.

Callum Dinnen

The chat I hear constantly about wanting an experienced manager is so fucking brain dead. Our last manager was by miles Feyenoord's most successful manager of the 21st century and had loads of experience in the Dutch league, he wasn't good enough. Souness, Smith and Gerrard had no managerial experience before taking us on.

David Baillie

Beale can go a long way to getting the support onside by not having Kent and Morelos anywhere near the first team squad for the rest of the season. They are done at our club.

Euan Dover

I don’t really think he’s shown enough to breed much confidence that he’s the man to rebuild and then lead the team from there. Beale has largely failed on all targets that many of us converged on when he came in the door (win both cups and close the gap in the league - none of that’s happened). The team look pretty drab almost every week. Had he come in and lit a rocket under their arse and got us playing some positive football, then I’d have some optimism and forgive the failed targets. I get the team needs rebuilt but quality managers can get a tune out of a squad that looks on its knees, it happens all the time. This has not happened here and we’re really just hoping it all clicks in a lucky accident.

Andy McGowan

I think judging Beale on this squad is really unfair and whilst I do agree his targets were to win both cups, the issue is that Celtic stood in the way of both and this squad are just not at their current level and a manager can only do so much. He has taken us closer to them in one to one games there is no denying that.

Paul Kerr

With all the changes on and off the pitch, let's hope there is clarity of vision. Celtic won't roll over, the previous incumbants who rested on their laurels in the summer of '21 found that out. We need to get the level of the first team up quickly, I'd like to see our resources go into less players of a much higher quality. Not sure how feasible that is given the sheer turnover. We'd need to get out of the 'if we can get him fit' mindset that seems to permeate every transfer window. They have to come in ready to play.

Douglas Innes

Small comment if we'd space within our squad for Steven Davis the last 3 years and if a deal can be reached I wouldnt be against Arfield getting a year as a squad player

Roderick Boyle

The manager shouldn’t hang his dirty washing out in public , that’s basic .

Roderick Boyle

Sakala , will he ever be a striker ? A pre season with one Mr McCoist as a strikers coach , radical or common sense after all , that chap was none too bad at scoring

Roderick Boyle

I think I could be swayed to keeping Arfield on as a squad player , certainly no longer a 90 min player any more but maybe could be a good impact player coming off the bench in the second half ?

Stephen

I agree with you on Scottish talent although I don’t think Shankland would be worth what Hearts would want for him. Not sure there is anyone in Scottish football worth having right now but I think we will regret not trying to get at the likes of Lewis Ferguson, Josh Doig and Porteous.

James McConnachie

Yeah, but we could have picked Shanks up for 500k last season. Would that not have been worth a punt? Nisbet even?

Heart and Hand

Did they play entertaining football the year before either? Maybe after two managers it might be the players.

Tom

Circumspect, that’s the word of the Flagship for this week!😂

CJT

Thank you gents. Very difficult one. Afraid I am one of the 'the people' who clearly to you guys are overreacting. Would have thought myself one of the more considered in recent years. Andy was my solace earlier in the season as he also kept his head when the world was falling in to some. Howevet I've been supporting Rangers since the early 80s. I've seen at lot worse than this (and a lot better thankfully). I think I'm allowed to interprete what ive learned from that in my own way when looking to the future. For now i worry about handing a rookie manager the responsibility of a major overhall. Surprsed so many others aren't to be honest. It is a massive risk. Aye well canwell and Raskin have been good isn't enough for me I'm afraid. I have to say for all of this season basically I've been swimming against the tide with the general direction of my fellow fans. Therefore, open to it being me who's got it wrong. Probably because i'm from the school that the empty can rattles the most and there is no doubt in my mind he thought he was going back to 55 season with these players when he first arrived. They've let him down as they did his predecessor. Ill be honest i find Beale's all too frequent public utterances very frustrating. Also, while accepting we look better organised of late, the unwillingness to cast off the likes of Kent or Morelos until now really pisses me off. Did anyone think they were going to be the answer on Sunday? I really do get you can't tell them all they're shite and you need to patter some of the delicate souls up to retain some semblance of team selection coherance but you don't have to keep playing empty jerseys every week. The LCF should've been the finnal straw for some. That it wasn't makes me question his judgement to deliver the right result from the task ahead. Anyway I sincerely hope I'm wrong. End with what you said 'let's hope Rangers get it right' . Wish for me it was something more than hope. My fellow supporters seem to have confidence. Not there yet. As you also said a more circumspect manager who uses these 5 games to show us he's willing to make big decisions with an eye to the future not the past will certainly help.

Roderick Boyle

That wasn’t the point , John Grieg wasn’t good at managing either if your looking to compare former players in their managing careers at Rangers , it’s about trying to pass on skills just as the journeyman does with the apprentice .

Keith Murray

He is deserving of having the summer to rebuild and a full pre-season, he did inherit a broken squad, unfortunately - we will then see where we are next season. If we see similar next season then he will be under a lot of pressure.

Spoon

History won’t factor in the intangibles some people used to defend him for seasons, it will however show via his stats a guy who didn’t produce bar the odd match and failed to live up to expectation consistently. It seems to be an accepted truth he was universally loved when the reality is like lots of our squad he split opinion. I tried clumsily making this point before we have a squad of players some fans love and some loathe, some have been good but aren’t consistently enough to be relied on. Some are magic one week and murder the next. Even the regulars like Tav have no consensus around what they bring or even if they should be in the team. We are lacking guys who do their talking with their output, consistency and effort. We should have a solid 7 or 8 who play week in week out on merit and we just don’t even if they aren’t top tier super stars, other teams get a tune out of people with less pedigree or hype than our squad it’s not impossible.

Spoon

100%. I don’t believe he’s the messiah but I want to support him and acknowledge when he does well. The issue is he is also shooting himself in the foot a lot with selections, misplaced loyalty and some daft quips. I don’t want him sacked by any means but I want to see him being realistic and adaptable and not stoic and stubborn or as it seems some times oblivious. He can’t slate the players or team but by the same token he has to show the fans he is willing to make change especially with his chosen few.

maccalsa

And this is market we will be trading in. We will end up in the same position this time next year with a brand new manager

maccalsa

Also relied on 2 exceptional attacking fullbacks, and this coincided with a sweet spot in tav and barisic's careers

Greg

Let's talk about sakala...by then going back to talking about Morelos.

Greg

Also this "who gives a fuck about the last 5 games"and especially the last game against Celtic, are you guys for real? Michael Beale CANNOT afford another defeat.

Alastair McGeoch

True, and it’s clear Postecoglues Celtic are targeting the full backs and it’s working for them. Beale will need to figure out how to address that as well.

Graham Jones

I hope Andy’s optimism is well founded this summer. And, to be honest, I think it will be a better summer for us. I can actually see Bisgrove being able to increase our revenue as CEO. He has a high reputation from his period at UEFA, and I think it will help the club to have him elevated to the position of CEO. He’s an incredibly ambitious person and he’ll want to do a job here that only further enhances that reputation. What we need to see is the execution of a strategy that shows us that the direction of travel is true. I guess we’ll see by their actions.

Andrew Sewnauth

Look I know we are trying to be positive and not put the boot in on players but this argument “For the service he has given us”, Kent has been present during a period of 2 trophies out of 15 I believe, how can that be considered successful for a club like ours. I understand perspective trust me I do BUT we paid 7 million for Kent and that is a massive amount for us for a guy I don’t believe we have got value for based on his numbers, maybe I’ve never forgiven him for Seville but how many times has he kicked his arse this season? How many goals and assists has he got for us over the 5 years? For me his productivity is dreadful and you can tell me he gives the pass before the assist but for a winger these stats are damning. Also we talk about the hand that Beale is dealt but he is partly responsible for that too after his previous time at the club. Appreciate he wasn’t the end decision maker but he was involved in recruitment previously and then has held onto those beliefs around players like Kamara who should have been sold in January. I for one do not want to see Morelos, Kent, Roofe, Wright, Kamara, possibly Barisic play for us again and some players have 5 games that will make or break their Rangers career Matondo, Davies, Yilmaz, Hagi, Tillman, Sakala, possibly Arfield…. Beale, I’m not going to give him a hard time over what he says at press conferences but I agree he needs to say less. Get better at politicking! The League Cup final performance makes me nervous over him but let’s hope the squad rebuild will get him the type of players he needs. I agree we need to be optimistic but we also need to reflect on this season: - [ ] Record Player Sales - Positive - [ ] Champions League Qualification - Positive - [ ] Worst ever Champions League Team - [ ] Changed Manager - fingers crossed Beale is the man - [ ] Toothless League Cup Final Performance - [ ] Board Changes - hopefully positive - [ ] Bored is out of a Cup Semi - [ ] Miles back in the league Bin fire of a season! We all know the rebuild is crucial so our success rate needs to be much better than it has been. Rant over!

Andy McGowan

Because the reason we are relying on Sakala is Morelos. It's part of the discussion and I even used the word "context" 😂

Andy McGowan

So if he loses in a fortnight you want him sacked before he has a chance to have his own players?

Martin Boyd

McCoist was the manager with Boyd , Miller, in teh championship and he didn’t get them scoring goals. Just because a guy instinctively knows how to do something doesn’t mean he can teach others that skill.

David Baillie

Totally agree Spoon. Someone needs to have a word with Beale and get him to wind in the rhetoric. Way too much chat and buzz words. He doesn’t need to go to the inane, bland garbage we were getting from Gio. Just have a think before engaging the mouth. Oh, and someone should sign him up to H&H, pronto. NS

Callum Dinnen

I need to take issue with Ross' comments about Champions League qualification being unlikely. As things stand right now in leagues across Europe, we would be the top seeds in the non-champions route, and can expect a tie against either PSV or Union St Gilloise. This assumes all clubs currently in qualifying positions stay there and all seeds progress against non-seeds in previous qualifying rounds. Obviously there are a few moving parts here given most leagues have 5 or so games left, but the only way we will not be seeded in the play-off round would be if both Porto drop to 3rd and Ajax improve to 2nd in their respective leagues. It's not going to be easy - but as things stands just now CL qualification should be achievable.

Spoon

👍🏻 same boat. I’m always slightly confused by the idea Beale had a bad hand but Gio was just shite when he had a worse hand and more injuries. I’m not saying he was good and the stats don’t lie but I can’t see the logic in one being written off and the other being given the benefit of the doubt. This is especially true and half the squad is guys he had in his first spell who weren’t great bar 55 which the more we go on was clearly an outlier.

Euan Dover

These players aren’t great but they’re not that bad. It’s not Warburton or Pedro level duds we have here. I would’ve expected Beale to get more out of them / playing better than they have. The fact he hasn’t (on my judgement anyway) is why I have some doubts. I don’t side with the ‘it’s the players’ argument as time after time managers have come in to dead squads and turned them around. Let’s hope he gets some quality in the door and indeed is capable of winning over a 38 game season and toppling them in the cups.

Spoon

Why? everyone judged Gio on it with more injuries ? I’m not saying Gio would have made it my point is the same cold rationale isn’t being applied, Beale seems immune. I personally don’t favour sacking guys and have banged on about squad refresh but I don’t relate to Beale having done as much positive as others seem to see. He brought and sticks by lots of the main problem guys like Kent.

CJT

Yeah, was starting to type about the difference in approach most seem to be taking between the two but... I accepted GVB had lost too many of the fans and had to go, but you can't say Beale deserves a chance GVB didn't get - to build his own team. Even if you think he was responsible for last summer's signings, injuries royally screwed that chance. Anyway, hope MB learns lessons from last year. If Gio can go from cup winner and European finalist to a failure in 4 months with these players, how long will it take for MB with nothing to show if this doesn't go well. Again really hoping we don't find out.

Heart and Hand

He didn’t buy them. You can’t beat him with that stick. To me that’s starting from a point of view and working back to look for evidence. And as for ‘he didn’t turn them round’ a simple look at points won under him v the preceding Gio tells you otherwise. I get people have made their minds up but there’s a lot of spurious justifications being made when, let’s face it, the argument is basically’he hasn’t beaten Celtic’.

Heart and Hand

It’s been strange watching your turn here Spoon. You’ve gone from the players being the problem under Gio to the manager being responsible now. For me, the charge sheet against Beale has two areas of validity: he talks too much and hasn’t beaten Celtic. The rest is post-rationalisation IMO. There’s also the practical argument Andy mentioned. He IS going to be the manager next season regardless so people are going to need to get behind till the point where it’s either demonstrated he’s got a chance of success or he doesn’t.

Callum Dinnen

Sakala for all his faults a) was at least in a position to miss that sitter and b) created the opportunity for his shot which went out for a throw in by running at and beating his opponent. He is at least trying hard, he just wasn't very good on Sunday. Morelos doesn't create the same opportunities for himself, he's been here 6 years and still hasn't figured out that camping beyond the back post isn't a good idea when your wide men get into good positions. Celtic create loads of easy chances because Kyogo gets in front of defenders for low crosses to be tapped in. Opposition defenders get clearances in for the same low crosses because Morelos is constantly the wrong side. Look at our winner in last season's semi final - Sakala makes that by getting across Starfelt. Morelos doesn't get himself into those positions where he's putting defenders under pressure.

Callum Dinnen

Arfield has been a waste of a wage this season and would be a waste of one next season. The period under Gio where he was a trusted lieutenant is an anomaly in his Rangers career in the last 3 seasons. He started something like 11 league games in the 55 season and has barely featured since Beale came back.

Andy McGowan

But their operating markets, Japan, South Korea, , Benfica reserves, and whatever league MK Don's are superior?

ANDREW CUNNINGHAM

Lol oh I do hope it was a pie and bovril scented candle

Gregg McKee

Well yes. They are ahead of us in every single metric. Every single level, look at the youths etc. They are doing things right, we are doing things wrong. Can it change? Yes- But I’d doubt guys like Kieran Dowell will address the gap on the pitch. The lowest I’ve felt since Warburton if I’m honest.

Spoon

Your misrepresenting me. The issue IS the players at the core as it has been for seasons, many of those players incidentally the current manager brought to the club as part of the previous regime that was fading when he left or had since defended. My point remains the same I don’t want him to fail or be sacked however he is clearly being given leeway Gio wasn’t and I’m not convinced the net results are much different. I’m fine with him getting a chance, in fact I argued as you say for previous guy to get a chance with his own players and without the toxic core or horrendous injuries. I accept the results weren’t good enough but my thoughts are it was these players. Now some have Beale as having turned things round, many podders in fact after a few games were raving about the green shoots without much sample size. Players like Kent and Morelos were showing up again and should be kept until a few weeks ago. The crux is we either judge people the same ways or the comparisons are false. I want Beale to show he’s learning, I wanted Gio to get the chance to do the same as I hate player induced regime change. There’s no about turn, CJT sums it up in his reply. I’m happy to slowly trust Beale and get on the train but watching Rangers particularly in the last decade I’m not rushing into quick unqualified backing of a guy who hasn’t convinced bar the magical 55 season. I personally don’t think our current play isn’t miles from where it was at the start of the season bar the few bright sparks from the new signings who are indeed exciting but we have had these initial sparks from players before only to see them fade, Lundstrum has had more false dawns than I can count. I understand why some can go all in and all out quickly I’m not doing that, I’m actually saying that it’s time that decides if someone is good or bad, so while he certainly isn’t sackable or near it he’s also not yet the Messiah for me. Is he rubbish ? No Is he doing well ? Not spectacularly as some would have it. Can he improve this squad? No more than Gio could although clearly there are enough of his boys that won’t fully down tools or maybe he has just had a few signings and less injuries, hard to say. If he doesn’t get backing or if he chooses his signings unwisely or worse if he keeps the wrong people this summer will he be in bother? Absolutely. I’m 100% decided on some players and have been for some time. Too many haven’t delivered, the stats show it. I’m 50/50 on Beale, some good some bad but the big thing I won’t do is go all in as if he is miles better than Gio as I don’t believe he has made much more than marginal gains and had a much richer squad. Enjoy the debate, not looking to gain converts, just genuinely don’t feel we need to be all high or all low and some of the gushing praise (and to be fair desperate critique) isn’t merited.

Spoon

In fact mate maybe I’m misrepresenting myself…..I do use this as my therapy where get to flush out my bemusement at how the club has run recently…. Hopefully you get the subtle difference in what I wanted to say if I didn’t say it first time👍🏻

Spoon

Respectfully disagree, just recently he also didn’t beat Aberdeen and the main issue is there hasn’t been a huge amount of convincing victories to really get excited about for me. Main criticism of Beale I have is I’m not seeing much learning or progression. He seems pretty rigid in terms of players and style and he isn’t showing a willingness to change it. He has had all these midweeks to assess the players and work on their weaknesses OR set us up to play in a way that gives teams new problems. Hoping the same guys who haven’t done it do it this time without even a formation tweak or change in style isn’t a plan. I would rather see us fail with something fresh than fail with the same thing we did last time. It’s not just about winning by the odd goal, it needs to inspire and build excitement but mostly we need to worry teams and I don’t believe we do worry many coaches in the league now. I haven’t made my mind up about him at all, that’s part of the problem! I haven’t decided if he’s done enough to go all in with or he’s done too many things that give me the fear. You nailed it many have made up their minds messiah or naughty boy but I’m stuck somewhere right in the middle not relating to either position….what I have 100% said since the last kick of 55 though is we need to drop the attachment to players and rotate them out far far quicker as this mob went stale some time ago.

Heart and Hand

Same, as I mentioned the other day I don't bother if I don't think the person's points aren't valid. And I agree on the middle ground. I think either 'it's all great' or 'its' all doom' are quite reductive positions to take. Beale I think has a chance, and he has it in his own hands e player selection. He can be a success but it's also very conceivable it goes the other way. Let's hope for the former!

Heart and Hand

Disagreement on here is fine - it's actually very useful for me in terms of considring things I hadn't. The only rule is that it can't be disrespectful, and that goes for podders as well as patrons.

Spoon

No harm no foul, changed my viewpoint before based on stuff I hadn’t considered, as I say elsewhere bud my problem isn’t I’m one side or the other its I can’t quite decide…well on anything bar some of this squd are done but as you know I have said that for a while !

Russ

I understand why people want Beale to take after Gerrard in terms of the pressers but to be honest his style was quite endearing to our niche as Rangers fans. The same style in pressers down south with Villa went down like a lead balloon, they thought he was a narky prick. Most of this paranoia about his pressers comes from the online discourse between the two OF clubs anyway. Relax, if he doesn't turn it round he doesn't turn it round.
