I think the zenith of teams attacking and creating through their fullbacks probably came 3/4 seasons ago and has died off since, pretty much coincided with Liverpool winning the UCL/PL and us winning 55. You had full backs being produced everywhere, Alphonso for Munich, Reece James at Chelsea and lesser players like Wan Bissaka and Lamptey were being lauded. Teams sussed it out and it moved on, problem is we haven't and have stuck with it to our detriment imo. Great pod lads, I swear Steven comes up with a deadpan zinger that gets me every pod but no one reacts to it.

Aye, to be honest I heard G Neville say if your academy can't produce full backs then it's failing and I agree. I half believe if we'd have given Adam Devine regular game time last and more this season we could flip him for a tidy sum just because of the nature of the position these days. The blueprint is there with Patterson and others like Livramento and Neco Williams, Josh Doig. Dare I say Frimpong.

Like Devine - now knocked down to third choice which is a shame and unnecessary for me

The academy can produce any position and it wouldn’t matter, we haven’t had a coach bar Gio who selected any youth player consistently. We suffer from an age aversion and we continue to refer to players as kids at 18 - 22 where other clubs have had them in playing for years. If we aren’t willing to give regular game time to hit prospects in the 16-20 age bracket it’s pointless. Guys with talent should be getting 20 minutes in games to give them the experience needed early in their careers to judge their true ability to cope. We have signed academy players from elsewhere who were getting first team games or loans then immediately put them in the B team where they float for a few years then leave. We simply aren’t set up or of the mindset to gamble on youth our philosophy is always to hold onto veterans past their sell by date citing past glories as justification. We could change our whole squad ethos by properly committing to youth but we pay it lip service. In recent years we have developed very very few players, we have had projects or guys who come in stagnate then leave bar the odd exception, Paterson / Bassey wry few have improved here and gone up in demand or value. That’s why we struggle to get in decent fees.
