Gregg

RIP Trevor Francis - scored a penalty in my first cup final and remember practising the “Two Step Trevor Francis” in the playground

David Simpson

One of the greatest moments ever, Jim Leighton went ballistic - Trevor was a genius player

Stephen

This is what I remember about him too. Think I was 8 years old at the time but I remember thinking I had never seen anyone take a penalty like that!

Scott Tolmie

I don’t get the lowry one, you will never know if he’s good enough without giving the boy 6-7 games in a row

Boab hanvey

Bob Seger 😍😍😍 love it, RIP Trevor francis

Tamus

RIP Trevor Francis - a wonderful footballer

Gregg

I’m a big Lowry fan having seen him in the B team. However - he is getting the chance to show the manager he’s good enough every day in training. He needs to grasp it - cliched as it is the Gerrard quote about going in every day to be the best player in training.

Scott Tolmie

Training and playing in real games are entirely different, I know for a fact how highly he is rated by people at other clubs in Scotland, something isn’t right, it’s not just lowry, we as a club are very poor at giving our own a chance but happy to let others have shockers week after week

Tamus

I would actively encourage any child of mine not to sign for Rangers, the path into the first team is absolutely chronic, Lowry, McCrorie, Mayo, McCann, Devine all spring to mind as players I don't think we're given a genuine chance, I'd love to know what the likes of Diallo and now Matondo do in training other than having exoctic surnames

Doug

I think the best plan would be to get them to sign initially, benefit from the top class coaching and facilities, but then have an understanding that come the late teens/early 20s they should leave and get solid game time, make themselves a mainstay for a team. If they end up being good enough, they'll work their way back eventually.

Heart and Hand

We as a support aren’t exactly patient with youngsters either.

Graham Jones

Trevor Francis was a gem of a player and a real gentleman. He’ll be sorely missed. Sending Lowry out on loan is development not defeat, but Adam is absolutely right that this is how the support seem to view it. We do this because we were once a cash rich buying club, and have failed to educate everyone on the shift to development. At the end of the day it’s up to the player to make it happen. The manager needs to tell the players what he expects from them if they go on loan, because there has to be a reason for sending him out for a year.

Doug

As far as I'm concerned, a solid loan period should be an integral part of youth development. When they are speaking to youngsters in their early teens and laying out of their path to the starting eleven, a loan period should be there as an exciting point for them to really prove themselves and showcase their abilities. Ideally we should forge a relationship with a club at a decent level, be that in Scotland or someone in Europe, where players can regularly go on loan. Loans should also ideally be a minimum of two years (with optional return point half way) to really give the players time to bed in and show what they can do. Scotland-wise, I think teams like Kilmarnock, St Johnstone or Livingston would be perfect for such an arrangement.

Gregg

Agree - however if you’re not playing the only option is to make it very difficult for the manager to leave you out.

Gregg

The support want young players to play - but also want us to sign an experienced 5th/ 6th choice centre half. If you can’t play one of your promising youngsters if you have four centre halves injured, when can you??? We also have the mantra that they should only be blooded when we are playing well etc. We should be focusing on a lean squad of quality rather than the bloated mediocrity we have seen - in the main - over the last half dozen years. If a promising kid can’t come in and play beside 10 experienced pros against some of the dross we play against - questions should be asked of the youth dept

Gregg

We aren’t patient with anyone David - Lammers was written off before he was signed and after scoring on his home debut by some. It’s chronic

Gregg

Personal view is that for some positions in the team a loan in Scotland to one of the teams mentioned would be fine - goalie, centre half etc. Given the contrasting styles of football, I do wonder what going to Livingston is going to teach a young central midfielder hoping to play for rangers

Billy Forrester

Maybe because the vast majority, not all are just not good enough to be in the first team. I like Lowry however I fail to see where he would fit into our midfield this season, Lundstram and Jack won’t be regulars and will be squad players once cifuentes arrives, Raskin and Cantwell are nailed on and Dowell looks good so far all be it only friendlies but signs are good, the rest of the midfielders at the club are scrapping for a place and Lowry would struggle for game time. As a fan base we are hard to keep happy, sima has been written off by a lot in social media after 2 friendly appearances, madness we can judge him so far based on that but hey, that’s our fan base 🤦‍♂️

Doug

There is something to that, but for me ultimately if a player is to be good enough to play for Rangers they should be adaptable. Regardless of who they are playing for or what style they are playing, I think the most important part is gaining that first team experience, with the pressure and routine that comes with being a starter. They should be good enough to express themselves within whatever set up they are playing and then come back to us and be trained in whatever style we are playing. Making the step up means in all factors; quality, mentality and tactically. You only need to look at the Scottish players who've been able to make the step up. Whether that's an Andy Robertson going from Scottish teams to England, or players like Boyd and Naismith, who shone for Killie then made the step up to perform for us as well.

Ryan Stewart

I think the opinion the support in general have of Lowry doesn’t quite match the reality of how the coaching staff view him. Think we are at the point now where we need to stop blaming the club and whoever the manager is and start looking at the boy himself. If he’s not fancied by now there’s a reason for it, whether it’s ability or other factors. I’d like to see him go out on loan, preferably down south or even abroad if possible to get him out of his comfort zone

Scott Tolmie

I get what you are saying, I’ve said this to David before but I genuinely think we should scrap our youth setup, they just don’t get a chance.

Mark

36 years on and that penalty still gives me the fear.

Colin Gardner

Sad to hear about Trevor Francis. His penalty against Dolly in the LCF will live with me forever. That run up man! R.I.P.

James Muir

If Fulham sign bassey from ajax for 18 million as reported does gers get anything from ajax in the deal?

Gregg

On the tactics pod - said it’s 10% of profit. So no

Scott Tolmie

I’m personally wouldn’t let any of our players go to killie or livi simply because of the surface, would be happy with a mwell, st mirren type of club

Gregg

Agree there is definitely a lack of progression - hopefully this is something that is being assessed under the new regime. I would hate to see us scrap the youth system - we need to do it better and have a leaner squad so there is space for them. There has been examples of players who were better in games - Lafferty being a famously poor trainer. That’s a mindset thing - we can’t afford to carry players to see if they are good enough. Doing it in training against Rangers players consistently - who are of a much higher standard than our opponents - seems like the way to go if you have the chance.

Gregg

If other Scottish clubs can develop players - and we are getting the cream of the crop of the youngsters - it speaks to an internal issue

Rod

I wait my whole life for us to have a star Brazilian striker only for him to switch nationality a week before he arrives FFS.

Doug

Good thought, I never even though about the pitches. Although, if they can hack it on that they can hack it on anything lol.

Tamus

I think our support would be more than patient with Lowry, he comes on and plays extremely well, scores plays passes that no one else sees and his reward is to be dropped for months. Lowry Yfeko and Rice must be developed and used. It's and absolute MUST. McCrorie is a lost cause now, the boy must be absolutely scunnered - a huge part of that was due to the idiotic 1 year deal handed out to Greegs a year ago. Our player development and promotion needs to improve dramatically or Lowry will go the same way as McCrorie

Billy Forrester

Other SPL clubs develop players because they have to and cannot afford not to however they are not very good and few go into bigger things, we have the cream of youngsters however the vast majority are not good enough to displace the players we buy, there will be the odd exception however and our youth system does generate money by selling a mcrorie, a mayo, a McCann etc and you get the odd gem like Nathan Patterson who we make millions from. We also have big EPL clubs who can buy our young lads as was proven by Billy Gilmour and there’s not a lot we can do about that due to the finances involved for the player and his family. I love the look of Bailey Rice however he needs time and patience not just threw in cause our fans love a home grown. Sadly patience amongst the vast majority of our support is lacking

Douglas Hannah

And a large part of it is down to the supporters who just won’t have a youngster coming in and making mistakes as he learns the game at that level.

Jamie Kirk

King back in a month. Yfeko going to be great. Balogun a great influence in and around the team. Defence is ok in my opinion if we keep Davies along with goldson and souttar

James McConnachie

Two points regarding youth development and the comments made in the update. Firstly, Barry Ferguson was 25 years ago. The fact we use him as an example is bit of an issue - if my memory serves me correctly Walter Smith didn’t play him and then Advocaat came in and he played. So the idea about managers not having a confirmation bias is incorrect. If talent always pushed through then we wouldn’t have been able to sign Cantwell. Secondly, we never cut a pathway for Patterson. We sold him after the equivalent of 17 full games when a player trading model would have sold Tav and retained Patterson. In season 23/24 I think we’ll struggle at rightback unless the Mustard is the heir apparent. To say questions remain about Rangers approach to homegrown talent is an understatement.

Tamus

I said at the time Tav should have been sold and Patterson installed as right back and possibly captain - that's the way the model is supposed to work - I was rounded upon by the Tav fan boys who obviously love the player more than the progress of the team

Stewart Thomson

Sold Tav to who though? I get what you are saying, but the reality is there has been no interest in Tavernier (to my knowledge anyway) since we rejected a £3 million bid from West Brom in 2018, the summer Gerrard was appointed. Patterson was going to get snapped up sooner or later, the notion he'd be our right back for years to come is sheer fantasy.

Gregg

Correct - good in theory shipping out the older players however given brexit reality is any top talent is likely to be snapped up relatively quickly. In reality we kept tav - who was absolutely key in our European run which saw us make record revenue. We got the best of both worlds in my opinion.

James McConnachie

Not for a career but for 3 or 4 years. That’s the progression. Not punting on emerging talent while it’s played only a handful of games. That’s small time thinking and means we’re always be saddled with projects, flawed or just not good enough players. If we hold onto the mentality that if a player shows a glimmer of ability they’ll be quickly moved on we’ll win sweet FA. If that thinking was correct we’d have won more trophies.

James McConnachie

Gregg - tbf you’re right Tav was instrumental in the run but also instrumental in the cross coming in off the right that allowed Frankfurt to equalise. For the life of me I don’t get this blindspot for certain players. If we’d won lots I’d go with it - but we haven’t.

Gregg

Hopefully in a few years with some more good euro runs and hopefully more than a few trophies - we’ll be financially robust enough to hold onto players when big money comes in. Personally don’t think we are there right now - we got bit on the arse trying it with Alfie.

James McConnachie

I think it’s knowing when to stick or twist. The signs were there that Alfie might implode as his agent was always agitating and he always verged on the unprofessional - backfired now. Kamara is another. It’s all about trajectory. I suppose that’s why it’s called a talent conveyor belt. We could do with a proper chat app on here.

Gregg

It’s a tricky one for sure - we all big up Ajax (Ajaxification) and they are selling hundred of millions of talent on a regulars basis. If you look at the ages of the players they are selling though they are getting younger and younger - think there is a FOMO with the big clubs. With their firepower - if they can’t withstand the PL then I think we would struggle as well
