Ash and Trev are back, this time talking about Craig Paterson (who maybe should have had the captaincy longer?) and Hall of Famer Ally Dawson. Plus the one and only Terry Butcher who doesn't really need an introduction!

Dawson should never be in the H of F. Doesn't fulfil the original criteria, apart from longevity. But many others have achieved that but not in H of F. Not an outstanding player nor captain. Probably only captain because it was during Gers' worst spell in our history until then.

The court case verdict was absurd. The main culprit was MacAvenny whose thuggish action started it all but he was found not guilty!

Well done on an enjoyable pod. Craig Paterson was made club captain in 1984 in the wake of the club’s dispute with John McClelland over wages, which led to McClelland leaving for Watford. Paterson relinquished the captaincy when Butcher was signed. Paterson played a few times under Souness when injuries struck and did well, but Souness’s policy was that his first choice players would be back in the team once fit again. These were the days of only 2 subs and before rotation was standard practice so Paterson moved on. He often appeared on the old Rangers TV station which Setanta (remember them?) hosted so that doesn’t indicate any ill-will towards Rangers. He always come across, in his media work, as very pleasant and articulate. You point out that he never won full Scotland caps. That the Rangers skipper of the time couldn’t get into the Scotland team was a reflection of where the team was in those days. Apropos Butcher and the 1987/88 season, the claim that his leg break cost us the title is a bit of a myth - our league form between August and mid November was erratic and whilst we hate to give that lot credit Celtic were very consistent that season. In the 1st 2 rounds of the European Cup Butcher played. His leg break ruled him out of the quarter finals. We lost horribly poor goals in the early minutes of both legs as the Gough/Roberts pairing didn’t work well. Add to that the non-availability of John Brown, Mark Walters, Ian Ferguson and Jan Bartram, it adds up to a painful, if only style memory.

Fascinating read that David, cheers. Puts some great context to it all. It’s a shame he never got the captaincy for longer.

I still to his day cringe recalling Paterson being interviewed on the pitch after winning the cup (I think it was Dougie Donnelly who interviewed him) and in very rough Scottish accent said "the bears want trophy's". I was too young to be a Rangers Da then but that interview alone was enough to convince me that he wasn't Rangers Captain material. The David Holmes / Souness revolution meant it never became an issue. It did surprise me later on hearing him on radio and TV because he did come over very well (think he must have been super excited after lifting the trophy)

I thought he was a smashing player until he fractured his skull, was never the same after that, shame …
