Rangers Announce Signing of Leon Balogun

RANGERS are delighted to welcome Leon Balogun back to Rangers, with the central defender signing a one-year deal with the club, subject to international clearance.

Quite a clever wee video to announce it. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Ross Matheson

Hope we're still signing a first choice CB to replace Davies / Helander. Balogun cannot be our option beside Goldson for a majority of games this season. (realise Souttar might well be regularly fit this year all the same) Hope we don't waste what's been a good window so far by settling now. If we can move the likes of Kamara and Colak on and it frees up wages and fees for a CH signing, I'd be pleased at that point.

Rod

Pathetic signing from the club in all honesty, dress it up anyway you want but this a joke and deep down everyone knows it.

Stewart Campbell

Dreadful, I’ve never known a club as bad for bringing players back. Very average player who is injury prone.

Mark

Why? King is injured long term, he's more than an adequate replacement for him. If we get to the end of August with no more defensive reinforcements then most will agree with you. Think you need to calm yourself a bit until then.

Gordon Mac

Against the grain it would appear but it's a sensible signing to see us through

John Smith

I never thought I’d see the day 🥲 all the doubters and naysayers are going to be proven badly wrong

John Smith

I couldn’t disagree more. Leon’s a cracking centre half who loves the club and will prove a massive part of our team

Adam

We should have never of binned him off in the first place. It was stupid and what went on last season at Centre half was proof of that. He had fitness issues last season, but he also missed all of pre season because he was without a club. Beale leaving midway through the season at QPR likely ended Balogun's time there prematurely too. I honestly don't see the issue some people seem to have with it. It's a year long deal, as 5th choice. He played 28 games during the 55 season, he played 37 during the Seville season. Not bad for what was essentially a back up centre half, who was brought in so we could rotate Helander out of the team. Edit: His last act in his previous stint at Rangers, was starting in and winning the Scottish cup.

Ross Matheson

He was our best defender, once, in a game where he played out of position and marked Kyogo well in a game we won. His myth has grown to legendary status at this point. He's also got an awful injury record. He's a likeable big chap but he cannot be anything more than a complete back up for around 5 games or so this season.

Rona Bluebell

I trust Beale and he’s picked him, so welcome back Leon!

Ryan Lynch

I'm in the minority too, of not wanting him to leave in the first place. At least, I think we are in the minority.

Keith Kettlewell

IMO the only reason he left was because we were stuck with helander, good addition as long as he’s cover and not a first choice

Adam

Rather embarrassingly I wasn't upset when he left, didn't actively want rid of him but wasn't fussed. Fast forward 2-3 months and I very quickly re-evaluated that position.

Craig Kennedy

What's our scouting dept doing If we are having to re sign a mid 30s defender

Stewart Campbell

I agree , people forget the Prague game in Europe and also champions league qualifiers when he was rubbish. Hopefully he doesn’t have to play much. Seems a great guy but that’s not really enough to play for Rangers.

Stephen

To be fair, we have spent plenty of money this window and there will probably still be 2 or 3 signings still to be made. He knows what’s expected of him and won’t be on a big wage and on a short term contract. People would be moaning if we signed a loan player or were relying on a youth player who isn’t ready yet (like King last season)

Elaine Campbell

Great news. I dont get all the doom and gloom over this. He’s not signed to be first choice. We’ve got 3 centre halves the now. Souttar is injury prone, Goldson is injured, Davies may be sold. And now king has injured himself at the camp. Balogun never put a foot wrong when he was here before, knows the club, loves the club, has a league winners medal and can step in if and when needed. We’re not signing him to play 50 games this season. Welcome back big man!!

Kenny Morrow

Superb news. Modest salary. More than able back up. The last time he exceeded expectations on numerous occasions including a masterclass performance stepping in for a Tav at RB, then putting Kyogo in his back pocket.

Nicky Cuzin

I didn’t want big Leon to leave in the first place, given Helander situation. However I don’t think that speaks volumes of scouting in general and Michael Beale personally if 35-year old player is an answer in our biggest season since 55

stefan strzelecki

Love the contribution he made domestically and in Europe. I know he adores the club. I just feel we need to focus on dynamic , younger, players to reach our objectives. After witnessing our recent failings on all fronts, I think it’s understandable that supporters are not unanimous in their fervour for this signing .

Aatlis

If he is our last defensive singning of the window then I'll worry. I don't think he will be and therefore I'll wait till the window closes before making any judgement.

David Innes

If we sign another quality centre back then it’s an ok signing as back up - if we don’t then we’ve left ourselves massively short again

John Palmer

So glad we re-signed him. He's a hard worker, good versatile player and an infectious character to have around the Team. He's always bought into being a Ranger and knows what it means to play for our Great Club.
