Philipe Clement is formally unveiled today with a huge job on his hands to turn things around at Ibrox. It is not an unusual scenario of course, with many football managers having to sort out a mid-season mess. How do they go about it? What needs to be done soon? What has to wait? Martyn is joined by Ally and Adam to discuss the Rangers situation in particular but some general principles too.

Looking forward to this one. 👍👍

David summed it up yest. The core of the squad dont like being second, but they dont absolutely hate it. That attitude must change and hopefully Clement is the man for the job

Simplify things, footballers often respond best to simple instructions and clearly defined roles. We’ve seen it go the other way, Phillips at Man City just can’t take onboard the instructions and various demands Pep has, Lundstram struggled under our Gerrard-led tactics in his early days here.

I don't think the bombastic figures that Martyn references exist in modern football anymore. Name a captain at the top level that is a character or in that mould!? Even within British football. I can't think of many, if any in fact. Even looking across the city, I don't see that steely big figurehead type captain in there squad. At most clubs the captain is a figure that has either been at the club the longest or who is respected by his team mates or the coaching staff. Fan sentiment rarely figures in the equation anymore. The culture has shifted. I think that's part of the problem we have has a support. We're clinging to an outdated notion of what the armband means. That's not me excusing the poor leadership we've seen in recent years, but I do think it's become very difficult to judge who is and isn't a leader in the increasingly insular world of modern football. For the sake of argument, you could say Tav as an individual player has delivered often enough in the big moments to be considered a leader, but our support simply don't seem to agree with that argument or at the very least are split. Partially due to the results delivered via team effort. I think even if Clement brings in 2 or 3 players to try and shake things up in that aspect of the club, those players would be viewed in suspicion, in part because we cant afford the finished article anymore and due to the parochial nature of Scottish football. He could bring in three players he knows from Belgium or France and they could end up being disasters. It's an interesting, albeit daunting predicament he needs to navigate with very little wiggle room. Gio wasn't afforded leaders and ran with the previous managers iteration of a leadership group, Beale kept the same core of guys he had from his past tenure here. I guess time will tell if the fans get on board with the change Clement tries to implement. One thing he has on his side is the appetite for that change is there, I don't think there's many going to bat for the leaders in that dressing room anymore.

Speaking as a serving firefighter, a bin fire is incredibly easy to put out 🤷🏻‍♂️🚒

Great listen as always. I definitely think a pod on the role of a captain would be a hot topic.

A great Forum episode as always. Thanks Martyn plus Ally & Adam. Kind of a Tactics Talk spin off, eh? Managerial Musings!

Question for Adam - do you think you would think more of the likes of McGregor, Davis and Arfield's contribution over the last 5 years if they had been adequately replaced since 55? I think all 3 were kept on a season too soon (I wouldn't have renewed any of their contracts after the Scottish Cup win, and this isn't hindsight talking), a 4 year spell for all of them where they win a title, a Scottish Cup and play a part in reaching a European final is a pretty good run given the bin fire they walked into in 2018/19. This probably rings true for the likes of Tav and Goldson as well.
