It still pisses him off to this day that he never got to play against Celtic 😂 I do know for a fact that he still watches Rangers. I was listening to a podcast with Neil McCann and he said that in training, even amongst the likes of Amo, Barry, De Boer etc. he managed to push them further every day. He said he was a great footballer with a great football IQ. Why that never translated on to the field I’m really not sure. I think probably it was down to the fact that he had that moment of madness in him. Totally different attitude as a coach though. And don’t you worry Andy, you’ll be on that Muscat Express soon enough 😎

Mark

RE McInnes - just because we haven't been doing the basics correctly doesn't mean that what we need is a basic manager. Look at his CV (with him in his fifties now) to se what his level is.

Trev @JimmyBell_Loyal

Andy, Tav is dug meat when it comes to defending. You’re talking about a tweak, why not stick him at right mid then?? Attacking he’s decent so stick him there.

AC_55

Cammy - I'm a Muscateer (awful patter sorry), for me it's not about the boot up the arse for the team. In fact quite to the contrary - apparently he's calmed as a manager. For me it's about the attacking football, winning leagues with a smaller budget.

John Smith

Here here AC. The Muscateers is officially the name of our movement 👍🇦🇺

The listener who made the point about the senior players for me is spot on. I dont think the suggestion is that they haven’t or can’t contribute but I would say that they seem to hold too much sway and in the time the core have been there we are always told how much influence they have during a period of trophy failure, for me ignoring the constant in the equation is the problem. This group have shown a rollercoaster mentality, simultaneously able to deliver great results but at the same time there is the underlying self pity mode they retreat into always present. I am firmly of the belief the core group took the hump with GIo and got him sacked and while Andy might be right that they didn’t quite down tools for Beale he made it clear (as SG and GVB did previously) they weren’t doing what he asked of them. IF as we are led to believe the guys like Tav, Goldson, Jack, Lundstrum etc are so influential and are leaders on and off the park then they must take the praise and criticism in equal measure when things aren’t going well. With the best will in the world its easy to lead when things are easy proper leaders emerge when the chips are down and change things by taking responsibility they dont do what we see our ‘senior’ guys all too often which is point at others, not do their own jobs and look for excuses. That’s not leadership and it must leech into the psyche of the group especially if the manger backs guys with those traits and holds them up as the examples of what he wants. I would be very interested to hear Beale speak now about his boys that he protected and defended and see if he feels how he used to about them. Ultimately David is spot on, what are you doing for me now? As a club our desperation to cling to players is bizarre, the fans can be excused as they have no influence but the coaching teams and boards recently seem unable to actually left people leave and its a contributor to this staleness and boredom with the team thats underlying the turmoil. When you have a run of season like we had I dont think its out there to review the performance and mentality of the group to identify weaknesses or issues, if Tav had been a trophy winning captain year on year he would have got praise for it, the opposite is true he has been part of a pretty unsuccessful (bar 1 league and a Euro final) spell of over 5 years he can’t escape critique. I personally just dont think its his personality to be a leader, I think he rightly focuses on himself and his own game which doesnt leave much in terms of being a leader on the pitch.

Gregg

We don’t really play a right mid - this has been suggested for long and weary and it just doesn’t work. Totally changes how you receive the ball when you’re further forward and it’s a totally different skill set.

Gregg

Other than leading by example - I don’t really get what captains do in modern football. When it’s brought up people typically talk about Keane, Viera etc. just don’t see it nowadays at all

Colin McPherson

Loved the hamper as always however the audio was really low and struggled to hear unless turned up higher than I would have any other show on the network.

Trev @JimmyBell_Loyal

What else do we do with Tav then? 🤷‍♂️ I’m cool with dropping him but it won’t happen and half the support wouldn’t like it

Phileas Fogg 55

I'll listen to anything Big Andy is on 😂. No offence Hoggy and Cammy.

Gregg

If you think he’s no longer good enough at right back - I don’t think you shoe horn him into another position. He’s a right back. Like andy, I don’t think he is one of the main issues whilst acknowledging he hasn’t been at his best and is likely to decline physically going forward. Sterling hasn’t shown he’s up to taking the spot - he looks limited in attack - I’d argue Devine looked more ready last year. For the way we play our full backs are equally as important in attack than defence, perhaps even more so. The young lads have opportunities every day to show the manager they are - as yet it’s not happened.

I'd like to see tav in the lundstrum roll, he's got better legs and ability. It's worth a try at least.

Gregg

I’d rather give Bailey Rice a go there instead. Might work. Think it’s been tried the odd time

George Higgins

Why wait for a DOF until next Summer. If the right guy can be got then go for him asap. No point in waiting until a random future date.

Andy McGowan

Well that's the point, it needs to be the right guy, and if we need to wait to summer then so be it. The long term needs to trump the shirt term when making this appointment

George Higgins

Agree. My point is don’t set random dates. Move when we have identified the right candidate. Whether that’s sooner rather than later will be down to availability .

Speaking about a core of players not a captain. Beale and SG both spoke about the influence of the senior players group, the leaders with no armbands so really not about captains. It’s about a core who set the tone in squad, these days I imagine that involves a huge amount of welfare stuff, being the guy who gives advice and guidance, who gives the wider group a few up and on match days gives direction on the field, you only have to watch a game to see who ch players continually throw up their hands and point when something goes wrong. If you genuinely don’t get the point of a group of seasoned, older professionals having a large influence on attitude, confidence and application then I don’t think anyone explains it. Most places I have worked have a group of senior people who tell you how things are done and the expectation and standards, we have had a core of guys in that mould (the guys I mentioned) who manager have spoken about as their lieutenants or leaders or captains without armbands, their words, to me this group have been there too long and while have all given service they haven’t led the way a team needs to consistently and always are likely to shout and point at others more than take ownership and drive colleagues on. Tav is the obvious one who attracts more flak but the idea a captain does nothing doesn’t attack up when you hear our own players refer to his influence in settling new players etc. I like Tav, no real issue with him being captain if the players like him but the record books tell you how successful his spell at club has been and his medal haul, same applies to the others Goldson, Lundstrum, Jack, Borna for example. A core who have under achieved more than they have delivered in my own opinion.

LD

The new mic cost three figures, of course it did, but where was the decimal point? 😉

Gregg

Interesting points - whilst I still think we fetishise the captain in the UK your other points are not without some merit. You would think players who are elite - probably in the 0.001% who make it at the level they are at - would have the mindset to drive themselves forward. Some of the older pros referenced do seem to be ones that are always available and seem to look after themselves/ train well (from what we know). Are we just a fed up of the same faces? Have we failed to get better players around some of our ‘leadership’ group who have typically been the better performers in the squad.

Spoon

I think all of the above can be true simultaneously and at different times. We have seen captains in our league drag their teams by force of will through games and we don’t seem to have that type of character. Your right to highlight personal responsibility and the care some take of themselves but a leader instills this in others and helps them to be their best or when necessary asks them to give more when levels drop. Our senior guys don’t do that for me often enough. I guess if captains and senior players didn’t matter teams wouldn’t have them and managers wouldn’t refer to them. From my own youth in the army the senior guys absolutely set the standards and expectations, you wanted to be them and didn’t want to let them or the team down. I don’t know that ethos is in our ranks. A lot seem to see their own output as all that matters and I would argue in doing my bit what they do isn’t my concern, that’s it a great team dynamic to me. One thing we can’t measure is what we could have done with more of that winning mentality and killer instinct, a few players with the right chops can make all the difference to a team and for me that’s what you want from your seniors / captain. Drive, standards and a desire to win we don’t really have proven winners and sadly too many in the squad seem ok with being that type of guy, solid, dependable but not pushing themselves or others to the next level.

Gregg

All about perception I suppose - I can look back to Barry Ferguson for example. Did he drag us through games - absolutely. Was he a good captain? That’s debatable - some of his ex team mates suggest he was a bully and he was stripped of the thing twice. But he won - so do we care. Would be interested to know who you think - in last 5 years - has dragged teams through games? I just don’t see it if I’m honest but interesting debate. I think the victor sets the narrative in these instances

Spoon

Think looking close to home and our rivals shows you there are guys who both play like winners but ask those around to buy in and do likewise. Setting a tone both on and off the field has been something McGregor has done for then consistently. From his words at start of game to his interviews I think you see a guy who lets his team mates know what he expects and delivers himself. Guys like Shinnie recently show how a captain can influence a single game, do his own bit and manage officials just through a desire to get his teams win. Some of it is just how you carry yourself. Btw I like Tav as a player, you know I like stats and he absolutely delivers but not sure he is the personality type that others are desperate to follow. Purely my own opinion based on what I see and hear from him. The recent presser pre Euro game post Beale sacking to me points to a guy who doesn’t really get (or doesn’t convey) the tone of a situation. It’s just my opinion and totally get those who are more pro or less enamoured with Tav. To me he’s a solid player with a phenomenal output but he doesn’t inspire and that covers the he other guys I mentioned. They also, for all their good points have some long standing deep flaws in their games we can’t pretend aren’t there. The modern way is a guy is great or gash, I tend to get annoyed when a guy is written off OR over hyped as I think the truth is somewhere in the middle more often than not.

Does every question get a pint at the live show? If so I’ve got 12 ready

Gregg

Interesting viewpoints and well thought out. My view is a wee bit different - in that McGregor for example is a good captain because he is Celtic’s best player and he plays in a position where he can be involved a lot. I don’t think he is particularly inspiring in the way he speaks or comes across - but that’s only seeing very limited chat from him. For me it’s to the victor the spoils - if you win everything is seen as great. When it’s not always the case. Always liked Shinnie as a player as an aside.

And that’s the crux…..our mob don’t have the medals and they are the consistent factor in the recent years. We bring in guys who light the place up initially then seem to get dragged into our flat one paced dirge….given the managers and coaches change who sets that one or does that to them ? The constant is the often referenced senior players. I’m not an expert and have zero insight so I could be totally wrong but our guys constantly apologising and giving generic bounce back, do better, reaction speeches much leech into the mindset of the squad. Some of these guys have had mega doings by teams and must carry scars, only special guys are down but can get back up and not sure we see that from our guys. Don’t want to talk about them particularly but a bad result for them in Europe for example doesn’t seem to hang over into their next game where they expect to win, McGregor when interviewed to me speaks on the front foot where Tav is always on the back foot, Goldson and Lundstrum similar. Jack is more bullish but his fitness and availability probably goes against how often he is around the team. I don’t have an answer bud only a view point. Our big players don’t, for me at least inspire me or give me belief they believe if that makes sense ? I think that must filter through to others. My own view is you see guys come in like Raskin recently, explode into the side then quickly he’s back to being unable to pass 10 yards and looks far less effective. I think some of it is the dynamics of the squad and who people look to for leadership which brings us back to who we have in terms of personality. I’m not trying to convince you and I take your point I just don’t think it’s a coincidence, and if I was diagnosing a ‘fault’ you look at what might be causing it and eliminate things, I can’t help but feel the guys who have been consistently part of a team that fails more often than it succeeds in terms of trophies and a style that always defaults back to slow over played passing among the same guys can’t be a coincidence. Neither can our constant need to react that only lasts about 4 games then we need another. It’s Groundhog Day across a lot of managers….who is the constant ?

Ian Milne

I’ve said this numerous always too quiet and thats on a loud speaker or in the car.
