PSG's fresh flair and flamboyance came to an end when they met the grizzled veterans of Milan in the semi final. There would be more youthful energy for them to deal with in the Final, however. Adam takes to the stage to explain to Martyn, David and Rob how Louis van Gaal's young Ajax side became champions of Europe.

Ronald De Boer wasn't 38 when he signed for Rangers Adam! He had just turned 30 and was still near his peak.

Sounded like 38 at 17.55. Regardless, he wasn't 'over the hill'. If anything, he was a late developer, having left Ajax as a young man to spend a couple of years at Twente before returning. We saw him near his best.

I didn’t say that either 😅 I said maybe some people might think that a 30 year old coming to Rangers may be over the hill but that’s a disservice to how good he was.

Adam Thornton

PS just for reference, I don’t think that 41 year old Ronald De Boer somehow managed to score 20 goals in the 2003 treble season 😅

My cousin was on a work placement in Amsterdam and brought me home that Ajax kit they wore in the final.

I did a double take thinking it sounded like 38 too. Literally rewound & replayed. Sounded like, wasn't! RdB the 'best' player to have ever worn a Rangers shirt. World Class! Yes there have been others, a couple. But for longevity of that level at the highest level, success, standing in the world game and lasting legacy no one matches him.

Enjoyed this episode. Thanks guys. These deep dives into the Champions League are very interesting to look back on. Got to admit this season was probably the last I avidly watched every match possible so I'm looking forward to future episodes to pick up on things I no doubt missed at the time. Keep up the good work guys. Really appreciate just how much time & effort must go into the research, the opinions are always good to consider. It's so interesting to review with retrospect apparently minor things which have since become significant and brought change to the game or alterations to the way it's played.

The point made by Martin on the reality that Ajax would not get an automatic place in the next seasons CL was a big indicator of the new reality and our own place in the future pecking order

Sorry playing catch up. Has part 1 of the 94/95 season been deleted?
