Hoggy is joined by long time listener and friend, Duncan Wright, to discuss Rangers.

Some topical stuff to begin with, followed by something for the summer weeks - personal thoughts, experiences and moments from some great Rangers players.  This week - Ally McCoist.

Let Hoggy know here (or hoggy@heartandhand.co.uk) who he should cover and if you want to come on the show.

And of course, Father's Day - buy the book here! https://heartandhand.co.uk/our-rangers-heroes/

Rule in football I’d change - amend. When a free kick is awarded the team who it’s given against can’t touch the ball. Seems at almost every free kick the team who commit the foul kick the ball away - even if it’s only five yards. I know we do it too but it really does my tits in

Gregg

Great shout about ally after leipzig Duncan - watched it numerous times and it’s hairs on the back of the neck stuff. He is lost for words at one point which is a first

Kev Armstrong

Rule change. Goal kicks are taken from the pen spot to stop the time wasting of switching sides.

Ryan Macdonald

Duncan sounds like he’s from everywhere in Scotland all at once😂

John Gillespie

With regards to naming rights - the rugby league team I follow in NZ up until recently were called the Vodafone warriors- we all just call them the warriors and our stadium- Mount Smart has renamed Go media stadium Mount Smart again we just call it Mount Smart

David Clapperton

Great show again lads. Loved the Ally memories. Could we do I about Walter?

Pedro

Le Tournoi was the Bobby Carlos tournament in 97, think it's normally known as the Confederations Cup. Can't believe you never mentioned Laudrup amongst those no 11s Hoggy 😂 just shows the calibre of that particular jersey with the list of names you did rhyme off

Graham Ellis

I paused the hamper at the Ally McCoist memories so I could give my favourite memories of him (goals anyway) without being corrupted with anyone else's. Ally McCoist is also my hero and at 42, like others say, I still hope to be him when I grow up. My top three goals in no particular order are: His stooping, diving header against them at Parkhead in 1998. His overhead kick against Hibs in the Skol Cup final months after breaking his leg. His header at Ellend Road v Leeds in 1992 I love him 💙 ...back to the rest of the hamper now. 😀

Craig

Agree 100% with this. One other thing I would change is if it is a law then it should be used, like foul throws.

John Smith

My favourite Ally goal is the 1998 cup semi final. How could it not be ? The emotion, the passion and of course “how many times has this man been the scourge of Celtic ?!” I can distinctly remember my dad tearing up at that.

Duncan Wright

Ha ha. Born in the Borders. Uni in Newcastle. Live in Edinburgh. Spend a lot of time in Glasgow. Keeping you all on your toes 😁

Dougie Grant

McCoist was and always will be my hero, same as Coop.Love them.

Bob MacCallum

Re modern Gers keepers, don't forget Wattereus. He was the best one with the ball at his feet and his kicks were like Baxter passes at times.

Confederations Cup was used as the test event for the FIFA World Cup from 2005 to 2017 until it was discontinued that same year. The current FIFA Club World Cup 7-team format ends in Saudi Arabia in December. The new Expanded FIFA Club World Cup begins in June 2025 with 32 clubs from around the world with a host nation yet to be confirmed. The qualification pathway has been set and is available on FIFA.com but as with so much of football governance these days seems fluid and open to changes. Additionally, the 7-team format will adapt under another name on an annual basis and feature the six winners of the Confederation Champions Leagues. There is no name for this competition at present but the gist of it is that the UEFA Champions League winners will play the winner of a tournament featuring the rest in a one off final. The reason this tournament remains in some guise is because of the popularity for it in the other confederations and the way their national leagues and Champions Leagues plugged into the 7-team format both competitively and financially. I’m the General Manager of Auckland City FC and we’ve qualified for Saudi Arabia 2023 and believe we’ve qualified for the Expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 under the current publicly available criteria although we’re very cautious about taking that as a given without FIFA, OFC or even New Zealand Football confirmation that is the case. The Scottish Sun article about Rangers and the Expanded FIFA Club World Cup qualification story also expressed reservations about the qualification criteria changing unexpectedly so I guess we all just have to wait and see what happens.

Glenn Butler

My favourite ever Rangers goal was Ally at Leeds. But come on Hoggy, how can you make anyone choose just 3 McCoist moments 😂 You could fill a right few pod episodes out on the man himself Great listen mate 👍🏻

James McKenzie

Thanks for sharing that, Gordon. It will be interesting to see if FIFA successfully undermines UEFA (and other associations) through an expanded world club cup. At the current rate the top players will be expected to play nigh on 100 competitive games per year. All the best in your new role!
