34 years ago, as the 1980s drew to a close, Maurice Johnston scored a goal that was felt across Glasgow and beyond, as Rangers and Celtic went on to have very different experiences of the 1990s. The turning point has long been thought to have been this moment. But was it and do they exist as often as we think? The Guardian's Rob Smyth joins Martyn to discuss the concept and ponder some examples in their own club's respective histories.

What a day that was, Saturday 4th November 1989,I joined the Navy on Monday 6th. I honestly think that he was the single most important signing we ever made.

thought Rob would've touched on the dinner Alex Ferguson and Howard Wilkinson had where Wilkinson went to it with asking Fergie about signing Dennis Irwin to be quickly told " no f*ckin chance " Fergie then asked about Cantona to which Wilkinson painted the picture of a trouble maker and the deal was done 24/48 hours later ....... great pod

Great series, great episode, great subject, great discussion and a great guest in Rob. Thanks Martyn. I reckon turning points are significantly psychological, as you guys said. Also these are more likely and have more examples at the wrong end of a league, avoiding or succumbing to relegation. Just far too many examples to examine! At the top end most of the examples cited are successful clubs in a strong position re-affirming their power and position. I'd suggest that turning point is felt more and is psychologically damaging for the challenger ie turning back as its been shown the objective is unachievable, just a bit too far out of reach. Anyway! Great to hear your views on the subject lads, really enjoyed that pod.
