We're nearly there! Martyn is joined again by Stuart and Ross to look at the ten goals that just missed out on the top ten of all time. Split equally between Old Firm games and Europe, there are six power drives, four in the box, two iconic celebrations and a big fall for one of the top three in 2018.

9 incredible and unforgettable memories in there, plus the goal that would have been number 1 if Frankfurt couldn't take penalties. A couple I had expected to be in the top 10, although once I listen to the final show I bet it will be hard to find any that shouldn't be in there. Interesting comment about how few goals there are from the Advocaat era. An example has to be the Rod Wallace cup final winner v Celtic. Only goal to win a treble against them. Strange an occasion like that is relegated below other "important occasions" that do feature in the list.

Great show lads, not sure I could have found any words to describe the number eleven goal, even listening was painful. On the other hand, even after all that has transpired, the Novo penalty deserves its place, due to the reaction I had to it at the time. I had never expected to see us in another European final, and the roar I let out was almost Neanderthal, no reason no words just pure guttural emotion.

Steve Clark

I agree with the guys about the aribo goal.i haven’t seen it since he scored it.i can’t watch it

Kenneth Brownlee

Did you do a YouTube show to accompany these?

Callum Dinnen

That Cup final in general is weirdly under-appreciated. Maybe because it comes a matter of weeks after the 3-0 win to win the league.

Callum Dinnen

My favourite thing about Ally's goal is the way that a man who at this point must have had 350 goals for us doesn't know how to celebrate it. The way the entire stand goes up adds a extra something as well.

Callum Dinnen

Would Konterman's goal be as iconic if Barry or de Boer had scored it?

Callum Dinnen

I had Aribo's goal in Seville as my number 1. As heartbreaking as that night was, it had to be up there because it's the one (and likely only) time I'll ever see Rangers score in a European final.

Callum Dinnen

The Rod Wallace goal I think has fallen victim to our consistency in Europe since Gerrard arrived. We've had some exceptional results and goals in the 5 years since you last did this, and I think what was once thought to be exceptional now no longer is. edit: unless one of these goals is still to come, I think the same is also true of Alfie's goals against Porto and Feyenoord in 19/20. Had this poll been 2 or 3 years ago, I wonder where those strikes would have ranked.

David_Davy_Dave

That goal absolutely sums up the Advocaat era… we went out and it counts for nothing. Underachieving in the CL was one thing but not taking advantage and having a proper run in the UEFA cup was a real miss. The Parma and Feynoord teams who put us out two of those runs won the thing

Cheers Martyn,….number 11 just brought my PTSD back 😭

IAN OGILVY

Can anyone help with the title music that starts and finishes the show. Shazam fails!! 🇬🇧

Gregg

I asked wee nacho about the penalty in Florence at a speakers night - contrary to opinion he was fucking shitting himself 😂😂

Angus Mackay

Thanks guys, a great listen. Despite the denouement , that season will always be one of my favourites. The emotion and the wonder of it come flooding back whenever I hear the commentary. It was a magnificent dream.

The Novo penalty is probably the most iconic goal in our lifetimes. The commentary on English ITV can be recited almost word for word by every Rangers fan I know. The fact it was Walter, we were skint, unfancied and had to be backs against the wall in every single game. We’ve now reached 2 European finals in my lifetime (and been a bawhair away from another in 92/93), so I imagine I’ll see another yet. But in 2008, none of us believed it would ever happen. Losing the final in Manchester never hurt as much as Seville, because getting there was the achievement. Seville was different, we all believed/expected we’d see off the likes of Red Star, Braga etc. That night in Florence won’t be topped as a moment in time, where you can recall where you were.

Leslie Hibbert

I could've died happy if we won in Seville. Will never get over it, and yeah, all the synchronicities and "written in the stars" stuff, it's a pain that will only go if we do lift it.

Declan Cairns

Obviously I voted for aribo’s goal. If we win it’s perhaps the greatest of all time and Gio is probably still in a job cause we’d all still be lording it over absolutely everyone. I have seen some shite following rangers. I’ve not been lauded with success. This is the best feeling and rush I have felt in life ever and the idea that football, one goal, 13 minutes can do that. I think that’s special

A nice bit of synergy here, the 4-2 win over that lot involving the Mendes goal was in 2008. I watched it in the George Hotel in Inverarie as the original Connect Festival was taking place that weekend. Second to last on that night were Sigur Ros who had just exploded with their song Hoppippola having been used in Planet Earth. I actually didn't quite see the goal, but heard the commentary as there was a big crowd huddled under a gazibo outside and I hadn't got there early enough. Asked the chap next to me, who could see, if it was a good goal. His reply: 'peach' and a nod. Quite.

Andy Barnett

Agreed. That was the first time since Tam Forsyths wonder-strike that we won the Scottish cup final against the other lot. 26 years!!

Andrew Meldrum

A lot of my top twenty here, including a couple from the ten. Interesting though. I started with about 25, so then started cutting - no player could get more than one goal, no game could have more than one goal... So Hateley's v Leeds was cut in favour of Aberdeen. My Tav pick was the opener v Leipzig, Lundstram I went for the Dortmund goal. Looks like I was in the minority - Tavs v Leipzig seems to have not made the 50, Lundstram's v Leipzig was always going in the top 10 and Hateley's v Aberdeen was in the 30's!

Gary Brown

Thanks guys. Great pod. Happy memories, even #11. The eventual outcome wasn't good but the goal and what it meant, potentially, is a truly awesome moment.

Greig Crawford

1 of my favourites of all time the "Bertie yarder"

Lewis Wardrope

Now going into Christmas depressed, thinking about what might have been in Seville 🙃

Douglas Innes

Yes I took 4 photos of Dortmund scoreboard people are mentioning Betis etc greatest Euro away win can't see much fans who were in both agreeing with that ....... I actually bet on a 2-0 Gers in Dortmund

Callum Dinnen

The Mendes goal will still be up there the next time you do this show, because it's the iconic goal from THE statement win at Parkhead in the 21st century. Same reason Ehiogu's goal will have such resonance; it was the case for me (and probably quite a few others who were too young to experience away wins at Celtic as a matchgoer) that the Ehiogu game was the first time I'd seen us win at Parkhead.
