With truly awful timing, Adam and Ally are back with the first Tactics Talk of the Philippe Clement era to take a look at the #10 conundrum currently facing the manager.

The boys chat through what we think the manager wants from that role and who is best suited to play there, before going on to discuss the pros and cons of playing players outside of their preferred or most suitable positions.

I hate to say this but we've become the Borussia Dortmund of Scotland. We will run close to the league some seasons, win the odd title, get some cups, do decent in Europe and I'm pissedAF about it. Beale has taken us backwards to a squad similar to Gerrard's first season. They're choking to put pressure or Rogers and we are facilitating keeping Rogers in a job by constantly failing to take the mental jump required to win big games. I'm dreading December 30th right now. The thought of Lammers, Barasic, etc playing is scaryAF.

There's been a few players for Rangers in the past who should've been backed over how they were managed by the manager, honestly, Cantwell just isn't one of them in this situation. He just isn't the player worth driving a wedge between manager and fans over.

Greg

The Dortmund comparison is bullshit. The situations are completely different.

If he plays Sima on right and Mattondo on left, to play Cantwell in the 10, then you'd be complaining at playing "our main threat" out of position and relying on someone who isn't fit on the other side. If he plays Macasuland and he's anonymous then he's blamed for throwing a young boy into such a big game. There is no perfect option when you've a crap squad! Everyone an expert in hindsight...

Cantwell Lawrence hagi and Lowry all can’t play the same position? At least one will be let go you’d think

I enjoy the analysis from Adam and Ally always very well put together and presented and this isn’t necessarily aimed at you, as I’m included in this comment, but the bi-polar reactions from our support is holding us back, we’re either scintillating or regressing and with that we hold back the building of ‘a story’, as the manager likes to call it. 3 poor performances from 9, (with prauge away being par, as it’s a difficult place to go for any side at our level). Criticism of Thursday is due without a doubt, but I still think we are trending upwards and have shown that.

Gary Shaw

Get Lowry back from Hearts …ability wise he’s better than any of the “num 10s” we have…

Even the dogs of the podders get triggered by the mere mention of the name 'Lammers' 🙉 BTW on Thursday when he was subbed, the kit guy threw a jacket over to Lammers to put on... And he missed it, I kid you not. 🙈

I don’t think Cantwell has the talent or the right attitude to be the guy to build a team around. I detest petulant players and it’s as marvel he hasn’t been sent off before now as his discipline is poor. Personally I would sit him on the sidelines for a few games and let him have a think about what’s needed to play in a team. For me the issue is the form has dropped off a cliff from Sima and Danilo and they had been dynamic and deadly up front we are back to misfiring. The shake and chance creation is about the same place we just aren’t taking them now. We are far too quick to label guys who have a few good games as world beaters and those who have a few poor games as gash. The strikers just aren’t guys who have ever scored a lot, I remember me and others saying that in summer and being shushed by those who claimed that in Scotland these guys would go from 6 a season to 16 as it was a scoosh. Clement needs players as he is currently making a jigsaw out of a lot of mismatched pieces. Great pod but not sure this goes deeper than we have a lot of jaded players and a lot of new players who might or might not be good fits. You can talk tactics, set ups, selections etc but a lot of our flaws are just basics of football that guys can’t do, pass to a man, play a ball in front of a player, tackle without fouling etc

Sorry but asking a player to play a role for the team whether it’s not his best role or change his play isn’t a big thing and if Cantwell has an issue with then he can go. Rangers are bigger than him and he can be a bigger fish at a smaller club where that attitude will be tolerated. You just need to look at Grealish under Pep. He’s adjusted his game to suit the team rather than him and I could list more who are at a higher level than us and TC who are doing what he’s being asked and can do it without drama or ego.

I don't think Lammers' selection is anything more complicated than the fact that he's been the only player consistently available over the last 10 games. Lawrence was injured when Clement took over and Cantwell's cameo against Hibs in his first game was the first time the latter had played in 2 months. Cantwell can also fill in wide right, which has been useful given Scott Wright's injury after the semi final against Hearts. Now that McCausland has proven he's worthy of game time and Lawrence is back fit, Lammers has had his role reduced - he's only started 1 of the last 4 games.

I don't even think the performance against Aberdeen was particularly poor. It wasn't scintillating by any stretch, but it was more than good enough to win the game. The first bump in the road and our fanbase reacts hysterically.

The main problem with Lammers is that he's a centre forward who has rebranded himself into an attacking midfielder. His first and only impactful season came in 18/19 scoring 19 in 35 games as centre forward. A major knee injury the following season has left him a shadow of the player that he potentially could've been and has seen him moved back one into a 10 and after his big move to Italy (signed off the back of that one good season) has seen him struggle and bounce from club to club the last 3 seasons. When he signed, his former coach in Holland stated that he is a centre forward who can play deeper if required, I took that as a 2nd striker and not a 10. I would be very interested in hearing the vision sold to him by Beale. A baffling signing by an absolute fraud that will cost the club a considerable sum.
