Just not seeing it. First half was so poor. Agree that the second half was clearly better but what suggests we’ve made progress? Sima and Matondo (after a summer rebuild) as our two wingers/attacking threats is a bit grim to be honest.

Yup first half looked like we were almost intimidated? "Feeling them out" someone confident might say? It seemed like we needed half time to take a breath and see that we could hurt them and take chances. One might say that second half should be our normal, but if that's the norm we're building up to, I'll take it! Absolutely elated with the win. Side notes: - Tav omg some of the worst crosses and balls in I've seen yet. - matondo maybe too confident? That dismal long attempt that roofe clearly disapproved of... - how tf did roofe even get a foot on the ball that eventually went in? Hot diggity! - butland MOTM easily. - surprisingly didn't miss cantwell and raskin! (2nd half anyway) imagine us with them??

Rona Bluebell

Danced out the stadium. God, really really needed that tonight. Happy 😃

Beat a La Liga side for first time in 38 years. If you can’t take anything from it, nothing anyone can say will change it.

I’m so happy most of all for Michael Beale

Iain watson

Delighted for beale and the players 👏 just need to be patient while they find their feet

Doug Young

Really thought we looked like we were moving forward with this one. Thought Ben Davies was outstanding

Graham Jones

A bit unfair to say Beale is still one game from the sack. He did his job and won a game most people were expecting no more than a draw from. We should all be happy tonight. Well done Michael Beale.

Slightly patronising but I get it. Of course the result was great and hopefully we can build on it. Have we not all agreed though that we need something performance/tactics wise to give us belief in the manager? What is the style/tactics? Why do we go long more often than not? Why can’t we ever beat a press and rarely have an option of a pass into midfield? And why, after another massive rebuild, do we have forward players starting big European games for whom we have no idea if they will find a Rangers man with a pass or row Z? Apart from that, I think we were excellent.

I think when we play a side who are technically better than us, it’s about finding ways to win. Domestically? Absolutely. We need an identity and a style. But when you’re punching up, and against top 5 leagues we are, it’s get a result by hook or by crook. Particularly when the side is low on form and confidence.

Comment spot on Adam. From the latest tactics pod discussion the stand out difference seemed to be the willingness to press as a team. I think the biggest negative factor for Beale has been the lack of it up until now but tonight it was really noticeable. The work rate seemed to have come back and to me that’s what had been missing. The hope is he translates it to domestic games and doesn’t get dragged into over tinkering, that level of press and structure winning the ball back and moving it quickly needs to be our style again. Glad you picked up on Lammers as I thought what he gave us when he came on was excellent, busy and clever around the 18 yard line, I think he gets a really hard time but you can see he has something to offer if used properly.

Doug Young

Agree, Lammers looks technically excellent. He just lacks pace (thought Coisty comparing him to Hagi in commentary was interesting- I still think Hagi is more creative). To be fair to him, he has been played in weird places (he is no winger) and replacing Lawrence in a central 10ish position made him look much more comfortable. His technique for that shot was fabulous.

I like the forwards we brought in individually the challenge is getting the blend right but more importantly using them properly. Think we have been a bit lazy in terms of developing guys at times, when you buy a guy who is firing in a position or system we seem reluctant to use them in a way that’s tried and tested. I don’t personally think Lammers is particularly slow and he has shown some great bursts of pace to get into box over shorter distances, for me he has that technical ability of all Dutch players, good feet and his awareness is excellent, could see him working really well with Roofe or Denillo as his vision is excellent. All depends what you like in a player I guess I could see him getting goals if he gets game time and settles.
