Andy and Grant invite Jack Smith on to the show this week to look back at a damaging defeat from 2004.

Rangers had massively underachieved in Europe for over a decade, and defeats in the previous 2 seasons were very costly. But when Auxerre rolled into Glasgow for the final tie in the inaugural Uefa Cup group stage, surely the required draw was within comfortable grasp!

Once again, the team were embarrassing and the fans would go home bewildered.

Had puddles in my pockets on the way to this game. Absolutely torrential

Always find you guys do a great job of being analytical and turn a depressing subject in to a good pod. Well done 👏 Hutton didn't peak til later, had a lit of shake games during his development including a dodgy debut against Thistle a couple of years before and an awful European knockout game against villreal a couple of years after this. He peaked in the 07/08 season and we cashed in at the right time for return, prob not the right time for that european campaign though. AZ are now established as the 4th team in The Netherlands (it is North Holland, but for example Eindhoven is in another province that isn't Holland). Almost broke up the big three this season. There was mention of Parma in Advocaats first season near the end, Parma destroyed every team that season apart from us. Took a sending off for them to get the goals that put us out after we got the vital away goal Did we not beat Hearts 3-2 around this time to go top of the league, was a Sunday and the unwashed had played earlier in the day. Boumsong first game where he looked under pressure against de vries against hearts. Also had the "remember remember 2 games in november" double against the tarriers

Thank you Pedro, we certainly try our best. Re Hutton, that is fair with his development I just remember as a teenager wanting him in the side as felt he was better than the RBs of the time Ross, Bardsley etc but most likely done the right thing for his development overall

Just shows with Hutton that good things can happen with the right players. We are too quick to write off young talent. Especially when there are circumstances. Craig Moore was papped out at right back and even in midfield. Looked a dofferent player in his correct position. Charlie Adam played wide left of midfield without the athleticism, then showed he was a different player when played more centrally during time in England.

Hutton was coming on to a game around this time he unfortunately broke his leg against Kilmarnock a few weeks later which probably put him back a year.

Great pod, guys. I remember being totally gutted that night. IIRC Khizinishvili had been playing right back and had done well there until the game in Alkmaar. That prompted McLeish to move Ricksen to right back for the Auxerre game with Khishinishvili playing a man marker role in front of the back four, only to be ripped apart. McLeish received pelters on the message boards (no twitter back then). As pointed out, many teams progressed from the group stages either fewer than 6 points. Aberdeen progressed 3 years later with only 4. Had Alkmaar drawn in Graz then we would have progressed. I remember in the 2nd round of fixtures I was surprised to hear that Alkmaar had beaten Auxerre and had a feeling that result might end up hurting us. Indeed it did😩
