Kilmarnock 1-0 Rangers Postmatch Reaction 5 Aug 2023

Rangers put in an awful performance at Rugby Park.

Comments

Mandy Lifeboat.

To many mistakes from Beale & I fear we’re seeing another Gio situation unfolding in the league.

David

100% agree that the goal spooked us and it's worrying no one stepped up to show a bit of something. Worry signs.

Norm

Spot on, no belief. No strategy, no system you could identify

AmoRangers

Spot on Davie. An abysmal goal conceded once again. Zero signs of anything developing with respect to offensive play. A chronic tempo, epitomised by Tav lumbering across the entire width of the pitch to take a throw, stopping a quick throw in by doing so, and then losing the ball. We were unable to defend balls into the channel despite the two holding midfielders that you talked about. Almost unforgivably the shirking and waiting until the magic 60 minutes to make any changes when it was clear after 30 minutes we were stinking Rugby Park out (and not adjusting the tactics at that). We've seen this now for the full 5 or 6 games since pre-season began, with little to no improvement. If we're not careful our season will be practically over by September. I'd probably go as far as to say that today was sincerely up there with the very worst of GVBs terrorball. There is time to fix it ofc but today was typical of what we've come to know from this squad (including the rebuilt squad on evidence since July). The singular positive is that Butland seems able to come off of his line and snuff out the type of danger that cost us stupid goals in seasons gone by. Him screaming at Tav to get forward also brought a wry smile.

Simon

Awful. I’ve now accepted this is who we are and I’m raging. Pathetic

Matthew Howie

Lose Wednesday I’m sorry he’s off

Stephen

Hope those 7 day free trialists are resilient. 🤪

Gary Smith

Bemoaning in preseason games our lack of width. We all know teams in Scotland will try to sit deep and compress the pitch, Baffling that the manager sets us up to play so narrow further compressing the pitch. Wrong team selection, wrong system and wrong substitutions today. Dreadful performance from players and manager.

chris smith

What on earth was the point of pre-season if all it succeeded in doing was delivering that? We would have been as well playing three amateur teams and winning each game 15-0 …

Colin Mathie

Bit early, probably, but what does Michael Beale actually bring to our club, like seriously?

John Smith

You deserved a day off for this one David

Spoon

Beale isn’t the tactical genius some people make out, I personally haven’t seen the improvement others have and his setup / tactics baffle me. This team is set up to be defensive, there is a huge gap between the midfield and attack and the forwards (this year and last) are constantly isolated and ineffective. Rapid improvement needed, the manager has been backed, he has HIS players in yet the same issues remain and the same tactical flaws are still there. If things don’t change we will ship too many goals and not score near enough.

Euan Dover

No tactics on show and none of that wild eyed passion to even compensate. How many times did Tav or Raskin float that ball in from deep? Totally indicative that we had no other idea how to play through them in the final third. It’s just like punting the ball up the park but in a different guise.

Mike Sim

He’s been here 9 months - nothing has move forward football-wise from Gio.

Billy Forrester

WATP, been through a lot worse than a defeat at killie on day 1, it hurts but I believe in this new side and good times will arrive sooner than later. Keep the faith folks, stronger together, time for bed

David Innes

Very worrying comments from Beale after the match.

Mr J K Murray

have to see how this team does on Wednesday, they may gel' in Eurpean games, which for a few seasons has been, caused a disparity with the trophys to win in the Scottish game, Souey made some coments about he still has his marbles regarding imput to our team, Coisty knew the scottish game inside out,how to get into the lairs & burrows to produce goals, thats the lack la, does the standard fluctuate that much in the scottish football, players who are serial losers, playing still in scottish football, they had limited success against european sides, still out if the coach is still up to the scottish football but 3 losses & if it continues, more change again ect, the back & front are rumbled & the season has just started, maybe turn it around & i can give davy 50p, hic

David Baillie

Punting the ball up the park can be a legitimate and effective tactic Euan if you have forwards who are prepared to fight and scrap and put pressure on defenders. I don’t think we won a single ball up front today.

David Baillie

Bang on the money David on all points.

Graham Ross

Another project manager. He said it would be a tough game and that goes into the players mindset. That mob across the road will keep winning trebles until the board address the Manager role.

Stephen

That’s not happening. The board aren’t going to back him with all that money then get rid off him after 3 games!

Graeme Glennie

At some point once again we're going to have to talk about our captain. He was our worst player today in all aspects. We're going to have to talk and come to terms that he isn't going to give us all the success we so badly want. His interviews and general demeanor is absolutely infuriating.

Al H

How do we manage performance analytics/tactics? Is there a dedicated team? Don't understand how we continue to approach to Klmrck/Lvngstn/Abrdn away games the same way year after year?

Colin Kennedy

Fair play David. Not an easy post match.

Gary B

Just a wee suggestion for Michael Beale - please build a team to deal with low block tactics.

Alan Stewart

Can’t argue with any of that. If Beales philosophy is not to play with wingers, he’s going to have to rethink it very quickly. I genuinely have no idea what our system and tactics were today? Much like pre season. What do I know though? I’m just a guy that loves my team. Wednesday is going to tell us a lot.

Chris

I'd be willing to cut some slack considering it's a new team, god awful pitch. But to be honest all pre season I've struggled to work out what our identity is. Same old calamities at the back and the usual slow, limp wristed approach in attack.

Craig

How can so many new players deliver the same familiar failings ? Really not sold on Beale and have no idea why he persisted with the same tactics today. Utterly depressing ( again!!!).

David Innes

Is there a Rangers captain in our history that’s lost more OF games? I doubt it.

Ron Jeffrys

Why did Cantwell not start, why has Alex Lowry been loaned, why, why why sign players who immediately resemble those they replaced. Just why?

Norm

He saw it was not working, what did he change at half time? Absolutely nothing.

Jamie Kirk

Since Warburton, why has our culture at the club been to over play, over pass, and to play in a way where we pass the ball between ourselves almost as if we are waiting for the opposition to get set up and ready and then we try to attack? Even during 55 we still did this but Celtic were so poor that year we had enough quality to see most teams off. Different in Europe. We would set up on the counter attack. We approached games differently. But domestically. Every year since warburton I have sat in my seat and said to the guys around me, why do we always slow it down and allow the opposition to get set up to defend us. Why don’t we ever try and attack at pace with runners and players trying to make things happen out of nothing? So many times, we stop the ball, we pass it back and to the side and back again and we are allowing 10 men to get set up behind the ball. Celtic don’t do this. They have a much more aggressive attacking mentality and they catch the opposition off guard. Why are we so soft? I am praying this team sparks into life once they have more games under their belts but history and my own experience of being a season ticket holder for 8 years now is telling me that we are not moving on from this passive, over playing, thinking we have a right to turn up and one two a domestic team off the park. The SPFL gets a bad name and I don’t think that’s justified. It gets more competitive every year in my opinion. Last year was the first time I questioned that but Ross county and killie showed today they are not Sunday league outfits. These are well drilled, fit and aggressive professionals with points to prove. They are hungry and we must always be up for a fight against any opposition. But today, once again, we don’t turn up. We over play. Over pass. Slow it down. No killer instinct or threatening play. Now and again we do it and we think wow the penny has dropped and we are turning a corner. Then it goes back to the slow laboured normality again. We are not good enough. Beale needs a reality check and so do our players. Actually feel sorry for the board who have backed him and trusted him. We don’t win on Wednesday and beales job is on the line already. No wingers. Long balls. Opposition keeper never tested. No plan B Are you warburton in disguise Michael beale? A football fan, who’s passes his badges in a classroom without ever being a professional footballer himself. Salesman. Talks the talk. Has never walked it. Great with apps on his iPad and drawing to tactical graphics but has never experienced these himself practically. Another ian Cathro who will never be a good manager due to never truly being able to to relate with players who are doing and experiencing what he never did. Makes you wonder. I really want MB to succeed. I really want us to be what we all want. It’s hard to believe it’s possible after last season, pre season and today.

Luke

“We wanted to play decent teams in pre-season so that we challenge ourselves”. Nae bother Mick. Said it after Hoffenheim, this team will not beat Kilmarnock. Can’t help but feel the remnants of Rangers past are weighing this team down like a fucking anchor. Get it sorted fast. A string of performances like that today will lead to questions over management.

Iain Shaw

Really disappointed after that. Partly because a lot of us had accepted when Beale came in, certainly after the New Year game, that the 2022-23 league title was probably gone, that there were limits to what he could achieve with Gio's tired team, that Beale would need the summer to build his own team. We've waited and been justifiably excited by the arrival of new faces and a younger, more energetic team. And this is what the team has delivered on day one? This after they struggled through preseason, didn't seem to improve or gain cohesion over the course of 5 friendlies, still looking lacking in fitness and clueless in possession while getting out fought by Kilmarnock.

George Leitch

It was an absolute shambles. Not one of these new signings look any good. Unreal.

Graham Jones

The warning signs have been there, so they need to fix it quickly. There is no hiding place at this club.

Adam Copeland

What I'd like to know and could Beale maybe be asked about this....why did the fans see this style of game coming but management didn't? Or seemed they didn't. I saw that the Kilmarnock team has had a bigger (or similar) makeover than us. The Tav / Lundstram throw in moment (where he sprinted from left to right) was fucking awful. Also, we seem to always have big problems defensively from long throws into our box. Why do we never do it??? See it work week in week out across the country.

Jamie Bell

Admittedly I'm bias on this as I didn't want beale from the start, but why did we give the job to a guy that can't deal with the low block in Scotland? Excluding one year, the 'brains behind 55' couldn't break down the stuffy defences in the spfl with his tactics. I just don't understand why we've ran back to this guy on the back of one successful season and an okay few months for qpr. To me it smacks of laziness and/or lack of imagination from the board!

Allan Osborne

It's as if the board goes for who's the popular choice on Follow Follow and nothing else. I didn't want him from the start either but hoped to be proved wrong. But here we go again. The same mistakes at the back, the same inability to break down a packed defence and an utterly baffling lineup to start with. That lot will not lose a game like that today, and therein lies the problem. We don't have the winners mentality. Very worrying.

Jamie Bell

Mentality is the biggest thing for me. I think we've had so many talented players over the last few years, which is why we got to the Europa League final. But the majority of them don't have what it takes to get it over the line.

Alasdair

You try to temper your frustration with the fact that it's early, and it's essentially a brand new team. But there wasn't even a hint of positive. We can't argue we deserved anything. We can't even say we know what the plan is. One thing that worries me is he doesn't know how to fit Cantwell and Lammers into the same team. And given the cost, that's worrying. Cantwell finished the season brilliantly as the attacking midfielder, but is now shifted out wide or even worse, not even starting. No width either. Tav and Barisic were woeful. Needs fixed and fast.

Spoon

I agree, I dont hate Beale but I struggle with some who make out he’s the messiah when he’s bang average and basically unproven. Could he be good ? Every chance, is he currently any good …… no.

Spoon

Where I have real problems is his recurring selection of guys who arent cutting it…..e.g. Lundstrum

Spoon

Im agreeing with you, please dont think this is aimed at you but….are we honestly saying the teams we played were top drawer ? It’s fucking Hoffenheim etc not Real Madrid ….I’m bored of the narrative they’re were top teams.

Spoon

100% I’m bored of hearing how he’s some kind of tactical genius, the guys a jumped up first team coach.

Spoon

I’m in similar place, take no satisfaction in it but it is what it is….

JM

The entire team and manager has changed yet the captain endures - and failure continues.

Stace1ofthePeople

Here we fucking go.. another season full of slow ponderous football, no imagination , lack of ruthlessness and goals. Yes it is groundhog dau because guess what the fans are sick to death of this and today's performance gives us absolutely zero hope about what's in store for us. This is on Beale... Now I am a Beale fan and I want him to do well but time and time again he is making BIG inexperienced errors that are costing us. ( OF at NY his changes ended us and we drew ! LC final wrong team started and SC semi same again, we lost!) WHY please explain do we go out today with the exact same defence asast season and lundstrum?! Seriously. I like the guy but let's be honest he's average and has been average at best for the last year! So why play the same ? Tav sorry but he can no longer be captain . After losing to Hibs at hampden 3-0 I've said it time and time again. He's soft as shite. Cantrell arguably our best player. Benched ? Seriously? For lammers who has had what, an ok pre season? Fuck me. The errors are so glaringly obvious. Slow ponderous shite and NO goal scorers. Wow . Tillman , arfield, sakala, cantwell, Morelos, tav (shouldn't be out top goal scorer but he is so I'll include him) our goal scorers and there all gone or not being played. Also sima? Am I missing something. No better than sakala /matondo or wright. Why are we signing these players ?

Gordon McCool

We can’t really expect anything different from this defence. It’s the same core players for the last 3/4 seasons. Is this not the definition of insanity?

Craig Armstrong

I wondered if I'd be a bit more thoughtful after a fee hours, but nope. That was awful. I'm struggling to think of a more abject performance from all involved. It's been mentioned before that we as a support knew exactly what Kilmarnock's tactics would be, so how come the management couldn't and then pass on to the players what to expect? I am willing to give the new players some slack, but not much. We struggled in preseason and I was concerned how we would play against a team who set up on their 18 yard line. The answer was not unexpected. One last thing, why was there no VaR check on the arms round Goldson? Well on to Wednesday, maybe we'll be a bit brighter at full time then.

KennyY

After a night of reflection and having to listen to all the nutters calling for Beale to be sacked. We dominated the game but couldn’t break down an extremely defensive Killie side. Beale needs to recognise quickly where the fault lies and fix it. For the last 2 years our captain has posted videos of him doing extra work over the summer but when the season starts he’s been slow and sluggish and no longer up to the fight. I’m sick of him saying that we must learn. We aren’t. Plain and simple. For many of us Rangers are our lives. We’ve waited so long for the season to start in earnest and now we’re deflated and our weekend is ruined.

Stace1ofthePeople

Chris are you not done giving this team and manager slack? Beale knows the league, he knows killie, he knows the pitch and he picks the players and the tactics ..ffs we should be strong enough to beat killie

Scott Brander

For me yesterdays performance was an absolute shocker and particularly worrying was the stuff that the management got so so wrong. Barasic, Tav and Lundstrum’s failings should be no surprise to any of us. What really hit home to me was firstly the lack of any obvious style of play, the lack of pace and movement, the tactical inability to deal with the low block which everyone knew would be coming and the lack of leadership on and off the pitch. No passion whatsoever from the bench or the team on the park. The board have backed the manager and bought what we think are reasonable talents, but not one appears to offer anything that we didn’t already have. I honestly cannot work out what our plan is for these players. Speaks volumes when we as fans are desperate for Fash to stay. MB has a lot to prove in the coming 7 days.

Stace1ofthePeople

Another post but this morning I am still fuming so here goes .. Beale hasn't changed our defence . So he must think it's ok ...tav/barisic goldson/soutar or Davies and lundstrum . Our defending is ABYSMAL plain and simple. We can't defend a long throw or a cross ball time and time again. My personal opinion is balogun would have cleared that yesterday. Goldson just back from injury no pre season game and straight in to starting 11? Now I know goldson played fine but surely soutar RCB and balogun LCB considering? Balogun would have cleared that yesterday on my opinion. Everyone saying "he's too old bla bla bla" he does his job and that's defend! Why spend 4mil on Ben Davies and players alike when we can't stop a simple throw in? We would be better with a tall Scottish defender who can actually put his head through the ball and clear it. Too much snobbery with rangers players at times. We've signed players to play in cantwell position and benched him? He carried us through the end of last season of what would have been even more embarrassing without his dig and desire to win games. Beale NEEDS to drop tav as captain, end of. His time is done. Its unhealthy! Who do we replace him with I'm not sure but Tav is not the man to captain this team. Have we improved creative players /goal scorers in the team ? Morelos (poor but had ok numbers) Aribo, Tillman, Kent (for his assists only of course) Sakala, Arfield, Cantwell, all gone and or not playing ? I'm hoping that this team 'gels' and we start to churn out results Personally changes I would make Tav dropped as captain (sterling should have been signed to compete replace tav if need be , if he's not good enough to walk in and replace tav then why sign him?) Lundstrum dropped (Jack & Raskin) Cantwell to start every game IN HIS RIGHT POSITION Roofe on> Sima BENCH

stuamaclean-rednblackscarf

Fair play to you guys doing this pod right after the game. I binned my phone and couldn’t bare to look at it at all until this morning. Even now it’s a though read/listen going over lasts nights crap. Underwhelmed doesn’t even do it justice, I have no idea what our tactics are or what we’re trying to do.

Moon Man

Massively disappointing day which puts pressure, we don’t need, on the new season. For me, Captain change is a must. Too many times we’ve seen a lack of in game leadership. Great player, still with lots to offer, but I’d like to see a change there.

Luke

They weren’t but it’s an easy excuse for them to make when they played poorly in preseason.

Grant Hutton

What is worrying is that we have heavily invested in this 4-3-1-2 formation. If it doesn’t work then we’ve had it. We have signed no wingers and have too many strikers to be able to mix it up and play 4-3-3 or similar

Adam Williamson

It was absolutely everything we feared we’d see. Limp, lifeless and clueless in possession, failing to even really work their keeper at any point. We’re guaranteed to have at least one defensive clown car moment in every game with those players, and sure enough Killie took their chance. Our response to that was the most worrying thing. We looked beaten as soon as the goal went in, and created nothing of note afterwards. If this performance is repeated anytime soon, Beale will come under immense pressure, and rightly so. We’re asking him to beat Kilmarnock FFS, they’re a big-standard, pish Derek McInnes team. It’s not hard. Wednesday will be interesting.

KMS

Beale is starting to get right on the nipple end of my man boobs, he can talk about the fans this and the fans that but ultimately he's just pandering and deflecting away from the glaringly obvious... We were SHIT!, He got it wrong, and the team submitted to defeat with not an ounce of fight I'm sick of the Tav set piece show, sick of if it doesn't work we will keep trying the same thing, might have worked for Robert the Bruce, but that was centuries ago and I'd like to think evolution has stepped in. The manager is on a slippy slope already and he better get this sorted pronto, if Midweek goes the same way he will be facing a support that are almost at the point of writing him off. We cannot accept this as being one of those things, we are Rangers, we are better than this, we cannot let this begin to seep into our DNA as just the way it is, if we do?.... We will forever be in the shadow of the scum

stefan strzelecki

Beale in the build up to the game, stated it would be a very difficult game. Perhaps if he spent less time expressing his own egotistical insecurities, the players would have executed a better performance . Negative messaging only serve to generate nervous energy to the players, and embolden the killie managers team talk. I couldn’t believe the lack of impetus to get a draw , particularly amongst the established group. They should know that the chance to eclipse the tarriers at ibrox would be a beacon to the supporters, and focus going forward to pull the club together. A real lack of leadership on the pitch and off it. The manager needs to be decisive in his tactics, and ruthless in resolving the deficiencies in our defence . Regardless of mutual social relationships he has with some of that group . I don’t buy that he has safe distance from the historic players. The club support is suffering , it’s all on him.

Graeme Burns

Ryan Kent’s fault again, lack of width, where the fook is he??

The Gallant Pioneer

How many efing times does Beal need to congratulate Kiile I counted 4 in a 5 Min interview 😡 it's looking grim

Spoon

I deleted my original rant, don’t drink and tweet…. In an effort to be more measured, that’s just not good enough and regardless of the factors like early season and new players the tactics and shape should be better, that’s on the manager. My personal opinion has been from day one that Beales tactical ability js overstated and is narrative than fact. That aside I don’t dislike the guy and want him to succeed but there are real concerns his original approach which did bring success has been worked out by the domestic teams. More worryingly he doesn’t seem to be able to change it or evolve it. The new players I’m happy to give time to settle before judging. All have the right profile but the worry about how the jigsaw will fit together is real and initial showings doesn’t scream goals, something we desperately need to put games like yesterday to be early and give teams some fear. The way we bike play is broken and a lot of that comes from the same faces doing the same things which experience tells us doesn’t work. Lundstrum is like an anchor when we try and get from defence to attack and if Beale can’t see this it’s a real issue. I have said all preseason, we don’t need to be slick and smooth but we have to be showing signs of things working, relationships developing and that we carry a threat, it hasn’t happened. If we were hitting more shots, scudding posts, scuffing the bar or at least showing intent that would be one thing, we aren’t it’s the same laboured overplaying from the tail end of Beales first time here as coach. I read some folk telling people it’s too early to panic, yes that fair but it’s not too early to be frank about issues. It’s also not meaningless to point towards the very very slim margin of error for dropped points due to how they rack up points, we might not be able to influence that more than four times a year but it’s still unavoidably factual. To go out yesterday and be surprised by Killie and have no answer to them playing exactly how we knew they would is criminal. They are early season, they have new players, they happily gave up possession to be far more threatening on the break, I get we might set up wrong but can the manager not change more than personnel, can’t we shift focus, change formation etc? No evidence he can to date and he’s been here a fair while now. What I think doesn’t matter in terms of change, Beale won’t phone me or comment on my post, I don’t get to pick the team but what I think is obvious even to a Rangers Da like me is if this continues and he will get his jotters. We are in real danger of dropping our demands and making a lot of excuses season on season for the squad or staff not being good enough. That’s the real issue, not enough trophies and too many excuses, it needs to stop. This year we seem to have got the players of a standard we would expect, time for the manager to show he’s not all talk, that there is real depth to his ability and he can actually change a team or game in play. I hope he does it but I am done with the excuses and I’m done being told it’s too early to have concerns.

Adam Williamson

There’s absolutely no reason these games should be difficult. We have superior players in every single position. There is a chasm in quality between us and this dross. But we seem to want to get involved in a battle rather than just overwhelming them with attacking force and demolishing them. That’s what we need to do. We can’t defend anyway, so why are we trying to base our game around that?

stefan strzelecki

I agree that there is no merit on players perceiving this as a difficult game . The manager was informing the group this was going to be a “ very difficult game”. I think the recruitment indicated the manager was going for a high offensive strategy. There is little evidence of this from pre season or the match. To win the title we require defensive reinforcements in my opinion. The championship winning teams concedes less goals and scores more. Rangers history informs my opinion on this.

Brian Stewart

Playing 2 DMs is beyond it.. obvs has no trust in the defence tho, and also this lack of width makes absolutely no sense.

JM

We scored zero goals - hardly blame that on the defence..

Gordon McCool

We also concede yet another ridiculous goal. I’m will to give the guys just I n the door some time to settle. Our defence is rotten and it’s the same core group that have been there for a fair amount of time.

Spoon

👌🏼Maybe the iPad the dugout is just running Netflix …
