In 1998 Scottish football introduced squad numbers for the first time. Gone were the days of 1 to 11 when you knew what position a player was playing from looking at the number on his back.

Craig, Ryan and Kev get together to discuss the history of Rangers squad numbers while reminiscing about the players who wore them.

First up are Numbers 5 and 17. As worn by Numan, Andrews and Hodson….

This is absolutely my kind of show. Here's me thinking I was the only guy who always wondered what number a new signing will get and the history of who wore what in the past and how its evolved!

Duncan

Great show guys. One player that I was wondering if you were going to mention was Kevin Thomson. When he signed he was given the number 8, but in Europe he couldn’t wear that number because 8 was register to Jeremy Clement. He had to wear 5 in Europe. Papac wasn’t in the euro squad because he was cup tied. Don’t know why that always stuck in my head.

John Smith

1. I think Dougie Gray is our greatest ever defender and Ranger (no offence John Greig) 2. I think you meant future Rangers manager Kevin Muscat

Duncan

I love facts like that too. Probably why it sticks in my head. I remember the Lafferty one, I think the 11 was registered to Josh Windass at that point. Forgot all about Kent. If you google Kevin Thomson Osasuna you’ll see a picture of him with a 5 on his shorts.

Kev Roberts

Nice little show thanks guys

Chris O'Brien

Enjoyed that. With regards to the number 5 in different positions in world football - Milan Baros wore it as a striker for Liverpool, and it absolutely grated on me. And I'm not going to admit to having Burke 17 on the back of a top once 😉 Hope this series continues lads

Kev Armstrong

Well have a section on the worst numbers as I’m sure a striker has worn number 2 and Gallas wore 10 for arsenal

Gordon Masterton

Great show enjoyed that a lot. I think I tend to think 5 as a CB but yeah 2 of iur best LBs have worn that number. In football Manager I always give 17 to either my second choice left or right attacker so Aribo works perfectly for that.

Iain Shaw

Enjoyed the show, looking forward to the next episodes.

Stephen Ramsay

Good show, I do enjoy a squad numbers discussion

Scotty

Good first episode, you can’t have too much Kev 👍🏻 look forward to the next one.

Swiftly moved passed Kevin Muscat on the number 17 chat, a player even Big Eck wouldn’t risk against the beggars
