Celtic 2-1 Rangers Postmatch Reaction 30 Dec 2023

Lack of quality and baffling refereeing costs Rangers at Parkhead.

Comments

Angus Mackay

Very good assessment overall, Davie. I thought Cantwell lacked courage in both directions snd Sima looks gassed at the moment. Dessers ain’t good enough. Refereeing, again was scandalous, but that’s just something we have to overcome until we can get the rot in the league. They are going backwards without question, and I think they’ll now have to back Brenda. Given his record in the market, that should work well for us longer term if we can look after our own business better.

John Smith

Than god we’ve got a transfer window on the horizon

Brian trump

Goldson can’t defend at any decent level. Tav couldn’t find a Rangers player all day but as long as his stats are good scoring wise

Craig Ferguson

I think this is the least disappointed I’ve felt after an old firm defeat in a long time. That game could of went either way the biggest thing for me is we showed no fear going to Parkhead especially after the shit bag show at our own ground.

Rona Bluebell

Nothing to add other than I’ve taken to my bed with a bar of toblerone for comfort, and I don’t even like it as a chocolate. Desperate times. Roll on transfer window and 2024 😢

stephen

I'm still struggling to comprehend the fact that we need to rebuild the rebuild. That's actually quite depressing. I'm away to watch the 9inarow box set to cheer myself up.

Kenneth Mackay

The question everyone should be asking endlessly: if offside was the reason not to give the penalty, why was it a goal kick, not a free kick for an offisde? Is it perhaps because if they'd gone and checked if Sima was actually offside the second or two before the still Sky Sports trotted out (ie when the ball was played) they'd have found he was on?

CRAIG CASSELLS

David, ex referee and Celtic fan Steve Conroy has said VAR would NOT (should NOT) have checked for offside at our penalty claim as "there was no direct consequence ie a goal". Therefore safe to assume something smells fish. The clearest of handballs is overlooked by Collum. Rangers have to demand answers, demand the audio. (@GetInvolvedRef) posted at 3:18 pm on Sat, Dec 30, 2023: Steve Conroy said: “Offside is irrelevant. VAR can only check for an offside if there is a consequence -ie a goal. There wasn’t. “The telling situation is that the game was restarted with a goal kick – not an indirect free kick. Hopefully you’re pushing the club to push for the audio David which might clear up ‘one’ incident.

James Anderson

As a club we really need to condemn these issues. We had...Walsh as ref We had Clancy as 4th We had Collum on VAR None of which, at best, have shown to be not good in our games. We are shown a suspicious picture evidence 35 minutes after the event. We need to call this out, once again dubious refereeing and VAR decision during an old firm match have impacted the result We need to be able to investigate the var sound recording to understand what was said during that decision.

George Higgins

Cannot argue with a single thing you’ve said David.

Scott King

Never ideal to lose but we can be effectively 2 points behind heading into 2nd half of the season, we’d have taken that a few weeks ago ago, we need an out and out striker, no debate Get that and we can win this league, if we don’t get one forget it

Graham Jones

My concern is just how much we have to work with int he transfer window. It might help if we can shift players on, but that isn’t a given. We should’ve taken something from the game, but then again we’ve been limping towards the winter break for weeks now. It’s frankly a miracle how we’ve won our Europa League group, won the league cup and clawed our way back into a title race. The board have to find what the manager needs, because he’s earned that from them. We need a positive response and result against Killie now, and we’ll see where we are when they return after the break. Hopefully it will be with some added quality. There was no anger after the game today just disappointment we didn’t come away with something. Lundstrum needs help in midfield, because he can’t do everything himself, but it depends on what is possible in January. It’s likely to be loans more than signings, which isn;t ideal but is the norm for January. I’m not going to pile on Dessers because he’s actually been decent for a few weeks. It wasn’t his day today, and I’ve seen much better players struggle in these fixtures. Let’s face it, Kris Boyd was awful in them. This game is now history, and it’s about what we do from now on because we’re in a good position, so long as we win our games we have in hand. The only thing that concerns me is the squad being stretched too far, because Europe could become a distraction and we have to make sure we prioritise the league.

CRAIG CASSELLS

My apologises for the above post which is complete crap. Looking online at IFAB VAR rules it is clear that offside IS looked at for all penalty calls so even a (ex) ref like Steve Conroy can f*ck up.

Gary Shaw

The bottle thing is a hard one to put your finger on because when you go into these games and continuously over hit / under hit passes, make wrong decisions and do things you just don’t do in a run of the mill game then there is definitely a physiological barrier there….it can’t just keep happening and be just bad luck…..

Gary Shaw

Once the penalty is awarded then it would have been gave offside but the fact that Collum didn’t give the pen and the ref indicates a goal kick and not an offside then it starts to smell fishy coz it’s as blatant a handball as you’ll see….at the end of the day we wouldn’t have got the pen in the final outcome.

Craig Ferguson

No quality in the final 3rd yes I agree but we are still night and day from September but for grit and determination a yes from me. Not every player played well but they all tried there heart out.

Mr J K Murray

recall Morelos attaining to a hole in his upper thigh via a boot but the stud making the visual violent mark, it did not weep blood much, but again there was not even a booking by the referee, even Tom of rtv said it was irrational on our own ground, he has a vast experience,no doubt these issues did waer him down, shown with his behaving some what irrational towards him ending his tenancy' on our land on a free, did we start this phenomena, not trying to explicate a historical bad fouls narrative, i say we adapted through this fouling narrative in our history, hic, sips water, takes fresh linen hankie & coughs into it, bugs at this time of year, hic, yis, could let all this go & say what goes around comes around, but we have a new experienced manager explicating this, for lack of discriptibe language, attempted murder by all who had to view it via televsion, not to go into the socialpolitico' narrative of slipping sliding scottish goverment & others, who are allowing this flying of followers of foreign flags in the only sports ground in the uk,hence foreign people & using another peoples anthem to visually show this, without anyone even showing a cough about it, but actually revelling in this bitter narrative. Scroll back to 2012 about the failed coup de tête [headbutt] to where we are now, today was criminal but feel this situation is coming to an end, but who else would put up with it. Do we go into the break without challenging these people today , hic,

George Cook

However, former top class referee Steve Conroy pointed out VAR can't get involved in an offside situation when checking for a penalty. He told sportslens: “Rangers have been robbed of the chance of levelling the game with a penalty kick. It was a clear penalty. Offside is irrelevant. VAR can only check for an offside if there is a consequence -ie a goal. There wasn’t. Willie Collum is there to check whether there was a hand ball or not. The telling situation is that the game was restarted with a goal kick – not an indirect free kick, which would have been the case if the offside was awarded.”

Craig Woods

Not listened yet, still out in pub, but ive a major sense of pride regardless of anything else. We wouldve been flatened under gio or beale. Come at me dafties.

The Gallant Pioneer

Mesers is our worst signing since Davy Urquhart 😡!!!!!

Gary Shaw

I’ve never been one for refs cheating but I do think human nature dictates their decision making and I include that when they come to Ibrox incidentally but when you see what Sterling got booked for and then what McGregor,Bernardo and frog eyes got away with then it infuriates you.

Maca82

Getting to the stage I am losing interest in our club. Last three old firms dodgy decisions bailing out that mob and what do we get? Boyd and the odd mealy mouth statement via a Matt Lindsey et al. Clement like Beale, Gio, Gerrard etc needs a set of balls off the park to support him instead we have statement writers! Everyone and their dog knew where the last few weeks were going and here we are. Just fire an Esoanyol badge over the main stand if we don’t have the fight! There’s a reason McGregor, Brown et al have zero and i mean zero European pedigree vs domestic domaine and yes it’s the lack of assistance from the middle.

Brian Cairney

Don’t care what anyone says, we were cheated out that!

Gary Shaw

Yeah but wait to we play Dumbarton in a few weeks,Davie and Cantwell starts with the no look passes

Craig

Dessers just needs to go, he looked more like a defender protecting the ball as it approached his keeper than a striker in a 1 on 1 situation!

Gary Brown

Thanks for that David. Balanced and reflective especially given the circumstances. Have another look at Dessers 1-on-1, he's getting pulled off the ball. He's waiting (sadly too long) for the GK to show (like in Betis) and also caught in 2 minds to pass to Cantwell. This 'officiating' has a MASSIVE part to play in our players mentality AND their lot's too. Everyone knows what's going on. The bias means their lot can foul at will with practically no punishment and our guys are holding back on making legit challenges worried about getting booked for nothing. InTIMidation has worked, does work and will continue to work. Gollum! That pen / lines later shit show today should be reported to UEFA. Game changed by a game changer! (Despite being one of the most despicable cheats I've ever seen as his dark side!). We don't have a game changer in the squad, yet. Give the manager time to get one. Home. No away fans. Goal up. Ref & VAR on side, foul at will with no cards, injury strapped opponent with patched up players and others out of position! And that lot - fans AND players were absolutely fkin bricking it. We're coming! And they know it. That was more relief at the end than joy! Reminds me of Gerrard's first OF, away, maybe gave the fixture and them a wee bit too much respect in the first half. Got into them in the 2nd half. Just not enough but lessons were learned. We all know what happened with SG's second, and subsequent, OF games - we never lacked belief or desire again. Keep Believing!

Andy Fullen

We are right in this and they know that. Huge opportunity over the first 2 games v them to put pressure on their awful defence but due to our equally awful recruitment this evens that out. Beat killie on Tuesday then reassess and recruit (buy Shankland). This season is still in our hands.

Gary Shaw

Even with everyone fit I would still be starting Sterling in midfield….covers the ground better than any of our midfielders and doesn’t look fazed one bit….i even think we’ll start to see him pop up with goals….id like a fit Lundstram in there with him and a cracking number 10 who doesn’t dance on TikTok and flick his hair.

Al H

Officials poor throughout. Johnston , Bernado and McGregor seemed to have a free pass for anything. However, lack of quality upfront killed us today. Transfer window critical to build on Clement's good work.

G Calder

Previous defeats from Celtc would make Rangers players & manager have no self belief - but i get the feeling Phil will use this defeat to inspire our players . He will drill it into them we need big wins as officials in the big games wont give us a thing . We need a solid win against Killie - losing today was just 3 points - not a psychological defeat . That game today didn’t win or lose the league . Phil will be prepared for that result - it could just make us stronger . We are well in this race

Graeme Robb

I just have this horrible feeling like we’re being sat on by a bully. They control what fans get into the match, they intimidate the officials and they set the narrative. It keeps their champions league money coming in, even tho their football is not great. Very frustrating.

CJT

8 points behind with 2 in hand isn’t bad. Do I trust the guys who played today to make it 2 points with the same number of games. Not sure. Do I trust a full fit squad to do it, maybe. IMO the whole thing now depends on the Jan window and unfortunately not just ours. Brenda must know his side are pish. Back Clement and we win this, don’t and despite what you said David, OF games will decide it and they’re already 6 points from 6 on that front. Anyway still in it despite Beale’s extraordinary impact so better placed than we have been in many of the recent seasons. Onwards and upwards.

G Calder

Im not convinced its cheating through bias ( except Clancy - hes just bias) Its pressure from Celtc thats working - thats why we need to challenge it .

Robert White

Cold light of day,.we were robbed of a penalty at half time. They should have had a red before us. Simple facts that lead to a different result. Just as in the first game. We should be well winning this league already. Scandalous.

Granters

The board need to find funds to make a meaningful improvement to the starting 11 in this coming window. They will argue they’ve spent big backing the last 2 managers but that’s not our fault. Both appointments were on them. They need to find the funds.

Rona Bluebell

Just watched again. You’re so calm and reasonable after OF games, David. A credit to our fan base and it hugely helps when the pain hits. We have big Phil and he will take us to new places. WATP

Peter Hosie

In one minute they can’t be agreeing to mic up the hibs manager (wrongly) for a full game with sky then not agree to release 90 seconds of audio from another professional.
