As agreed last week, Hoggy is back and this time welcomes (as a last minute change) listener Graham Telfer to the show.

Graham's father-in-law was a top flight official and the boys try to talk about VAR, officials and the laws of the game in a reasoned manner - to decipher is VAR worth it and what are the real things that have to be improved (not just VAR!).

What do you think?

The game has progressed to be a 24/7 phenomenon that exists way outside the 90 minutes. VAR adds to that experience now. Contributes massively to post game kvetvhing

I would like to see the roles of VAR and on field referees split. Whilst similar in a way the two roles are completely different. One focuses on being a presence on the pitch, watching the game with your eyes and reacting. The other focuses on studying footage and looking for things that are missed when carrying out on field refereeing. The similarity is the rules being applied, but it’s two different views and jobs. Why are we training incompetent people on two different jobs. Focus each on being the best at each role rather than being poor at both.

Great listen as always. Excellent debut Graham. Found myself agreeing with a lot of your well-considered opinions on referees and VAR. Hope to hear more from you on the network.

Maybe a bit Orwellian, but , is VAR just the start? In twenty years time, will games be referreed by video operators giving all decisions?

Great pod. Does VAR work? yes. We see that when we play in Europe. The difference, refs are professional, they apply the rules and don’t give a shit about the optics of giving a “favourable” even if correct decisions for Rangers. Why does VAR have problems in Scotland? 1) Everyone not associated with Rangers assumed VAR would mean Rangers would never get a penalty or decision again and it would stop us “cheating” (2) the referees don’t apply the laws of the game on the pitch (recent games against Celtic and motherwell show that) so they don’t apply the laws of the game when on VAR duty, why (3) I don’t think refs are corrupt but the second guess themselves in our games because they worry about the optics. Good point made about you never hear anyone saying “VAR did a great job there” in Scotland the bitterness runs so deep even when correct decisions are made that happen to benefit Rangers you have numbskulls like Barry Robson inferring VAR is ruining the game. The problem isn’t VAR the problem is the parochial nature of the game in Scotland

I think VAR is a good thing but generally the rules are poor and refs standards haven’t kept up with the players in the past 10 years
