Pedro

We signed Lovelace as a 16 year old, so whilst he's English he wouldn't immediately count towards homegrown status. Pretty sure you need to be trained in nation for 3 years between the ages of 15 and 23. So 1 more year in Scotland and he counts towards the Scottish status. However could still potentially sign for an English club next year and after a further two years there be classed as "home grown" in England

Andy Barnett

👍🏼 yep. And that’s the model we’ll implement. Although it would be great if he (and other academy prospects) could play and contribute to the first team before we make a profit on them.

Gary Q

Cracking show, enjoyed that.

Pedro

Yes, I'm excited about some of the lads and it would be ideal if we could start killing some of the jobber sides off early doors. Means that we can give these boys a run out. Always helps when they're on the bench to begin with though 😂

Scotty

Fantastic! Great listen 👍🏻

Pondo Sinatra

Really enjoyed that pod! Cheers guys! 👏🇬🇧

Paul

This was excellent 👍

Andy and Andy, thank you for a superb pod. A few observations, if I may. It chokes to give the manky mob credit for anything, but they have been successful with player trading. They sold Edouard and Ajer for about £25m two years ago which help fund Postecoglou’s rebuild. At the same time we missed the moment to sell Kent, Kamara and Morelos (says he with 20:20 hindsight!). The sales of Dembele and Tierney were triggered by their failure to qualify for the Champions League group stages, on which their budget was predicated. Niemi came in when it was clear Andy Goram was in decline. This was a major factor in our failure to achieve 10 in a row. Compare this to McGregor’s form in the season we stopped them doing 10, despite being fully 5 years older than Goram was in the corresponding season. Niemi was in goal in the 5-1 pumping in their midden in November 1998 but no keeper would have had much joy with the total joke of a defence in front of him. The Daily Record contrived a headline about “Old Firm graveyard for Rangers keeper” but in reality we were just waiting for Klos. Klos’s contract had expired in 1998 but a tribunal decided that Dortmund could keep him for another year. At Christmas Dortmund were willing to let him join us for a modest fee. Jesper Christiansen - yikes! We grumble about how our club is run now, but it doesn’t seem so bad compared to the nonsense that was commonplace in previous years. Looking forward to the next edition 👍

Gordon Mac

Good listen lads. There is that almost undefined value on a player ie what is he worth to us right now? Really interesting 👌

Andy Barnett

Cheers Gordon. Yes, will be interesting going through the various positions in coming weeks.

Great pod. Would be interested to hear if you think having a recognised “way of playing” would help us in this field. The teams that do this best seem to have that approach regardless of who is the manager they will play roughly the same way so that their transfer targets and their youth team are always working to the same goal.

Doug

Really enjoyed that and look forward to the rest of the series. On the goalies for money front, both Matt Gilks (To Wigan) & Liam Kelly (To Livingston) were reported as being sold for "Undisclosed Fees" so it's possible we do have a Top 3 there as it were. Both would have been exceptionally modest however, so hardly anything to shout about. I think we're making steady progress on the 'Forth Pillar' front, however from a fan POV it is the worst thing that something can be in football, a slow process. This is because of the fact noted on the pod that part of a successful trading model is evidence of outcome. That can take a decade to build as players move off into the wider football world and make their various marks. Sadly thus far, all our major outgoings (Aribo, Bassey, Paterson, Kent & Morelos) have been disappointing. We really need some of them to kick on. I feel like Morelos is one the club gets a bye on as I think we had to use him as a marker. He was the first player of the new era who'd made a real impact with his performances in Europe. He made others sit up and take note. Having been a soft touch for so long I think we had to take a stand with him and refuse to sell him for anything but absolute top dollar, even if it risked him leaving for free. This put a marker down that we would no longer let assets go on the cheap. His situation was then complicated by his injury and discipline problems, which were it otherwise I think we might have managed a sale. It's a real sliding doors moment as without that injury we have him in the side for that Euro run and I really see him potentially swinging the final in out favour. Coming out of a Europa League win, him and Kent almost certainly go for high values. Speaking of Kent, he is the one I think we botched. He should have been sold, even if for a lower fee, after the European run. Our stock as a club will rarely be higher and I think we should have capitalised on that knowing his contract was on the wane. Kent's final season was painful and leaving for nothing was a major misstep. With his momentum having run out he's ended up going to a new club on a low which he seems to be struggling to pull himself out of. We do however have some potentially excellent assets on hand. Raskin, Yilmaz, Cifuentes, Danilo and Cantwell all stick out as ones whom if successful we will be able to shift for good money. There's then a few on top of that who may take longer, or should at least sell reasonably, such as Sterling, McCrorie, King, Devine, Dowell and maybe Davies. We then have a final third of the squad whom we'll see leave for little but can then be replaced with youth. Barisic, Goldson, Lundstrum, Lawrence, Roofe, Jack and Tavernier. In some ways this is the most important from an on field point of view as it includes some of our most important and potent players. Like it or not, Tavernier is still our most effective player by a distance. We need a couple to step up and fill that gap when it appears or we'll be in more trouble than we are now! All in all I do think we've a squad with a lot of potential to maintain the selling model... but that partly lies in how successful they are on the pitch and the jury remains out in that respect. I do however think we have seen signs from most of them. Having a decent clutch of players from the continent I think benefits us greatly as well, as there is more flexibility in the European market than at home.
