Martyn and David return with their show looking at historical talking points. With the recent coup attempt in Russia, they look back at some of the previous powergrabs in that country's history and look at the similarities.

Yaaaas. Really looking forward to this. The Bolshevik revolution was a favourite topic of mine in higher history at school

Colin paterson

Have spent the last three weeks listening to the old History boys pods. Delighted its back

Tommy

An unexpected pleasant surprise 👏🏼

Charlie Nicolson

Great! I'll listen to this en route to 🇨🇿

Scott Mackay

What a surprise! Love these pods. Class as always

Mark Davidson

This coming back is better than any signing this summer

stevan castrissios

Enjoyed this. Regarding Stalins Russia, David suggests brainwashing, Martin propaganda. After reading ‘The Gulag Archipelago’ I’d suggest tyrannical. Russians coerced in to supporting the leader - or else. As the pod deals with coups in this region it would be remiss not to mention the successful Victoria Nuland lead coup in 2014 which removed the elected leader of Ukraine with devastating consequences going forwards especially eight/nine years on.

Mark Davidson

Great listen. Be interested to get an opinion on why you think Russia invaded Ukraine? Is it a land grab in fear of Ukraines closer ties to the EU and Nato, does he actually believe the neo Nazi comments he keeps repeating or did he genuinely think that the majority of Ukrainians see themselves as Russians and thought they'd be welcome with open arms? I'm not fully on board with the whole western media agenda of Ukraine being the pinnacle of western and European values but do think the invasion is wrong, my opinion is the continued expansion of Nato has triggered it. That may be a good history pod to do although modern history I appreciate but the formation and continued expansion of Nato. Why it happened and the effects its had.

Heart and Hand

It’s very interesting. I think it’s probably a combination of all those things. At heart I think he genuinely believes Ukraine is part of a greater Russia. But how he extricates himself from it is the challenge.

Alan Spiden

Brilliant to have this back chaps and another fascinating pod. Thank you!

Geedubya

Great to have you both back - I love these pods. Much appreciated chaps!

Mark Boyd

No mention of Oleg salenko

Robert White

Is that the one where 3,500 Americans sailed to Russia loaded with cash and started a revolution that killed 30 million Russians? That one?

Graham McCallum

Love the content guys. Russia has always fascinated me especially the way the people just seem to bounce back from absolutely horrendous hardships

David Scott

Good to hear this again been too long.

Martin Boyd

Well done boys thoroughly enjoyable although I do like, And the rest is History 😂 I cannot believe Colin asked that about Napoleon , actually he’s the boy who only goes to Florida and only eats steak and chips , so yes I do believe it.😅

Mark

Superb!

Zander West

Brilliant listen, always enjoy these pods!!

John

Great show guys. Fascinating stuff and jogging the memory from boring fucking lecturers in school modern studies. Wish I had listened back then. 👍

Iain Campbell

Outstanding gents. Can we have an episode of the European Revolutions from 1789 onwards?

stevan castrissios

Great points raised. If you enjoy reading non fiction, I recommend ‘The Globalization of NATO,’ written by Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya. The book was excellent, compelling and easily readable. As relevant now as it was back in 2012 when it was first published.

Steve Clark

I think Putin has got russia into a “Vietnam” type situation with Ukraine and I can’t see any situation where they win,it could be argued as well that the ussr invasion of Afghanistan was there Vietnam

Marcus Black

Great show lads, pleased to hear it again

Calum Robertson

Introducing David as you partner in crime, surely for these Pods he’s your partner in time ?

Iain Henderson

Great to have The History Boys back again

David Baillie

Great stuff lads. A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. Indeed.

Brian Johnstone

Loved that gents. On the patriarchal figure, do you think China is the same? I would imagine controlling that volume of population can only be done by totalitarianism. India may be different but they had the British influence.

Kev Roberts

Love these shows boys well done!!
