The boys start by looking at the careers of Willie Mathieson and Dave Smith but also among the discussion was the European record of Rangers up until 71/72 and was this win overshadowed by events taking place on the other side of the city?

Sorry, Andy, but your comments re John Greig not being considered a legend by some are nonsense. Greig won 3 Trebles, captaining 2 of the sides plus other league and cup trophies. As for Cooper, his first season with us was a Treble-winning one then other Scottish and League cups. He'd won everything before Souness came. To justify Tav's inclusion by comparing him with guys like these is desperate. Tav barely fits any of the criteria for the H of F. Longevity probably the only one.

Beckenbauer wasn't the original sweeper. The system started in the 60s with Helenio Herrera's Inter Milan and his cattenaccio system where in this ultra defensive set-up the sweeper sat BEHIND the 2 central defenders. Known as the "bolt" he was this guy who stopped attacks that got past the central defenders. Hence, sweeping up. Not a player who started attacks from the back. Think Picci was Inter's guy.

That's not what I said Bob. Of course Grieg is a legend! I was talking about a period of his rangers career, same for Cooper - should two great players statues be reduced by the sub standard teams they play in. YOU'LL BE HEARING FROM MY LAWYERS 😁

I know what you meant. Though you might not even be correct, Andy, if all Greig HAD done was appear during Celtic's 9 in a row period, with us winning the odd cup. Greig was a titan during that period, carrying us on his back practically. Captain of Gers and Scotland, he was immense then even if he had only had a couple of League and Scottish cups to show for it between 65-74 however he would still be in the H of F. PS keep wearing those jackets. I love them.

Re the sweeper chat, John Greig deployed Sandy Jardine as a sweeper during the European Cup run in 1978/79.

Andy, stop digging. Tav is nothing like Greig in any manner. Greig CARRIED the Gers team of the late 60s for YEARS. He could have gone to a top English team but stayed loyal. He inspired players and fans alike. He was the SPIRIT of the club. Er...Tav nowhere near that category.

Best sweeper was Tugay - 100% record

I think you're taking it too literal as a direct comparison. Constantly amazes me that we can't just all agree Tav has been a great player for us, despite playing with sub standard Rangers teams for a fair chunk and is worthy of substantial credit, which is both deserved and absolutely held in the context of the time he has played for the club. The knicker twisting is OTT
