John Smith

David, I tell you this now, you and everyone on here should be very excited about The Muscat. Trust me when I say Kev will bring Rock N Roll football back to Govan. I’m going to be really hurt if it doesn’t happen because I genuinely believe with all my heart that this is the man to transform and take our club in to the future

Craig Wilson

I hope you are right. I know nothing about him but my fear is we are going " well it worked for them. Let's get an Aussie manager from Japan and we're golden"

Paul

Us Seagulls supporters know exactly how you feel about the Lampard rumours David 🤣

John Smith

I totally get that it comes across that way Craig but I’ve been following Muskie since I was wee. He really is a tremendous football manager. People will point to his stint in Belgium but if you actually deep dive in to it there were a lot of things going on outwith his control. He actually took over Melbourne Victory where Ange was struggling and turned them in to a side that many people agree surpassed Postecoglou’s Brisbane Roar side

John Smith

And just to mention, Neil McCann has endorsed Kevin Muscat

John Smith

I’m getting a Muscat 56 jersey

Jamie Kirk

No more experiments. No more foreigners who underestimate the league. No more philosophies that need time to get used to. In the same way we should have brought in shankland over Dessers. A proven goal scorer in our league. Bring in a proven scottish manager who has paid his dues and deserves the step up. Derek mcinnes is the man. He turned it down previously because rangers didn’t want his backroom staff. Also we were more of a joke then as we are now. Mcinnes would have us organised and well drilled and with the talented players we have they will make things happen. Souness, smith, McLeish and Gerrard had done far less with their managerial careers than mcinnes has done.

KennyY

No more Rangers men please. Let’s have a proper change of direction

SDF

ABL - Anyone but Lampard. Well except McInnes.

Heart and Hand

Yup, not going to lie about it. Don’t think much of his record, and that’s from someone who loved him as a player.

Craig

Don’t fancy Muscat or Lampard but if one of them get appointed they will get my full support.

Gregg

Fuck no. This is a worse shout than my mate suggesting Steven Robinson “cos he knows the league”. McInnes is a shitebag

Graham Roy

I’m not excited by Muscat and Lampard is a No…..however I wanted Gio and Beale so maybe I’m not exactly the best person to pick next manager!

Russ

BTW, if the B teams had been in the lower leagues for the last 10 years we'd be flapping a lot less now imo. It doesn't always work out but the transition from B team coach in the respective domestic leagues second division to Head Coach of the senior side can be pretty seemless. Rangers bad though.

Ross Whitehead

If Lampard is named manager he will get none of my support. Woeful. Don't fancy McInnes either.

David

What is so good about him exactly? He has been allowed to run down his contract and is second in the league. He walks into teams fat Ange has built. Has he ever built his own team and won titles and cups consistently?

Gregg

Names are very uninspiring - not sure who I’d be inspired by right now. Anyone but some of the suggested spl/ champ hoof the baw 4-4-2 dinosaurs

John Smith

Ange was struggling badly when he left Melbourne Victory to take the Australia job. Kev managed to take that group of players to back to back A League titles within a couple of months of working with them. Japanese football fans say his Yokohama side are a vast improvement on Ange’s side. Yokohama are not a club with a lot of money and they substantially slashed Kev’s budget this season. Given that there still in the title race is rather remarkable. He actually just won a couple of hours ago against Shandong Taishan in the Asian Champions League. Shandong are the cream of the crop of Chinese football with vastly more cash than Yokohama and they were outthought and outplayed. I watched the Victory religiously when Muskie was the gaffer and even then I was willing Rangers on to give him the job. I’m just totally convinced he’s the one and it’s a hill I’m more than willing to die on

Stephen Grant

Can’t be Lampard , shouldn’t be McInnes , don’t know enough about Muscat, big decisions to be made by people with more sense than me , hopefully

Jamie Kirk

What had Souness, smith, McLeish and Gerrard done? It’s not all about what you’ve done, yet if that is what your looking for, mcinnes has done more than them before they were rangers managers. That’s my point. He over achieves with limited players and budgets. Give him better players and a better budget and put him in the league he knows so well with a club he knows so well.

Graeme Brown

Afternoon Kevin… (Just kidding mate 😉 Interesting to have a more detailed perspective on him)

James Cameron

Why is a guy who knows nothing about football leading the search for a football manager this is ending in absolutely fucking disaster again

John Smith

🤣 appreciate that Graeme and I understand the skeptics and that I’ll not be able to persuade everyone but this is a guy who I’ve followed for a long time and that I totally and completely believe in

Adam

Clement is the obvious candidate. Everyone else comes with caveats divorced from footballing matters.

Heart and Hand

He doesn’t overachieve though does he? When he had 2nd/3rd best budget at Aberdeen he finished 2nd or 3rd. At Killie they finished 10th. You want us to appoint a manager who finished 10th with a bigger budget than Livvy?

stephen

This is the most important message in here ⬆️⬆️⬆️

Spoon

Quite a depressing list to be honest, really don’t fancy Muscat as he seems like an Aussie Beale and I hate the idea of ‘following’ them in anything. Think the lack of characters in the list is noticeable, appreciate there’s a fine line being character and caricature but would like someone with a bit of gravitas and back to basics attitude. From the list so far not a lot of that on there but early yet. If we aren’t going UK then I hope we stay in Western Europe as I think the style played in adjacent leagues probably translates better to our competitions and players.

Colin Gardner

Fair play John. Lots sating they don't fancy him without actually knowing any indepth reasons against him. He is certainly not a project manager as he has been managing for a few years. If we get him and he is successful then a lot of bears in here will owe you a pint!😂😂😂

Colin Gardner

Quite depressing reading that every man named as a possible target is shite or not good enough. We really are a strange fanbase at times.

Robert White

Has to be a Rangers man or Gerrard. The only non Rangers man that's won anything in our history without outspending them by double. Advocaat, I could have managed that team.

Jamie Kirk

My point i am trying to make is not about “what has mcinnes done” I am trying to remind people that he’s done more than Souness, Smith, McLeish and Gerrard did before they became rangers managers and brought us success. A bad season with killie is not going to define him. For me, he’s got more credit in the bank as a proven scottish manager than Souness, smith, McLeish and Gerrard did. That’s my point. If your logic was to always take a manager on their achievements then we would never have given Souness, smith, McLeish or Gerrard the jobs. For me Mcinnes has the know how of the league, the know how of the club, the fans, and what’s expected to be successful here. He’s played under Walter and played alongside born winners in the 9 in a row team. He’s taken points of the old firm with lesser teams. I think it’s his time. Do I think the board will give him an opportunity like previous boards gave far less experienced managers who went on to be a success for us? No I don’t think they will. I expect another European or English Pep guardiola wannabe who will follow the trendy football model of possession and trying to walk the ball in the back of the net. I expect someone that will under estimate the league (Gerrard did this initially) and who will not get enough time to imprint his ideology and “sign his own players”. Just like shankland, who we should have signed mcinnes doesn’t need to bed in. Doesn’t need to adapt to the environment. It’s a boring one but the one the club needs right now. How boring was the McLeish appointment. Got 3rd with Motherwell and hibs. No trophies. Yet he had the know how to be domestically successful. We need to forget Europe and focus solely on our bread and butter. The league. Scottish football. Anything on top on Europe is a bonus and free hit.

John Smith

Couldn’t agree more Colin 😂 🍻 it’s crazy to me that a guy with 3 league titles and a great style of football is being knocked back by some for a guys who don’t even have a cup and play long ball. But everyone is entitled to their point of view 👍

Simon H&H

Who else is there lads? The guy is literally doing his job. It’s no different to when Dave King headhunted Stevie G

Heart and Hand

It doesn’t add up at all to me. Bring in an average manager, who has been proven to be average, to manage us because he knows the league? His record v Celtic with Aberdeen? Who shat the job once before? Nah, not for me. McInnes will absolutely get us being dull, guaranteed 2nd and maybe an occasional cup, no doubt. But we surely have to be looking bigger than that.

Chris Macfarlane

Andrew Dickson has just been appointed finance director at my work 🫣

Russ

Also, John mate - your Muscat propaganda is starting to wear me down a wee bit ha!

Brian Rae

It cannot be Lampard. I'd be extremely disappointed and somewhat concerned if he's even spoken to.

Lynsey Roddy

I’ll second the no to Muscat. He’s not the guy, just no. If Lampard gets the job I’m done as he’s absolutely stinking at managing a team, ask Everton!

Jock Paterson

No director of football/ sporting director employed first before a manager?

chris smith

Lampard? God preserve us ….

Jamie Kirk

Maybe your right. I felt McLeish was a dull appointment. He proved to be a success. That’s all I’m saying. I don’t think we will get mcinnes anyway so we will likely never know. Whoever we get I just want to see us organised and set up as a unit. Watching Beale was like watching 5s. “Hybrid players” he called it. Just seemed like we had no structure. Anyway see you at Ibrox David, I sit just below the press section so often see you. Great podcast and always love your daily input. 🇬🇧

Tamus

Any new manager needs to do what Souness did to Derek Johnstone when he arrived

Heart and Hand

Aye I don’t want anymore ‘hybrid players’, press conference bollocks etc. Give me football I can believe in and take us forward!

Rona Bluebell

Oh John. When I opened the comments I thought ‘I bet it’s all John Smith saying Muscat muscat muscat’. And it is! 😂

Rona Bluebell

Just googled him. He’s a dead ringer for the actor Mark Strong. I’m taking that as a positive 😜

Spoon

Rather have him than some of the others mentioned but I can see the limitations. I’m also done with the ‘exciting coach’, we play in a fairly industrial league against solid but limited teams let’s get back basics as with our budget we should be able to put out a better player in each position than our opponents. Would like to see effort, hard work in games and a bit of healthy contempt come back. We have been missing an edge for some time even Gerrard was searching for that final bit of ruthlessness and didn’t get it but it’s what the other mob have and we need. The modern football desire for everyone to be like Pep or Klopp doesn’t translate to us up here. We are in danger of being end of era Aberdeen from the 80s if we don’t wake up.

Kris

Our fan base is on the main a group of people who shout loudly about something they have no idea about!

Colin Mathie

McInnes/Lampard, absolutely not.

Andrew Whiteside

Of those mentioned Muscat appears to be the best option. He played in British football most of his Career. 10 years management experience and won titles and from what I have read plays an exciting brand of football. I also would not like to pick a fight with him.

Angus Mackay

it was worth tuning into this just to hear Gallardo finally pronounced properly after two days of brutality. I knew we could count on you, Davie.

Ryan Stewart

Bit of a mixed bag the options mooted so far. Of the names going around I think Philipe Clement would be my preferred candidate at this point. Followed by Pascal Jansen and Kevin Muscat. Frank Lampard, Derek McInnes and Chris Wilder absolute non starters imo. Seems to be a fair bit of noise around Lampard which is concerning as he’s the exact type I can imagine this board going for

maccalsa

Not sure where W 1 D 2 L 0 constitutes struggling? That was Ange's record when Muscat took over. Victory had had a revolving door of 4 managers before Muscat took charge, he was the assistant to all of them. At St trudien, he appeared to get a bum deal, but the only person I can find who on record talked up the 2/14/0 record was the ceo of the management agency that placed him there. At yokohama he took charge of a team who had finished 2nd the season before and had actually won the title as recently as 2019. I can find lots of reports assigning the style to Ange as much as Muscat, it depends what you read. I'm not saying he would be a good or bad manager, but can we just temper expectations a bit and not elevate him to something we don't know he is yet.

John Smith

What I would say is that in big games, like the playoffs, Ange failed. Muscat changed that. With regards to Belgium, of course it’s on his record but I really don’t think you can take much from that given as you said things that were going on in the background. I suppose it’s a matter of opinion when it comes to Yokohama. I don’t watch the J League as closely as the A League but I do try to see them as often as possible and I do catch their fixtures in the Asian Champions League and have myself noticed a drastic improvement from compared to when Ange was there in that particular tournament. And I completely agree, I can’t sit here and say that everything is going to be Rosie. But going by my gut instinct and from what I’ve watched him do overall managerially, there isn’t one ounce of doubt I have at all that Kevin Muscat will bring success to Rangers Football Club

Joe reddington

Is there any truth in the rumour that the club has spoken to Frank Lampard ?

Al-WATP

Muscat would never be anywhere near discussion if he hadn’t played for us and the “Ange factor”. From what I’ve heard i don’t think his team is on a great run of results either now. We can’t keep going for the easy option like we did with Gio and Beale and need to actually spend time undertaking a full and proper process. The options don’t need to be “Rangers men”, that means nothing. We need a manager that will excite the fans playing attacking high pressing football, not just talking about it. It’s that simple. I don’t know who the right man is but the Muscat chat doesn’t fill me with optimism, and Lampard just no

David Innes

His odds are certainly coming in (appreciate that doesn’t mean much at this stage) - very worrying if true. He would be a disaster

David Innes

I could just about live with McInnes if it was a 1 year rolling contract. If it’s Lampard I’ll be outside Ibrox with a pitch fork

Heart and Hand

Apparently I’m wrong though - it’s Ga-shardo! I was always under the impression that double L in Hispanic languages was ‘Y’ but I was wrong!

Gordon Millar

I simply ask that we get the most experienced/successful manager that we can afford! He needs to be strong enough to clear out the serial losers, install belief in players and play football that we want go and watch. In essence a manager who commands respect! Not sure any on that list will deliver on my demands!......This is the most important job at the club, I hope we recruit with that mindset....

Ryan Stewart

The fact he played for us probably does play a part, but surely part of the reason he would be considered is also because he appears to be a good manager and has medals to back it up. If he had been a disaster as a manager no one would care if he was an ex player or not, he just simply wouldn’t be considered.

David

He is second in the league with 4 games to play. Recent results not been great either. It's a no from me.

John Smith

To be fair David, it’s an achievement that he’s even got them challenging for the title given they have the 9th biggest budget in the league. But once again, totally respect your opinion mate 👍

Angus Mackay

It definitely is Y for the most part. That's the proper pronunciation for the Lamborghini supercar and also the way the most famous Gallardo of all is pronounced - Miguel Ángel Félix. Is his is different, perhaps it's a Argentinian thing.

Jamie Kirk

Hibs were 9th when McLeish took over at Rangers. Hibs had won 1 game in 9. He went on to win 5 trophies. Don’t understand the snobbery against a manager like Mcinnes.

Heart and Hand

Because I want Rangers to have the best we can and his career has been very average. He’s done nothing to suggest he won’t be very average with us. Also his brand of football is renowned for making your eyes bleed.

Adam

Knocked us back. Sacked by Aberdeen. A bawhair away from missing promotion with Killie the season they went up via the play offs. Nearly relegated them last season. That reads like success to you?

Graham Jones

Nobody will therow him to the wolves in the next two games, but he has to be judged the same as every single other manager, including Beale. That’s just fair. If he wins the next two games he’ll be lauded by some people for it, so they need to hold him to the same standards across the board. Otherwise, you’re behaving like a hypocrite. Also, you can;t say Beale what he deserved and had to go and that the players were to be lame in the same sentence. It sounds like a contradiction. Whoever comes in will need to be strong with this board, otherwise we’ll be looking for a new manager before the season is out. That doesn’t mean being unreasonable when ti comes to transfer budgets, but will stand up and use the media to send a message to the board about the lack of funds being suggested. The board have to take responsibility along with Beale in my mind, because I get the suspicion the budget got cut, or they said one thing and then suggested they meant that was for wages as well. That’s an old trick in football, and they all know it in boardrooms.

Jamie Kirk

It does not. However. McLeish came to us when his hibs team were 9th. Does that read like success? McLeish won 5 titles with us.

Spoon

Weirder still as a fan base we are always telling each other what to think or what’s acceptable. This having freely formed opinions is gash we should all toe the party line and someone can blow a whistle when they decide we are allowed to complain, but only if your qualified obviously. Isn’t it ok to have a view and put it forward without the staunch thought police deciding if it’s valid or not ? Much rather hear from 100 people I disagree with than everyone be told how to support the club or tell anyone else what to think. It’s like the 1984 loyal sometimes….what’s the point of having discussion pods, boards and forums if you can’t discuss. Never a need for abuse but surely nobody needs derided or slated for honesty if they are delighted with something unpopular or concerned with something popular.

Adam

Hibs had literally just been promoted that season. McLeish didn't turn around and humiliate the club by knocking us back. Eck jumped at the chance. McInnes shat out of it, stayed in his comfy job in Aberdeen until he got the sack there. You can't compare the two of them. One had ambition and the other is shitebag.

Jamie Kirk

It was my undertaking mcinnes wanted to take his assistant Docherty and rangers didn’t want the backroom team. So mcinnes rejected the move. You also have to remember we were more of a joke then than we are now. So maybe for professional reasons he didn’t think the timing was right.

Jamie Kirk

He won a cup. Souness, smith, McLeish and Gerrard hadnt won a cup we managers before coming to rangers

Colin Gardner

100% mate I do agree with a healthy discussion and opinions won't always be the same. I think it all boils down to we as a fanbase see no light at the end of the tunnel. Every name linked is not good enough. Put it down to snobbery or being deluded as to who we can attract but we need to employ someone. We simply can't keep sacking managers every year because we lose a few games. It's mental. Gerrard is the only manager in recent times to get a bit of time simply because of who he is. Sometimes you need to go back to go forward so whoever we appoint, he must be given breathing space to build his team and not be given the ultimatum of winning the league in his first season.

Spoon

All valid stuff mate. Everyone is frustrated, we are all worried that the change will be the wrong one, we all have different expectations of the new manager and most importantly we are all scarred. I love the views on here being different and totally appreciate people making me think about things from a different perspective but there’s a difference between saying what you feel or think to telling others that their not valid or they have an agenda if they don’t fall in line. I think we have lost a realistic appraisal of where we are in the food chain and it leads to some unrealistic expectations on play, players and managers. Rangers can’t simultaneously be a club that wins and demands the best but also is happy with close to 12 barren seasons so it’s unlikely to change unless we drift off into mediocrity and return to the early 80s. The reality is though this is a game of passions and not always logic, stats can be up or down and we all go on gut feeling or sometimes first impressions. There will automatically be some who don’t want the new guy whoever it is as they did their research and just didn’t fancy them, or they had a different candidate they really wanted or they just didn’t like their face! The majority however will get behind a vision that’s translating onto the pitch. Big decisions ahead and honestly I wouldn’t want to be the board having to shop in this market with a fan base already testy and with little tolerance left. The new guy, for me, won’t be responsible for the mood but he will have to do something big early to win people over and buy time regardless of who it is. I get the sentiment that we can’t change a manager every season but that doesn’t work if we have gone with the wrong one or they are failing, we also can’t just keep a guy who’s not delivering (or doesn’t look like he can deliver) just because we are scared of sacking another gaffer. We need some hope back to get behind. Appreciate the discussion bud, all the best.

Adam

But he was also sacked by Aberdeen and he knocked us back, why should we give him a second go at it? What has he done in the last 5 years that points to him being a successful Rangers manager? He's an ambitionless hack. He's not a Rangers manager. You're settling for mediocrity by even entertaining the idea of appointing him.

Jamie Kirk

He wanted his assistant Doherty and members of his backroom staff to come with him. Rangers didn’t want that. So he stayed loyal to his assistant and staff and didn’t go. I commend that. Also. Rangers were in disarray post Pedro. We had to get a guy looking for his first managerial job coz no manager would touch us. Graeme Souness had never been a manager before he was ours. Walter smith was an assistant. McLeish had hibs promoted and hibs were 9th after 9 games when we signed him. Gerard had no managerial experience. Mcinness had experience. He’s won a cup. He’s been promoted. So already he’s more qualified than all of the above mentioned before they came to rangers. He’s most compatible to Alex McLeish. A guy who knew how to be effective in the domestic game. Which is exactly where we should be focusing. Getting our feet back under the domestic table. That’s our bread and butter. Solidify domestic success. Then Europe can follow. Mcinnes has played in Europe under Walter. He was part of the 9 in a row team. I’m not sayjng he’s ideal but he ticks the most boxes. I believe we will end up with another pep wannabe who will over play, over pass, be over patient and under estimate the league. Another risk and another manager who has no idea about the league or expectation. Just answer me this - How can you write off Mcinnes when McLeish came in and won 5 trophies. Mcinnes has achieved more than McLeish did before he came to rangers.
