Grant is joined by Andy McGowan and Bob MacCallum to go over the Rangers career of arguably one of the greatest strikers in our history,

Derek Johnstone. Although a prolific goalscorer, Derek preferred playing at the back and the boys discuss how this preference shaped his view amongst the

Rangers support and the impact his post footballing career has on his legacy

Yasssss. I’ve been waiting for this one. He was one of my first Rangers heroes.

David Herd

My boyhood hero, and without doubt the best all-round footballer I've seen at Rangers. International class defender, excellent midfielder, and a truly magnificent centre forward. Who knows the records he might still hold if he had played striker his whole career, and he had the dedication and professionalism needed to maintain fitness in his career post Jock Wallace.

CRAIG CASSELLS

One of my favs. Up till WC 78 he was an Ibrox colossus but on return from Argentina, and with Greig as new manager, I feel he never again hit the heights. A very under rated player with the ball at his feet but unquestionably there has never been a better header of a ball at Ibrox in my life time, Hateley doesn't come close.

Big DJ is in my Rangers 11 that I've seen. Great player. I'm writing this listening to the show so the lads might mention it but can anyone confirm DJs nickname?

Jim Milne

"Ajax would have made him better.....". Not sure Amsterdam could have survived DJ. Definitely a legend, loved listening to this pod lads. Fantastic.

Martin Boyd

Great player but I do wonder if he is looking back at his career with a little bit of regret over some of his decisions, I only mean playing wise nothing to do with his after football career. DJ with Smith playing just off him were devastating , he sort of crossed the generations my Dad thought he was great and after I started going around 75 he was my favourite until Cooper came along.

David Baillie

Great show lads. DJ was a wonderful player. I will never forget two goals in particular. I was in the South stand at Hampden in line with the penalty spot when Derek scored that marvellous goal in the League Cup final. Playing against two European Cup winning central defenders he gave them a torrid time that day. The second goal was what I still consider to be the best headed goal I ever saw. I was in the Hampden press box at the Celtic end the night he scored against Wales just prior to him going to Argentina. A brilliant goal. Check it out on YouTube. I think he got close to 40 goals that season. Ally McCleod chose not to play him in the disastrous World Cup campaign. 🤷‍♂️

Derek's career can be split into pre and post 1978. The change in his body shape from the end of 77/78 to the beginning of 78/79 was quite startling. His aversion to training was legendary. His love of the nightlife was also a big problem. You can get away with a lot as a youngster but when you get to your mid 20',s you need to work on your fitness and take care in regard to how you live your life off the park. Derek quite often, even during his peak years, would return (or not as the case may be) from the summer break less than fit and would start the season slowly. As the seasons progressed and his fitness under Jock Wallace's regime improved so did his performance. He was never the same player under Greig and to be honest the lion's share of the blame lies with DJ himself.

Derek is most certainly among the very best players to don the Royal Blue.
