Once again, Rangers are on the search for a new manager. We've seen many names linked with the job already, some legitimate shouts, others...less so. But who are the names that would make sense? Where might we want to look to find a manager that could be the answer to what we need? James and Simon go through a variety of different options, looking at both the advantages and disadvantages of some of those names.

You all know my thoughts

Piggott

Cheers guys a will listen to this tomorrow, a was hoping h and h done a pod on this

Simon H&H

Was a really enjoyable pod. Keep an eye also tomorrow morning for something else sort of related

John Smith

Appreciate your concern Simon but I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised 👍

John Smith

I’d love for him to bring Anderson Lopes over with him in the January window. Terrific footballer

chris smith

Clement or Jansen all day from that list

Al-WATP

John I wish I shared your positive thoughts but for me it would seem like yet another “easy” option and only considered because he played for us (albeit only a handful of games?) and the other obvious comparison.

John Smith

AI I completely understand mate. I have a dog in this fight because Muscat and Australian football in general is something I’ve got a lot of knowledge of so that’s why I’m desperate for this deal to be done. But yeah, if for example the South African multiple title winning manager was linked, I’d be the exact same. I say to this everyone but I’d really like you to check out some of his games. Hopefully it changes your mind but again every opinion is valid 👍

Al-WATP

Hi John - hope you are well brother - I’m more than happy to accept your knowledge on this. I genuinely know nothing about Muscat’s managerial career and remember very little of his Rangers career which was obviously quite short. Like every fan I’m just very anxious about our next move, I was ok (at best) with the Gio appointment and honestly not for the Beale appointment, and we just need to get this one right

John Smith

Really appreciate that AI 👍 again given the situation we’re in it’s completely understandable to be skeptical of any appointment. And look, I could be made to look very silly here but when I think there’s an opportunity to be taken and I have trust in someone that I deeply respect, I just feel I’ve got to get it out there that this is the way to go. Hope you’re all good as well brother 👍

KG

Henrik Rydstörm for me needs to be spoke about more to get his name out there

John McMillan

Good pod Muscat section aside. Muscat won more major honours in Japan and Australia's than Ange. So comments about 'lazy appointment' and 'ignoring the facts' seems a bit of a hot take to me. I'm not sure myself about Muscat to be fair, but a factually incorrect deconstruction of someone who might end up in the job isn't a good idea.

Spoon

I know next to nothing about Muscat but his win rate doesn’t seem impressive and no guarantees his brand of football translates to Scotland. Doubt we are shopping in the top tier market to be fair so no doubt there will need to be compromise in the appointment somewhere.

Ross Russell

Win rates in competitive leagues never look that great. Japan and Aus have had 5 or 6 league winners in the previous decade. There is a lack of knowledge I think on football this side of the world, and that's not unexpected when you have all that European football on your doorstep. The H&H team wrote of Postecoglou, the world cup previews had Aus finishing bottom of the group, its standard operating procedures.

Spoon

That would seem to highlight the difference in culture and expectations, if they are all much of a muchness and everyone plays pretty open football then it’s a world away from here. All about how it translates. I have no preferred candidate from the names touted but would see that as a risk we really don’t have to take when we could get someone who at least knows European football. His stint in Belgium certainly didn’t seem to go well but as I say we are shopping in a market that everyone will have pros and cons, hope we take our time and go for the best guy not just the quick or easy option.

Ross Russell

Neither do I to be fair. Only thing in my head is we need someone who can be a complete Bastard when needed. It's all been too touchy feely for a while now.

Harvey

Glasner top of the show and my absolute top choice- anyone think I'm being totally unrealistic?

David Innes

Yeah it’s a non starter unfortunately- 50/1 with the bookies behind Gerrard and Bielsa!

Leslie Hibbert

Just hope Bisgrove etc are taking as wide a scope as y'all. Nothing/nobody can be off the table, has to be thorough, has to be right

Gordon Mac

Genuinely worried about this one 😕

Ross

Re Muscat, when I read his managerial record on paper (which I appreciate never tells the full story) I’m left feeling underwhelmed. I do like the sound of him as a character though which is vitally important. Can those that know about him as a manager put the following in context that I’ve read elsewhere: With Melbourne Victory he won the league 2015 in his first full season…promising. But…record that season was 15 wins 8 draws 4 losses. So it’s clearly an unusual league where it’s worth noting you can fail to win almost half your games but still be champions. Season after he finished 6th, season after that 2nd but 17 points behind Sydney, then 4th and then 3rd. Overall win% 49%. Went to a Belgian club 2020 and got sacked after 6 months with a 13% win% record. Replaced AngeP at Yokohama and won league first season…promising. If I’m being potentially unfair is there any suspicion AngeP was a big part of the groundwork for that success ? Even if not, does winning one league title in Japan move someone with a mediocre to poor record in Australia and Belgium to first choice Rangers manager ? This year they sit 2nd. Overall win% 56%. Career win % 50%

Gallardo doesn't speak good English. But is a cracking shout for the job

AGS

He ain’t doing it: £6M per year I think the Overlord said

bluedan1873

Great pod lads! For me I'd love Gallardo although possibly unlikely to happen. There's a great article on the athletic about him that folks should seek out if interested. I was in Argentina when River got relegated i think in 2011 and Gallardo took over from the absolute bin fire they were and went onto to be their most successful coach in their history i believe. I really hope the club are at least making contact with his representatives.

John Smith

Hi Ross 👋 so on your first point, the A League is a really competitive tournament with the added bonus of play offs thrown which effectively acts as a secondary trophy (complicated I know lol) but what I would tell you is Ange significantly changed the squad at Victory when he arrived but he never could win those big games as he’d done at Brisbane. When he left for Australia, Kev took on the role in what his first job as a manager and completely transformed the team into a side that could get results in big games and won back to back titles. Many, myself included, feel that his Melbourne Victory side are the greatest Australian team ever. On the Belgian side of things, I think that was an example of Muskie being sold something that wasn’t there by the club hierarchy. He was going there expecting to be part of a project to build this team up and to be eventual title contenders. However, it turned out to be a nonsense. The club were a shambles with no genuine ambition and so I really feel he got lied to on that one. With regards to Yokohama, there’s no doubt Ange built a really good side there but they dropped off significantly the following season right before he went to Celtic. After he left, 6-7 key first team players left and Kev was given the job of taking the team back to where they were with the added pressure of now having to replace these guys. Not only were his signings successful but he managed to clinch second after they finished 13th and win the Japanese FA Cup. The following year, 9 more players left and again he had to rebuild and this time he won the league. This year once again the budget has been cut and yet he’s still got them in a title race with 5 games or so left. Remember Yokohama have only the 9th biggest budget in the country so to do what he’s done these past couple years really is nothing short of incredible. In conclusion, if he’s given some time and backing from the board, I think he’s THE man to take our club forward. Hope this helped 👍

Ross

Thanks John, much appreciated. That definitely puts the cold stats into some perspective and would make me feel much more confident in him. I still can’t say any of the options give me a warm fuzzy feeling but Muscat does sound like the kind of character that the fans would take to.

John Palmer

I like the idea of Marcelo Gallardo as a first choice. Muscat might be a decent 2nd option based on the fact they'd both Manage team with an Iron Fist which is what we've been missing of late. I'm a big fan of Allardyce and Warnock but unfortunately none of the 2 of them excite me as they both are at the wrong end of their Careers and Rangers can't be seen to just Paper ver the Cracks with journeyman Managers who won't revamp the Club or deliver us the Title and Cups. I'd back Rangers to splash the cash on high wages for the right appointment.

John Palmer

Rangers should offer 3.5 Million plus bonus structure such as a percentage of European Qualification money if he gets us into the Champs or Europa Lge to pump up wage prospects. Nothing like a good incentive to dangle infront of somebody to earn want they want and or more. Give him some coin for the Jan window with him tapping into the Sth American market. He could also offload some of our aging and bit players to help balance the books.

Latimer

Good informative pods guys 👍

John Davidson

Gallardo, Alardyce, Warnock. Utterly mental pod guys.

Calum Robertson

Excellent podcast guys. We need to make a real statement rather than just rinse and repeat. That means we need to go ALL OUT for Marcelo Gallardo. If this means new commercial deals to help fund his appointment then so be it. Bisgrove should handle that. We, the fans, need a manager who has proven success rather than another project. BTW, on the subject of Director of Football I still can´t believe we don´t have a new DOF in place. How important is it to have a DOF? Just look at the EPL https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/football/news/premier-league-clubs-sporting-directors-football/v7yvfrn4mltrpidvtc4co3t6

Nico

Seemed slightly dismissive of Muscat, which I found interesting. Surely his record stands up?

Simon H&H

Not for me mate. Purely opinion. The A League is an atrocious league. J League slightly better. We’ve also seen how the more recent signings from Asia across the road have struggled badly. There’s not many standouts left in that Yokohama team in particular imo

jason hart

Great round up lads and some names a lot of people haven't mentioned that probably should I'd just like to throw my bit in about muscat .. I've been in Oz for 20 years so followed his career here .. he captioned melb victory and has a successfull career then moved into the assistant role ... melb victory at the time was the biggest team in the a league ... muscat I think won one or 2 titles but he never really made headlines and has always been just an average manager in a very very average league .. to give you a bit of context .. just before muscat moved into management fat ange was destroying the league with Brisbane roar and had captain and player of the year Matt Mackay in his team .. remember him .. didn't think so .. played 3 games for us .. but my point is the standard of player in the a league is pretty bad .. the standard is bad and that's what muscat has been exposed to and in my opinion never really flourished .. I just wonder could he handle a superior player I have nothing against him but just don't think he's rangers class and too many are looking at ange then his career and thinking like for like ... ange was a very successful manager with international and world cup experience... this is something else Muscat's name has never come up in discussions for the national job .. if he was highly regarded you would think he would be in the mix In my opinion stay well away from this one as im certain well ba back in this position come may (or sooner) if we appoint him

Colin Gardner

If we get Gallardo ill sit in my pants at his first game! No chance we getting him however there are a few names on the list that could dona job for us.

jason hart

Listen to the big Sam podcast .. no tippy tappy.. big Sam seems a nice guys but I think he knows his role now .. mid season keep a team out of relegation type manager ... I know we're struggling atm but we need to build and move forward

David Clapperton

Good in-depth pod guys. For me there’s a massive elephant in the room that was sort of mentioned a few times during the pod that needs to be considered before any appointment is made. Are we bringing in a manager to suit the players we already have and have proven themselves not up to the job or do we bring in a manager with a style totally different and would have to be allowed to go back into the market and bring his own players in to play his way? Ultimately that will determine who the board go for in my opinion……well if there’s any joined up thinking anyway. I’m no convinced on that. 🤔

jason hart

John A league is a really competitive league ... ???? A league standard of football is terrible with mediocre players at best ... muscat inherited that good .. not great victory team

John Smith

I have to disagree Jason. A League may not be of as high quality but it is really competitive for the most part I would say. You will always get teams that tend do better than others like Victory and Sydney but Central Coast can always pull something out the bag now and again. I think Wellington have got a lot of potential at the moment. I suppose it’s a matter of opinion. It was clear to me that Ange wasn’t getting enough out of those players at the time he left. Did he play a part in the recruitment process ? Absolutely. But for me what Kevin Muscat did with that team in what his first step in to management was something to very much be lauded. But again that’s just my opinion 👍

Gary Q

Cracking, insightful pod - thanks both!

James Forrest

The engagement off the back of this has been excellent and I'm really thankful to those who have put their opinions forward. In particular, the guys who have seen some the teams managed by names mentioned up close and their own insight, both good and bad, has been superb value 👍
