Apropos of absolutely nothing, Martyn is joined by Ross and David this week to discuss the perennial question of when is it best for clubs to pull the trigger? The boys discuss the dangers of dithering as well as being too hasty. Is there a perfect moment or is it really just when the faith disappears?

It’s linked to expectations. In our league, we should be winning 98% of games and winning them in style. If you’re not doing that, you’re drawing from credit in the bank. Historically, Grieg had credit, Jock Wallace too, Gerrard had glamour and beat Celtic so could ride it out. Beale is failing on all fronts and no credit. Our expectations are high and rightly so.

Apropos achieving surround sound.

You also can’t underestimate the influence of Gerrard’s hair. His hair alone bought six months. Magnificent hirsute standards.

Gordon Mac

If he gets beat Saturday 😆

Great pod gents. Would a rolling shorter term contract help with the potential financial implications if it doesn’t work out? Or would the unintended consequence be no one would take the role because of that?

For me its circumstance around the manager as much as the job they are doing. Personally I can’t be convinced that the biggest issues with Gios terms was him, I blame a petulant squad, an unprecedented injury list and zero investment in the mangers own signings. The profile of Gio was exactly where we should be in my own view and his football stature and back room team I felt had a real chance given time, investment and a fit squad. Where Beale loses for me is that lack of profile, the level of investment given and the lack of any coherent plan. I didn’t want a guy like him brought in as I didn’t think it fits our profile or needs, I also think we have developed a real tendency to over egg the achievements of people we sign or hire and elevate them well above where they actually sit. In a binary sense I felt that Gio and Beales toolbox to succeed have been polar opposites, Beale immediately got a bounce out squad (dead cat it looks like more and more), his injury worries eased and he has been backed significantly (it doesn’t matter if its net or gross spend) with a raft of HIS players. Gio also took on the resurgence of our rivals while still delivering, Beale has had the opposite and couldn’t capitalise. When the hope goes, when expectations drop and when your banking on turnarounds or mental maths to secure every point available and the other teams makes mistakes, when you need the other team to drop back for you to over take them the manager you have in isnt cutting it, for me thats when its time to change. If or when we do change I believe we need a proper character, we need stature and ideally we need a proven manager not an untested coach who appears (as it stands) to have a lot to say yet very few answers. Great pod 👍🏻

Thought we were back to OG heart and hand when David threw in the word fellatio in the middle of a serious point, only to realise he said fallacious...what a glorious few seconds though

The Forum is always thoroughly enjoyable, thought provoking and often enlightening. I really like the variety of content. When should a club sack a manager? When they've no other practical choice in the circumstances. Are Rangers in that position? Really? More established managers with more established squads have had worse starts to a season and been victorious. TBH the scorched earth policy of some ''supporters' distresses me greatly. It only entices disaster for the future financial, ethical and footballing culture of the club.

You also need to take into account gerrard had success in Europe with us! Ok never won a cup but every season there was improvement year on year

Key point from David that i fully agree with on managers. I personally just don’t buy the well they aren’t his players argument as a defence. They literally are his players, he’s the manager of the football club and as well as maybe signing some players a massive part of the job as a football manager/coach is to improve the players you inherit. Clubs maybe outside of the EPL just can’t afford to overhaul the playing squad every time they change manager. That’s where having a proper footballing structure comes in. Hire a manger who fits within the clubs recruitment strategy, that’s where I feel Rangers continue to fail and why the appointment of a new DOF should be a priority

Brilliant discussion as ever, a superb and always thought provoking hour every week. Well done Martyn on hosting my favourite show on the network.

Enjoyed this and I'm glad you mentioned the old example that's often used of Sir Alex Ferguson. Many do indeed forget that he was already a successful manager before Man U. He also has a mentality that many don't possess. I've heard a few use this example recently when mentioning Micheal Beale when really, it's comparing apples and oranges and simply ludicrous. The amount of leeway and excuses that I've heard/read being made for Beale genuinely baffles me.

The rapid sackings of managers in England, and especially the epl only started to happen when Sky began to plough shit tons of money into the league because chairman are scared of relegation, despite the parachute payments btw.
