Was Man City Waterreus played for before Rangers. Only played once or twice

Loved Klos. Thanks for doing the episode. I'm sure I read somewhere that he'd had a bad accident while cycling a few years ago.

For me Klos is the best technical keeper we've ever had. I think his chilled out manner is part of why he's not higher up on the list of all time great keepers. We love the big characters.

Colin Hendry was signed well AFTER Walter left. Murray wanted him signed to have a Scottish presence in the team due to Advocaat signing so many foreigners.

David Kiltie

Walter was “nicely sacked” by Murray in autumn 1997 and his resignation was announced at the AGM. He worked two thirds of a season as a notice period - a mess of a situation. Advocaat accepted the post in February 1998 and although he didn’t take over till the summer he was looking ahead to his new position in the intervening months. With Andy Goram’s form going off a cliff we badly needed a new goalkeeper. In May 1998 it looked as if Klos’s signature was secured then the contractual issue arose. As I understand it he had completed the contract but the club had the option of an extra season (echoes of Jim McLean!) so after the court case he had to stay put. At Christmas 1998 Dortmund agreed to sell him to us for about £700k. Due to the hitch with Klos we signed Charbonnier in the summer but in November he suffered an horrendous injury in the UEFA Cup via Bayer Leverkusen so signing Klos followed on from that. Annti Niemi left in 1999 to join Hearts. Charbonnier was in effect sacked in autumn 2000. We then signed Jesper Christiansen as Klos’s understudy - yikes! Allan McGregor then established himself as 2nd choice goalkeeper. In McLeish’s final season Wattereus was the 1st choice keeper at the start of the season. After a string of bad errors Klos was reinstated for a couple of games but a poor display v that lot in the League Cup he lost his place straight away and only played one more game that season. When Le Guen took over Klos had a bad motorcycle accident. Letizi was first choice but his poor form saw McGregor become first choice. When Greegs was sent off v Hapoel Tel Aviv at Ibrox in the UEFA Cup Klos came on as sub and he played v Osasuna at Ibrox in the next round with Greegs suspended. He had his farewell at the end of the season, along with Prso and Gavin Rae. His wages were mind blowing by today’s standards but he certainly was a great servant to Rangers.

Am I right in saying that Dick didn’t rate him highly because I don’t recall him picking him a lot 🤔 or was there another angle I don’t recall?

Bob MacCallum

Would need to check but I'm sure Hendry played in most games in that Treble season. His basic, old-fashioned style of defending wasn't to Advocaat's taste I believe. Think he left in 2nd season of D.A.

David Kiltie

The normal back 4 in Advocaat’s 1st season was Porrini, Amoruso, Hendry and Numan/Vidmar. In the following season Craig Moore was the preferred partner to Amoruso so Hendry dropped out of the picture and moved on. I think Martyn Ramsey on Dominant recounted that at half time on Hendry’s debut Advocaat scolded him for a ball he played with words to the effect “do that once more and you’ll never play for Rangers again”. Hendry’s style didn’t seem to fit Advocaat’s way of playing so there was always the suspicion, as Bob says, that the chairman foisted the signing on the manager.

Adam Weir

Davie's influence in the defence cannot be underestimated. Made everyone who played alongside a better player.

The way he played huh. I loved his old school defending style. Didn’t call him braveheart for nothing. Maybe Dick preferred modern technical guys. Real shame
