City have always been my English team back to days of Corrigan, Hartford tueart etc. Been to Maine road and watched them away loads of times through all the shitty years . Just text my big mate who was at the match , who has been through all the shit as well . It's the likes of him i feel happy for more than the club. The days of me and him sitting on our hands in The Millwall end in div 2 when SWP scored his first goal for city are long gone now.

City best team in the land and the world

David Anderson

A poor spectical but city won even not at their best. I felt the changes for city, slightly changing the system and leaving out walker threw the game out of balance

Tamus

What an absolutely dreadful support

Norm

Stones or Bernardo Silva were MoM.

Ian Milne

I was slightly underwhelmed by this season’s Champions League. I struggled to find a decent two legged tie in the knockout rounds.

Ian Milne

I’m talking about the football plenty of decent matchups but they just didn’t excite when watching live.

An understandably nervy encounter. I don’t know any actual City fan that thought it would be otherwise. To pull out the point on City fans; A) that scene you mentioned with the 2 fans on phone and old guy were in the build-up to the goal not the goal itself & B) commenting on “polite applause”; that was 10 full minutes after the final whistle! Are the fans meant to be non-stop bouncing?? Celebrations looked fine to me for the actual goal and final whistle itself. And referring to Seville last year, well yes there were decent “limbs” in the Rangers end but nothing out of the ordinary, in fact I’ve not really seen any footage of the place going berserk (I was in Main Stand and it was quite good but nothing on a level with Ibrox). Check the footage of the fans in the front row at Hampden after Wright scored to seal 1st Scottish Cup win in over a decade… polite applause and one guy not even letting the goal disrupt sooking his juice through a straw.

Same- 1st game v Ipswich in relegation to league one season. Derbies v Stockport in League One! Son a diehard City fan as a result of my soft-spot (& growing up in England of course). Absolutely delighted!!

Scott Christian

Really? Doesn’t seem to be the case for that team from Salford that’s spent more than City across the same timeframe to win a few domestic cups & Europa League…

I was working at Wembley last Saturday and was in the City section, believe me it went ballistic in there and the atmosphere was amazing. Stop falling for the red tinged media narrative of City bashing.

Russ

Is what City fans say about their fanbase being predominantly from Manchester actually true for the reason why they don't sell out Wembley and sometimes don't get capacity at the Etihad? I'm not having a go but isn't the population of the catchment area for their local support in Greater Manchester over 2 million? And that's before you add in wider UK fans and fans abroad. I get the pricing issues etc but still, it is strange. They've had 10 years of trophies now.

Eric Stewart

The Etihad is always sold out and it’s very rare a Wembley allocation doesn’t sell out - and bare in mind the amount of times City have been to Wembley and the difficulties/cost of public transport it’s good going. As I said, don’t believe all the media mistruths about City and attendances - the facts are that City have been one of the best supported clubs throughout the history of English football.

Scott Tolmie

You will remember my brother then from the 80s, parlane, mcnab also, those were the days!

Scott Christian

Think for FA Cup semis & finals, LC finals & Community Shield finals City have been to Wembley 19 or 20 times since 2011. Never seen them not sell out an FA or League Cup Final. FA Cup last week was £110 and £100 concessions, before any travel. It’s an expensive do. In general most of the support is local, but buses travel from far and wide too, just not in the same numbers as for Utd. As Eric says, all home league games sell out, sometimes the cup ones are less popular and there’s always been that uneasy relationship of hating UEFA which until maybe a few seasons ago meant most City fans couldn’t care less about the UCL. That’s changed completely now of course- getting to a couple of finals will do that I guess. Utd have a huge chunk of their matchday support travelling from the south & Ireland too, whereas that’s not quite there with City at this point. Best way to find out about the atmosphere is get to a game! And it’s also worth noting that hundreds of thousands of the Manchester population couldn’t care less about football too.

I remember jim having a kick around with us in Whitehill sec school. I used to play for Dennistoun Waverley .he played in good Morton team with big Andy Ritchie.

John Walker

The only time I've been to the Etihad was for our final. Was at the last derby at Maine road when city beat them 3-1. Lived in London for years and would try and see them at the away games when I wasn't going up to ibrox. Always had a good travelling support.

Eric Stewart

There are also quite a few other football clubs in and around Manchester that have their own support aside from City & united not to mention the many rugby league strongholds in the region that have sizeable fan bases - in addition to those like you say who just don’t like football or sport in general. Manchester City hold the highest attendance records for English clubs(Chelsea are second too) and united only had their record home attendances when they were ground sharing at Maine Road after WWII - also this act of benevolence from City towards united prevented them from going out of business. The old Trafford record attendance is for Grimsby v wolves in an fa cup tie - and Liverpool’s record attendance would barely make it into the top thirty for City.

Been going to City games a long time. Lucky enough to see some other EPL teams over the years. City core support is as good as any of them. People forget the club is 140 odd years old, won titles and had European success before. Their fans have also had some really shitty times in the not too distant past and turned up and followed throughout that period in good numbers. Was lucky enough to be with some I've know for a long time and 10K others at Fan Zone in the Depot in Manchester Saturday night. Anyone wondering about the passion these guys have got would have found out there. Noticeable if that was seen in Istanbul or not but we should know better than any how UEFA ticket allocation works. Like any successful club they'll have their share of glory hunters at the moment I'm sure. Football tourists as well, but in the EPL that's not unusual. Those who don't know though shouldn't think as a group there is anything plastic about the core support. Like to see how the core support of the old gaurd of the EPL would've held up in the circumstances City have been in. Relegated and your main rivals winning everything for 2 decades. As for the money thing. Feck me, people in glass houses and all that. Are we saying some oil rich geezer comes to us and says I'm going to turn you into the best run club in the world and we say no? Come on, jealousy is all it is. Those of us who lived through th 90s know what its like to be hated for success they believed was bought. Didn't bother me then. Won't bother City fans now.

Eric Stewart

Their is a lot of very bizarre snobbery in this country about ‘oil money’, I mean ffs it’s a natural resource of the land where the City owner is from. Strange how nobody moans about West Ham and their ‘porno money’ or goodness knows how all of the other billionaire owners of PL clubs made their wealth. Shame nobody looks into Louis Edwards and how he made his money that funded the Ferguson era of domination over English football.

Scott Tolmie

40,000 in div 2, a very loyal fan base but definitely attracted a lot of glory hunters

Russ

Bit of paranoia in this thread. Would just like to see a city fan online own their modern history and say 'aye we wouldn't change our ownership for the world!' instead of the 'we're not experts in geopolitics/we didn't ask to get taken over! ..etc'. Although to be honest I wouldn't beg the constant scrutiny and belittling of achievements that they get. It must be exhausting. Especially, as said above, for the fans that have been going for years and generations.

Scott Christian

They do own it. Sheik Mansour songs about bringing the managers, City going down with a billion in the bank, beating you when you were shit, 115 the rags are in the press box going wild, fan banners saying thanks to Sheik Mansour. I get a lot comes across defensive, but the constant scorn of shit fans is the laziest trope probably does that.

Russ

Aye that's probably the difference between the match goers and the online presence mate
