It is depressing how slow we are. No one fears us and most think they can get something as we hide and collapse easily. I’m not saying anything new so I’ll say another obvious- it’s only October!!!

William George Bell

A great analysis of the difficulties a new manager will face boys. With this squad he’ll need all our support.

Steffen McAndrew

Whoever the new manager is will have a positive impact early on....SURELY! If they're given a style of play and instructhat they understand and enjoy, I think a lots of the current squad could improve. I live in hope.

Rona Bluebell

Oh god John. If we sign him and it goes wrong, you’ll be hunted down by folk on here with pitchforks 😂

AmoRangers

Bald and balder, the two managerial candidates. So very unstruthian. The millennials have won. Long live long locks.

Jim McCutcheon

Hard o thinking 😁, enjoy the all the pods guys 👍

Jamie Kirk

Agree with David, disagree with Colin

Angus Mackay

My Vietnam. Perfectly succinct summary, Martyn, thank you.

I’m with Davey I think a new manager could get something out of this squad. Not a league win but enough to get us on board again.

Regards to Lundstram slowing thins down. I know it won’t be a popular opinion but it doesn’t do him any favours Goldson taking 4 or 5 touches every time the ball comes to him before he gives it to Lundstram. Lundstram was arguably MOTM in the 3 or 4 game’s previous to the Aberdeen game. It boils my piss the time Goldson spends on the ball before moving it on. The pedestrian play starts with him. Even Raskin has gone backwards since last season because the central midfielders wait so long on the ball by the time they receive it the only real option they have is to give it back.

I think there's the basis of a quick moving midfield there. Cantwell, Raskin and Cifuentes are all capable of moving the ball quickly and moving into space quickly enough. I would imagine that Dowell will be as well, if he's ever fit. The issues arise when we bog down the midfield with Lundstram and/or Jack who are both painfully slow at moving the ball on. Also, us instructing Raskin to essentially be the sitting midfielder in our midfield was madness from Beale, he's a different player in the final third, we've seen glimpses of it. I think a lot of the ponderous pace of play has been down to coaching, Gio and Beale were both pretty reserved and obsessed with 'owning the pitch' which at times amounted to boring the opposition into submission. The biggest issue is our attack imo. We've got three/four strikers none of which are particularly pacey. Two of which have started horrendously, one who's perma crocked and one who literally had his face re-adjusted last month. Sima and Matondo are the only pace we have up top and one of them is currently injured. Is there a B Team winger with the pace to do it? Could we utilise Sterling as a winger until January? He played there as a youth at Chelsea. It's a puzzle for any new manager coming in. Defence needs almost entirely rebuilt. Yilmaz appears to be made of tissue paper, Tav's lost a half yard of pace, injury has caught up with Goldson, neither of Davies or Souttar fill me with any confidence, Borna's persona non grata amongst the majority of the fans and King/Yfeko are both raw. Balogun was poor against Morton, but standout poor and looked finished.

Unless that lot across the City hit the Skids and we hit our stride under our New Manager, the League is already beyond us. The focus now should be claiming that Lge Cup, stay in Europe and maintain a firm grip on 2nd (Nearly spewed saying that).

Thanks for the pod David & Martyn. Think you've covered all the issues with that. I know emotions have been running high, and most still are, but it was nice to hear your more analytical and reasoned views on this and can't disagree with anything said. A few thoughts to add though. I think maybe our 'leadership group' has got a bit too powerful for our good, like Lampard, Terry & Co at Chelsea. Plus they are too influential dictating the (very poor) tempo on the field. As its said 'once they go over the white line....' !! Shame in the midst of all the furore Sima is viewed as a bit 'Meh! Ok.' His goal return and effort deserve far more credit. He's a bit scrappy, unpredictable. Ted McMinn? Nacho Novo? Summer signings shouldn't be totally written off yet; Dowell looked like he could do a job, maybe instead of Lundstrum. Sterling has shown potential, Tav replacement. Lammers has scored, assisted or had key contributions to goals. R de Boer's opinion of Dessers seems pretty accurate but he looked far more comfortable paired with Danilo. Cifuentes we've seen in flashes, increasingly so. Add to the mix, Lawrence, Cantwell and vast improvement with Raskin back in the side.. Remember winter break 21-22? Us 6pts clear, that lot feigning injuries to postpone OF fixture. We all remember the result in Feb 22 though and how it changed the dynamics of the title race. Their current lot aren't great. Maybe we shouldn't be writing ourselves off just yet!

Spot on Liam. Anyone who sits near me in the Govan Rear must get fed up with me shouting at our centre backs, “Step in, f*+^*+* step in. They constantly have 15/20 yards of space in front of them but steadfastly refuse to step out from the back line. Constantly play the safe, square pass out wide or recycle the ball across the back 4. Or the other option, launch the diagonal. 🤯 Infuriating. No wonder the midfield are struggling.

Gregg

Sterling as a winger. He’s looked fairly limited in an attacking sense as a full back. From what I’ve seen that is a complete non starter - so far he’s not looked an upgrade on Devine who I think has been harshly treated.

Gregg

The pedestrian play is also caused by the lack of movement in midfield/ attack. We are very static.
