And here it is, Merry Christmas and the countdown of the greatest Rangers goals of all time comes to its conclusion. David and the Rangers author Alistair Aird join Martyn to run down the top ten. There's two apiece for Super Ally and Davie Cooper but how many new ones made the pinnacle and has Gazza been knocked off the top spot?

Have a wonderful Christmas and thank you for all of the support in 2023.

Merry Xmas H&H ….Kemar Roofe’s goal in Belgium is the greatest goal that’s ever been scored and it’s not even close. 😂

Gregg

Well deserved - Gascoigne was a football genius and it’s only looking back you realise how fortunate you were to watch him.

Alan Gebbie

I’m 49 and Roofe”s goal is the greatest ever Rangers goal - maybe even the greatest goal scored by a Scottish team.

Calum Robertson

David, agree 100% with everything you said about the Lundstram goal if I could live any time of my Rangers life again it would be those 30 minutes or so after the goal. The greatest atmosphere at a match I’ve ever been to and I hope we are all at the game when it gets surpassed

james foster

Was there any changes to the top 10?

james foster

I think Kamaras goal is one of the greatest goals in the clubs history in terms of quality and occasion, but overshadowed but Lundstrams being the winner despite being a pretty crap goal in comparison

Calum Robertson

Kamara’s goal was by far the better goal that day but the placing of Lundstram’s goal on this list was everything it meant at the time and the few weeks afterwards

Niall MacKay

I'm not having Lovenkrands header above Laudrups. There isn't a metric it wins on except it was a better day out. Laudrups clinches one of the best achievements in our history, Lovenkrands is more a massive get it up you. I think we are better than that.

Russ

I agree with the comments above tbf, as a fan the best goal in terms of quality I've seen from a Ranger is Roofe's v Liege. Beats 3 men and does the keeper from his own half in a swamp. If somehow that was a clincher in a UEL semi away in Belgium then there's no fucking chance it's not top spot.

Russ

Whilst we're on the topic, the best goal I've seen on a technical level is Luis Suarez v Newcastle when he controls a long ball off his shoulder, holds off the defender and rounds the keeper in 2 touches. Probably the most underrated goal in prem history I think.

David Herd

Thoroughly enjoyed that, and the whole series. Totally agree about the atmosphere in the Leipzig game, the best of the best in my 55 years attending the stadium. I change my mind every 10 minutes on the best goal though!

Heart and Hand

It’s a personal thing, there’s no right or wrong. Whichever goals mean more to an individual is entirely down to them. I don’t think there’s any moral aspect to it so judging anyone on it seems extreme to me.

Gregg

Kamaras was a goal so beautiful I instantly burst into tears when it hit the net 😂😂

Andy Barnett

I agree Brucie. If Messi, Ibra, Neymar, Kane, KDB etc had scored it, it would be getting played over and over and be talked about as the GOAT.

greg sutherland

I have no idea if its just me, but Jock Brown clearly is about to say "it's Hateley" at the nine in a row goal at Tannadice and checks himself as he can't believe it's Laudrup. I missed this game as it was the day before my final honours degree exam, alas I can't regret it too much as I did all right at Uni

Niall MacKay

I wasn't meaning to sound aggressive, sorry. Was just my opinion! I was at the Lovenkrands game and it was one of the best I've ever attended. I just think as greatest goals go, those two side by side in that order seems a bit odd. It's a vote from the Patrons so it isn't wrong! Thinking about it a little further, I guess it would for part of my answer to the question 'what makes a great goal?'.

Alan Colligan

Don't apologise pal, it's your opinion. I agree with you, when I heard it was at #10 I felt like an old man for the first time

John McMillan

Tremendous series Martyn. Such a pleasure to relive these memories. I disagree on the Thern V Wilkins goal though. Both beauties for sure, but Thern gets to wait for the ball to come to him and had a wee bit more time. Wilkins runs onto it and smashes it on the volley, pure artistry for me that one 💙. Cracking show, thanks for pulling together.

Recency bias is a thing, definitely. Imagine being there at the Bayern semi in 72 for example. Would that compare with Lundstram? It must have! Also does it help if you’re there? Does that add? So many things. I still think the H&H family picked the right no 1 but it’s my era so I would 😀

Niall MacKay

The goals were only four years apart, which is interesting as it does feel like they belong to two separate eras. Do this again in fifteen years and Lewis McLeod's overhead kick against Ayr might creep in.

Douglas Innes

Great series and great memories , roll on 2028

Craig Watson

Has there been a YouTube link created for these current goals?

Martyn Ramsay

The great Stephen Millar did one for the last vote and I’m sure he could be tempted to do similar for this year.

Porky

Great series, envoked so many memories, is the full list available anywhere to read? Be interested to see how many of the games i attended.

Gordon McCool

So glad I’ve waited until after Christmas to listen to this or the number 11 goal would have ruined it. So painful even to listen to the commentary never mind watching it. 😭😭

Gary Brown

Thanks for this wonderful series Martyn and another fantastic episode ably assisted by David & Alistair, thanks lads. Great goals, great memories.

Ritchie Lamond

100% it does. I’m in Australia so wasn’t at the game and as much as that goal meant when it went in for me, I know it meant far more to everyone who was there and experienced it for what it was. For me on that night it’s the Kamara goal that I always think of - it’s a better goal technically and then there’s the emotional resonance of the celebration and it coming from a guy who had his own travails in that same tournament the year before is just poetic… but anyway I get why Lundstrum’s is there but it doesn’t hit the same way for me because I didn’t live that moment in Ibrox the same way as most of you did.

Ritchie Lamond

Did anyone else suddenly feel ancient and do some instant mental maths when Alistair said it’d been over a quarter of a century since Ally last played for us?!! How the fuck did that happen?!!

Angus Mackay

A wonderful listen guys, thanks for doing it. I know that I’m in the minority with this, but I would trade a few league titles for that Euro run every time. It wasn’t just what we did, it was the way that we did it. I was hundreds of miles away when I watched, and the room instantly gets dusty as soon as the coms for that game cones on. Utterly magical, the peak of what football is about. Also, an underrated aspect of the Roofe goal is the underlying consternation in Rob Maclean sounding like he’s had an accident in primary school class.

Callum Dinnen

I wonder, even for the 90s, how much TV plays a difference between Gascoigne's goal against Aberdeen in 1996 and Laudrup's at Tannadice in 1997. Gascoigne scored at home in front of more of us, and it was also live on STV for those watching at home. The game against Dundee Utd wasn't on TV and the goal therefore doesn't have the immediate emotional impact other than on those lucky few thousand who'd travelled to Dundee.
